Resources for Summer Heat-Related Needs

Resources are available for Garland residents who need financial or physical assistance to handle the summer heat.

  • Through the Dallas County Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program, qualified applicants can receive free air conditioning units. Call 214-819-1848.
  • Garland Customer Service and Garland Power & Light are donating box fans to Friendship House, 620 W. Avenue B, for distribution. Call 972-272-1010.
  • The Senior Source’s Beat the Heat campaign provides air conditioning units to elderly residents in need. Call 214-525-6191.
  • Salvation Army locations in Garland and throughout North Texas have partnered with Reliant to distribute fans. In addition, the Garland location is available as a cooling station. Visit GarlandTX.gov for full details.

Utility Bill Assistance Available
 
If you are having difficulty paying your utility bill, the City has several resources to help you.
 
You may qualify for a payment arrangement that allows you to extend the due date of your current bill. Call 972-205-2671 or email customer service.
 
There is help available through the City of Garland Customer Assistance Program. This program is a partnership between the City and local service agencies. The funds are administered and distributed to qualified customers by these agencies to those experiencing financial hardships. Learn more at GarlandTX.gov.
 
There is additional utility assistance available through local agencies. Visit the Utility Customer Service webpage at GarlandTX.gov to learn more. 
Fire Blood Drive Monday, July 25
Register now to participate in the Garland Fire Department Blood Drive!

Time slots are still available for appointments Monday, July 25, at the Garland Fire Department Administration parking lot, 1500 State Highway 66.

Reserve your spot today! Participants will receive $25 gas card and a beach towel after a successful donation, while supplies last.
Construction Work to Begin on Kingsley Road Railroad Crossing
Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, July 29, the Kansas City Southern Railway Company will start replacing the track infrastructure where it crosses West Kingsley Road between National Drive and Industrial Lane.

The entire roadway will be closed until the work is complete. The roadway should be open to traffic by noon Monday, Aug. 1. Please expect traffic delays and seek alternative travel routes if possible.

The businesses between National Drive and Industrial Lane will have limited access, and a detour around the work zone will be in place during the construction. If you have any questions, email Street@GarlandTX.gov.  
Band Together on the Square Concert Series Continues Friday, July 29

Garland Summer Musicals Continues Friday, July 29

Garland Summer Musicals continues its 2022 season with "Legally Blonde: The Musical," a fabulously fun award-winning musical based on the adored movie.

Follow the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!

Celebrate National SPAM Day Sunday, July 31, with a visit to the Manufacturing Victory WWII exhibit at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Garland Public Health Clinic Offers Back-to-School Vaccinations
With the Garland Independent School District’s Aug. 8 start date around the corner, here’s a reminder that the Garland Public Health Clinic at 206 Carver St. provides low-cost immunizations for infants and children through age 18 and immunizations for adults of all ages.

The Garland Public Health Clinic accepts walk-ins for immunization from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parents should bring a child’s immunization records with them. Call 972-205-3370 for more information.

GHFC Applications Due Friday, Aug. 12
The City will accept applications through Friday, Aug. 12, for a successor to a current Garland Housing Finance Corporation (GHFC) Board of Directors term that ends Aug. 31.
 
GHFC is a public nonprofit corporation. The programs offered by GHFC are designed to increase affordable housing opportunities while strengthening Garland.
 
A resume and letter of interest may be submitted
to René Dowl, City Secretary, at RDowl@GarlandTX.gov or to City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St., Garland 75040. Applicants will be interviewed by the Garland City Council at its Aug. 15 Work Session.

Downtown Construction Update: Main Street Reopens, Parking Available
Construction on the Downtown Square is progressing in Phase 2 with Main Street open and construction now on State Street. 

During this time, businesses will remain open and so will the adjacent sidewalks. Learn more at GarlandTX.gov.
