Dr. Debra Duardo, Superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and Dr. Paul Gothold, Superintendent of the San Diego County Office of Education, have been named winners of this year’s Justus A. Prentice Award presented by the Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA). The award was presented by John Bass, AESA COO, at the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association fall membership meeting in San Francisco, California.

The Justus A. Prentice Award is presented annually in recognition of contributions through executive leadership in the advancement of regional educational service agency programs at the regional, state, and national levels. Gothold and Duardo were selected because of their efforts in creating educational services for migrant children being held in emergency intake centers as immigration levels surged to record numbers.
Legislative Update
This week's Online News shares three articles from AESA's Legislative Team.
Resource:
Learning Recovery & Redesign Guidance

AASA has shared this resource with AESA and our members.

As school districts across the nation are facing an unprecedented challenge in School Year 2021-22: how to effectively and equitably recover from the impacts of COVID-19 while still navigating an ongoing pandemic. At the same time, this moment also presents unprecedented opportunities: how to best use the mandate for change and significant new federal resources to also redesign education systems such that we “succeed in promoting equity and excellence for all learners.”
Five Things ESAs Should Know About Education Finance Equity

This guest article comes from Bellwether Education Partners’ Alex Spurrier, co-author of Splitting the Bill: Understanding Education Finance Equity, a nine-part series that gives advocates a crash course in the fundamentals of education finance in their states and communities.
Update: Build Back Better Act

Last week, House Democrats released a new version of the Build Back Better Act
following weeks of negotiations. The new package totals $1.75 trillion, down from the
original $3.5 trillion proposals.

This new version is expected to get approval from the two key senators who did not support the original price tag: Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. Most notably for ESAs, the bill includes investments in the educator workforce, school nutrition, childcare, and universal pre-K that AESA supports.
