Summer has sprung! I know we usually say that about spring, but this year spring came and went so quickly that it seems Summer is "springing" out right now!
This month we are pleased to welcome Ms. Nancy Allred as our Interim Master Gardener Coordinator for Anne Arundel County. Nancy recently retired from her former position as Director of the Pascal Senior Center and serves as an active Master Gardener. She is busy learning about the many active MG projects in the county and starting to plan for the fall training course for new MGs. Details are below.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, while we think of the many sacrifices made by our military families through the years. We honor and remember each of you for your dedication and service.

Ask-A-Master Gardener Plant Clinics
The Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners, University of Maryland Extension, will be
conducting plant clinics around the county throughout the summer. Master Gardener volunteers will be available to answer horticultural questions about vegetables, bedding plants, water quality and other topics to teach sound, sustainable practices.
The plant clinics will be held on Saturdays from April 14 to October 13, 2018 at various locations in the county.

Master Gardener Coordinator's Corner
Winter temperatures seemed to last forever this spring, delaying the sowing of some crops. Weeks of cold spring days were interspersed with days of extreme summer-like temperatures. Weeks with minimal rainfall were followed by days with severe storm events and localized heavy rainfall. Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners enthusiastically launched their efforts to support and educate county residents about best practices for the home gardener despite fluky weather conditions. Master Gardeners provide families with hands-on guided vegetable gardening experiences. They go to schools where students learn about conservation landscaping, native plants and pollinators. Plant clinics disseminate information about sustainable horticultural practices, provide resources and help residents with plant, insect and plant disease identification. Master Gardeners tend low maintenance and demonstration gardens as well as 
provide composting demonstrations. They consult with homeowners to focus attention on practices that protect the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. Beekeepers offer demonstrations and talks to schools, garden clubs and other groups. Master Gardener volunteers help residents identify invasive plants and promote native planting to benefit wildlife. They also help Marylanders improve their health and save money by saving seed and growing their own vegetables. The extent of the educational impact in Anne Arundel County is quite impressive.
Recruitment has begun for the 2018 Fall Intern Training. This year the course will be conducted at the Anne Arundel County Extension Office in Gambrills on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00 pm beginning September 11 and ending on November 1. The cost is $275. Pollinators of all types - insects, birds, and bats - are in decline due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and diseases. Insects, including Maryland's 400 species of native bees, provide valuable pollination and are a food source for wildlife. Insect pollination is essential for the production of about one-third of our food crops, and some pollinators, such as butterflies and hummingbirds, are simply a delight to see!

Healthy Eating - Roasted Cauliflower
1 head of cauliflower
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
Salt and pepper
½ cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Remove outer leaves of cauliflower. Cut florets off the stem, wash and drain. Combine oil, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Toss the cauliflower florets in the oil mixture. Spread cauliflower on a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast in the oven at 450 degrees 15-20 minutes until cauliflower starts to soften and begins to brown. Sprinkle with cheese. Continue to roast for 5-10 minutes.
