Petco Love and Second Chance Animal Services Aim to Stop the Spread of Deadly Preventable Diseases Through Free Pet Vaccination Event
As Part of Petco Love’s Initiative to Provide One Million Free Pet Vaccines,
Second Chance Will Host Vaccine Event, July 15 in Palmer
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (JULY 1, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services will provide free pet vaccinations for Palmer area pets at an upcoming community pet vaccine clinic. The free vaccines are made possible through Petco Love's new national vaccination initiative, which is providing one million free pet vaccines to existing animal welfare partners, including Second Chance, for family pets in need.
Parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats — the most prevalent deadly diseases affecting pets — are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care. To ensure the health and wellness of our beloved pets and to address this critical need, Second Chance and Petco Love have partnered to make pet vaccines free and accessible.
Through this national effort, Second Chance aims to vaccinate 500 pets. The community vaccine clinic will take place at the Palmer Town Building at 4417 Main Street on July 15, 2022, from 10 am to 1 pm. Advance registration is required by visiting secondchanceanimals.org/palmer. The clinic is open to all and will offer free rabies and/or distemper vaccinations. The distemper vaccines distributed through the Petco Love initiative will be the DAPPv Canine and HCP Feline vaccines.
“Thanks to Petco Love, we can offer these important vaccine events at no cost to pet owners,” said Sheryl Blancato, Second Chance Founder and CEO. “We urge community members to take advantage of this no-cost resource to ensure the health and wellness of our community’s pets.”
“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented. It is further exacerbated when unvaccinated pets come into busy shelter kennels, where these deadly diseases can spread quickly, resulting in multiple deaths, skyrocketing expenses, and hindering saving pet lives,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love President. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these lifesaving vaccines, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.”

125th Anniversary of Joshua Hyde Public Library
Picnic on the Common
Sturbridge, MA— On Thursday, July 22, 1897 the Joshua Hyde Library was dedicated. The building was funded by an 1894 bequest of $20,000 from Sturbridge native George B. Hyde for a library, with the request that it be named to honor his father, Joshua (if room, perhaps add after Joshua, a prosperous local farmer). The money was bequeathed in 1894 and construction started in 1896, for the Library’s dedication in 1897. Fast forward one hundred and twenty-five years and this July we continue to celebrate that dedication. The face of building has changed but one thing remains the same, our continued commitment to serving our great community.
As such, on Saturday, July 23rd between 12-3 pm the Library, the Friends of Joshua Hyde Public Library, and the 125th Anniversary Committee would like to invite you to celebrate our 125th Anniversary with a Picnic on the Common. ALL are invited to attend the celebration & no tickets are required. Come with your blanket and/or chairs with a lunch to enjoy on the grass with live music from Haphazard Jazz. There will also be lawn games, a food & ice cream truck, raffles, button making with the Friends of JHPL, and a kid friendly “Touch a Truck” experience. There will also be time to complete our 125th Scavenger Hunt (beginning on July 8th - to run until the day of the picnic) and pick up a victory souvenir. Ceremonial cake cutting scheduled for 1:30pm with cupcakes to the public.
You won’t want to miss this celebration!
For more information on the Scavenger Hunt & 125th Anniversary Picnic on the Common celebration, please visit our webpage at www.sturbridgelibrary.org, or call us at 508-347-2512. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram @sturbridgelibrary for updates and cancellations.

Hitchcock Academy Offers
Newly Designed Summer Programming for Kids
BRIMFIELD - Hitchcock Academy is pleased to be offering a new weekly summer program, Summer Days at Hitchcock, beginning the week of July 18 and running through August 12.
With age-specific programming for 4 – 7, 8 – 10, and 11 – 13 year olds, Summer Days offers a variety of activities to keep kids engaged and having fun. Morning programs are comprised of a combination of arts and crafts, incorporating basic tools and techniques to get creativity flowing while participants explore a variety of mediums. The morning also includes recreational play to get the kids moving while building basic skills. Afternoon programs are focused on STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math with fun, hands-on projects to encourage curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking.
“We have not offered summer programs here since 2019. Each year families have reached out to us looking for something local, so we are pleased to be able to offer this new program,” says executive director Cindy Skowyra. “We are also all very conscious of the price point and have kept the cost comparatively low starting at just $90 for a full week program. Re-introducing summer programming has been a goal for us, so we are excited to be able to offer these programs with plans to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our community.”
Like all programming at Hitchcock, Summer Days is open to families throughout the area, not just Brimfield residents. Families can sign their child up for morning, afternoon, or both, and can choose anywhere from one to all four weeks. Extended days are also offered. Full details about the program are available at www.hitchcockacademy.org or by calling 413-245-9977.
Hitchcock Academy is a nonprofit community center offering educational, recreational, and cultural programming. It is located at 2 Brookfield Road in Brimfield.

Cooking with Rico - Shrimp Scampi
Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 6:30 PM
Shrimp scampi is a dish so entrenched in the Italian-American vernacular that many of us would believe when traveling throughout Italy, we would find it as a staple on many regional menus.
The fact is scampi are tiny lobster-like crustaceans with pale pink shells (called langoustines). One traditional way of preparing them in Italy was to sauté them with olive oil, garlic, onion, and white wine. Unable to obtain langoustines in their new host country, Italian-American chefs swapped shrimp for scampi, but kept both names. Grilled langoustines were served widely throughout the Mediterranean regions of Italy and were adapted to stateside ingredients sometime in the 1920’s forward.
Chef Rico will also draw on additional dishes from the Mediterranean regions of Italy and without question will have his own recipe for this much loved crustacean creation. This event is $57 per person with wine pairings, or $49 without* Tax and gratuity are not included. Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321.

Sturbridge, MA — In continuation of the many celebrations of the Joshua Hyde Public Library’s 125th Anniversary, a 125th themed Scavenger Hunt is planned. Starting July 8th, you may pick up a copy of the scavenger hunt questions at the library front desk that will lead you on a hunt through time. If you are a history detective or just someone who wants to learn more about our town/library origins, then this exciting scavenger hunt is for YOU. All ages are encouraged to participate, but please note some items on the hunt require crossing main street. As such, we advise all minors to be accompanied by an adult.
The scavenger hunt will conclude on July 23rd between 12-3pm at the 125th Picnic on the Common; a culminating celebration of the Library’s one hundred and twenty-five years of service to our Sturbridge community. You won’t want to miss the celebration, or picking up your Scavenger Hunt victory souvenir. ALL are invited to attend the picnic celebration! No tickets are required. Show up ready to enjoy live music from Haphazard Jazz with your blanket and/or chairs with a lunch to enjoy on the grass. There will be lawn games, a food & ice cream truck, silent auction, button making with the Friends of JHPL, and a kid friendly “Touch a Truck” experience for everyone to partake in the fun.

CHEF RICO’S PATIO DINNER - New England Clambake
Wednesday, July 27, 2022 AT 6PM
The New England Clambake is an outdoor social gathering and a time-honored method of cooking where clams & other lobster (often with potatoes & sweet corn) are baked or steamed traditionally in a pit.
For this Patio Dinner, Chef Rico will show us how to get traditional clambake results at home without setting the yard on fire or going through the pains of heating stones and gathering seaweed like the Wampanoag Indians did.
This special event will be hosted on the beautiful patio at The Barn at Wight Farm. The price is $65 per person. The menu will include: cod cakes, steamed clams, clam & corn chowder, house-made coleslaw, Portuguese potatoes, corn on the cob, 1¼ pound lobster, and strawberry short cake. Seating is limited so call The Barn at 774-241-8450 and make your reservations now!
Event Notes: Beer and wine will be available at an additional cost. Reservations are required. In the event of rain, the dinners will he held indoors at the Barn or Café. Per person price does not include tax or gratuity.
