January 28, 2021
Please note that our Return to Learn Plan is an addendum to our Student Handbook.  You are reminded of the following procedures for Quarantine and Student Travel:

Quarantine
IF A HOUSEHOLD MEMBER OF A STUDENT OR SCHOOL EMPLOYEE HAS BEEN TESTED AND IS WAITING FOR RESULTS, THE STUDENT OR SCHOOL EMPLOYEE MUST QUARANTINE AND MAY NOT COME TO SCHOOL UNTIL THE RESULTS ARE KNOWN AND THE SCHOOL NURSE HAS GRANTED PERMISSION TO RETURN.

When informed an immediate household member has been tested, the student or staff who resides in the same home will quarantine until the result of the test is confirmed negative. If the result of the immediate household member's test is positive, the student or staff member who resides in the same home will quarantine for 10 days.

Quick Links

Students or staff who may have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 are required to quarantine for 10 days, even if the student or staff tests negative or feels healthy since symptoms may appear 2 to 10 days after exposure to the virus. Please see the latest criteria from the Centers for Disease Control on "exposure" and "quarantine."

Please be reminded, if a student tests positive for COVID-19, families are obligated to inform the school for the health and safety of the entire school community. This applies even when we are not in person or in session. Please email the school nurse at [email protected].

Student Travel
School staff and school community members will abide by the Diocese of Harrisburg requirement on quarantine for travelers to other states.  Any school staff or students traveling outside of PA are required to quarantine for 10 days. Likewise, any school staff or students entering the US from abroad (international travel) are required to quarantine for 10 days. Since international travel includes a wide range of situations, those affected bring their individual circumstances to the principal who will consult with the Secretary for Education to make a final determination.

This applies to those who have traveled outside of Pennsylvania. It does not apply to household members who did not travel out of state. However, if the individual who is under quarantine develops any signs or symptoms or has a positive test result, their close contacts, including household members, should also quarantine.

Anyone student or staff member who is required to quarantine must notify the following:

Re-enrollment Process
As we transition to planning for 2021-2022, we ask that you please read the following information thoroughly as it contains important information regarding course selection, tuition assistance, and re-enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year, as well as the tentative calendar-at-a-glance.  Links to important documents are included at the end of this letter.

Course Selection - Parent Information
Please take the time to review our course catalog for next school year.  Also, please watch the video presentation pertaining to your student's grade for next year.  The video provides additional information beyond course descriptions, to include very specific requirements and elective options by grade level. These resources will assist as you engage in conversation with your student at home regarding their schedule options for next school year.  Both resources are linked at the end of this letter and are also posted on the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org in the home page Announcements section.  We will continue our partnership with several colleges and elective high school entities, to include Alvernia University for College in the Classroom credit, Dual Enrollment at three local York County colleges for credit, the York County School of Technology flex program for grades 11 & 12, and the Virtual High School for additional elective opportunities not offered at YC.

After reviewing the information this week online, please feel free to contact Mrs. Kathy Hand, Director of Studies, with any further questions you may have.  She can be reached at [email protected] or 717-846-8871 x313.

Course Selection - Student Process
Junior High students brought home a list of courses for the 2021-2022 school year to share with you. As part of the pre-course selection process, please review that list with them, provide the necessary parent signature, and have your student return the course selection form.  Signed Junior High forms are due to homeroom teachers by Friday, February 5. Junior high students will register for courses online during computer class in early February.

Senior High students should be talking with their subject level teachers regarding appropriate course selection and level (1, 2, H, or AP) for 2021-2022. Students currently in grades 9 through 11 will have access to the online course selection portal in VISION beginning February 1. This will remain open until February 19. During this time, students should select their courses, and appropriate levels based on teacher recommendations, for next school year. After completing the process online, students are instructed to print the course selection sheet and review with parents for parent signature.  The final step is for students to have each of their teachers sign the course selection sheet next to the desired course to document their approval.  These signed forms are due to homeroom teachers by Friday, February 26.

Re-enrollment
In an effort to prepare for the budget and enrollment numbers, we have aligned the re-enrollment process with our course selection calendar. Tuition figures for next year will be published in early April after budget approval by the School Board. In order to budget appropriately, we are asking families to re-enroll now.

To do so, we are offering a discounted early re-enrollment fee of $200.00 per student if paid by February 19, 2021. After February 19, 2021, the regular re-enrolment fee of $250.00 will be in place, with an increase to $300.00 after April 9, 2021. $200.00 of the re-enrollment fee will be applied to your child's 2021-2022 required technology and capital improvement fees for 2021-2022 ($100.00 each).

Tuition Assistance
If you plan to apply for tuition assistance for the 2021-2022 school year, please be sure to do so no later than March 1, 2021.  For specific guidelines regarding this process, please see the additional information below titled "Letter regarding the FACTS Tuition Assistance Application & Neumann Scholarship guidelines." If you require assistance in completing this application, you may make an appointment February 3 or 9 with our Business Office Manager, Ms. Heather Dougherty. Please contact her at [email protected] or 717-846-8871 x315.

Again, we thank you for choosing York Catholic and we look forward to a continued partnership with your family next school year.
Refer a Friend
If you know a friend, family member, or anyone looking for a high-quality, Christ-centered education for their children who do not already attend a Catholic school, you could receive a $250 credit toward your child's tuition at York Catholic.

York Catholic's Parent Referral Program is a win-win for everyone involved. Referred students receive an outstanding education from York Catholic, while parents of the referred families get peace of mind knowing their child is gaining so much more than just a top-notch education.  Families who refer someone who registers at York Catholic receive a $250 credit towards their child's tuition.

You, as parents, are our best ambassadors.  In order for the Parent Referral Program to be a success, we need information about individuals who may be interested in joining the York Catholic family. All you need to do is click HERE to fill out the form. If the family you refer attends York Catholic through their first semester, your family's tuition will be credited $250, spread into 4 credits applied to the months of February, March, April, and May.

It really is that simple. So go ahead. Please click on the link above and allow us the opportunity to do what we love -- help to develop, nurture and encourage children so they may grow in faith, mind, and heart. Mail or email the form to us and we will take it from there!

The Parent Referral Program is open to all parents of current York Catholic students. The tuition credit is not available for referring your own children. The $250 credit is only good toward tuition on a student's account; no cash is given, and it is non-transferrable. A referred student applies only to a new student from a non-partner school.

Thank you for all you do for our school!

The homeroom collecting the most box tops will be rewarded!
PSAT 10 for Sophomores
Any interested sophomore is invited and encouraged to take the PSAT 10 this spring at York Catholic.  The PSAT 10 mirrors the PSAT, and offers a tenth grader the opportunity to preview and practice for the actual PSAT without stress over score reporting.  Scores from the PSAT 10 are not reported and do not impact college applications in any way.  Students benefit from the opportunity to engage with the material and become familiar with the format of the test before taking the PSAT in October of their junior year.   PSAT test scores do count; those scores are referenced to determine Merit Scholars, and free practice tests are available online through College Board.  Features of the PSAT 10 are as follows:
  • The PSAT 10 is a three-hour exam, featuring a math section and a reading/writing section.
  • Each section is worth 760 points for a possible total composite of 1520.
  • The math section targets algebra and advanced math problems.  A spring testing session is optimal as sophomores will be concluding a year of Algebra II.
The test will be offered at York Catholic from 8-11 AM on Saturday, April 17.  Any interested sophomore must register by February 19.  Click here for the registration form; they are also available in the main office.  Cost per student is $20.00, and checks can be made out to York Catholic.  Questions may be directed to Kathy Hand at [email protected].
Catholic Schools Week
York Catholic will be joining the nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools January 31-February 6.  Students will honor service to the community, faculty/staff, and religious life throughout the week.  Other activities include:

Jan 31-Feb 6 - Virtual Christmas Concert
We were unable to bring you our Christmas Concert in December due to COVID-19, however, our students have been hard at work recording their performances to share with you now.  Enjoy the musical talents and the sounds of the Christmas season by clicking here January 31 through February 6.  The password is:  welovechristmasmusic2020

Thursday, February 4 - Catholic Schools Week Mass celebrated by Rev. Jonathan Sawicki, Diocesan Vocation Director.

Friday, February 5 - Green and Gold Spirit Shirt Day
The first Friday of the month is usually Spirit Shirt Friday where students pay $1 toward the YC Mini-THON to dress in a YC spirit shirt.  Instead of Spirit Shirt Friday tomorrow, and in celebration of Catholic School Week, all students can fully dress down (jeans are OK), but must keep within the spirit of wearing green or gold.  There is no charge for dressing down.
College & Career Update
Career Exploration Programs
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are invited to sign up for the York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) Career Exploration programs for the Winter/Spring of 2021. YCAL establishes relationships with businesses to provide our High School students with opportunities to explore different careers at no cost to the student. Participation in these programs increases students' understanding of the unique training, education, and work standards required to successfully pursue a given career path. There are sixteen new programs which include Architecture, Culinary Arts, Education, Financial Services, Hospitality, Psychology, Sports Management, and Manufacturing.  Virtual meetings will be held for each area of interest beginning at 10 AM on different days in York Catholic's College & Career Counseling Center. Students can attend more than one session of interest. Students can sign up now by clicking here.

Senior Mid-year Grade Report
Just a reminder that if your senior student needs a mid-year report completed for their colleges on Common Application, Mrs. Phillips will be uploading the mid-year transcripts on the Common Application beginning January 29 when mid-year grades are finalized. If a mid-year transcript is required for a non-Common Application college, please email Ms. Dill at
[email protected] to request the transcript be sent via our SCOIR Guidance system.

College Guaranteed Admission Spotlight
At York Catholic, we have six colleges that have signed agreements with us to provide guaranteed admission with minimum criteria provided by the colleges. We are in the process of adding a seventh university to this list.  Each week, we will highlight a different college with their admission criteria for a guaranteed admission to their college.

University of Scranton
The University of Scranton is a medium-sized, Jesuit university located in a medium-sized city in northeastern Pennsylvania.  Though located in an urban setting, the campus has beautiful open spaces with significant greenery and walkways to the numerous traditional buildings.  Academically, University of Scranton is competitive with admissions and offers undergraduate programs in sixty-five majors.

Students may also utilize many pre-professional concentrations, such as pre-medical, pre-law, and pre-dental. The university also has an Honors Program and the SJLA (Special Jesuit Liberal Arts) Program in which select students complete courses in moral philosophy, ethics, theology, and the humanities in addition to their normal course load. The university also grants graduate degrees in 29 fields, ranging from Accounting and Chemistry to Software Engineering and Theology. The university also offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy program and Doctor of Nursing Practice.  Please click here for more information about the University of Scranton.

The University of Scranton will guarantee admission  for bachelor's level programs (with the exception of programs listed in #2 on the agreement) to graduates of York Catholic High School who have a 3.00 GPA and either a 1080 SAT (EBRW & Math) or a 22 ACT composite score. Students who meet the above criteria will receive, at minimum, an annual $15,000 scholarship with a total value of $60,000.
Please click here for additional program requirements.

Students and parents are encouraged to email Mrs. Eva Phillips, College & Career Counselor, at [email protected] if you have questions about this Guaranteed Admission plan, other college plans in place with York Catholic, or the YCAL Career Exploration Program.
