The coronavirus hasn’t stopped the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence from kicking off its annual grants program. Indeed, the difficulties brought by the pandemic heighten the need for the innovations in teaching supported by the program.

So get those applications in. The program is now open.

“We’re open to and excited about seeing new initiatives that respond to these challenging times,” said NR Fund executive director Sabrina Toback. This year is the fourth cycle of awarding grants, which are available to current teachers, parents, students and administrators in the City School District of New Rochelle.

The organization, which partners with the District, helps engage the community to develop, fund and implement high-quality educational and enrichment programming to encourage students to show their true selves and broaden their educational experience.

In addition to more traditional projects, Toback looks forward to seeing creative initiatives for which grants are sought, including those focusing on awareness of current health and safety practices.

Previous NR Fund grants have supported a wide variety of programs across the District, including a chess program, gardening and greenhouse activities, an adult-sized robot and performances of the critically acclaimed off-Broadway show Addy & Uno, a musical that celebrates "the beauty of differences," featuring puppets operated by live actors.

“The most interesting thing about this year is to look for ways to support our academic community by finding opportunities to enhance students’ educations amidst very challenging environments,” Toback said.

The deadline to apply for a grant is Jan. 20, 2021. Grant guidelines and an application can be found here.
