NEWS & UPDATES
COLLEGE NEWS
Our intellectual environment thrives because of our:
·        Diverse perspectives;
·        Dynamic close-knit community; and,
·        Pursuit of meaningful impact.

This College of Architecture culture statement is ever-so-important to remember as the world around us is filled with divisiveness. We respect the diverse perspectives of our community – and are richer for them. We are a close-knit community, one where it is so important to respect each other, our similarities and our differences. Please remember this as we traverse the next period of time, and practice one of our Values: “Practice Empathy.” I continue to be so proud of our ability to truly LISTEN to each other, and to be respectful in our discourse.

Have a wonderful week,
Kathy

Last Day to Withdraw From a Course
The advising staff would like to remind faculty and students that the last day to WITHDRAW from one or more full semester courses for fall 2020 is Wednesday, October 28th.

A few things you should know about “Withdrawing” from a course include:
·NEVER withdraw from a course without checking with your advisor first.
·Be sure to discuss the impact withdrawing will have on your scholarships and financial aid packages.

·Be sure to discuss with University Housing how withdrawing may impact your housing eligibility.
·If your full-time or part-time enrollment is verified to receive discounts on your medical/car insurance or your parents’ health and auto insurance, withdrawing from classes may affect your eligibility for continued discounts.
If you have questions about withdrawing from a course, please stop in and see a member of our advising staff.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Before we continue featuring the great work that is occurring in our studios, I wanted to take a minute to give everyone a big “high five” and pat on the back for doing their part in not only keeping our community safe on campus; but for being accountable and meeting the challenge of producing excellent work and continuing to be invested in your learning. Believe me, I know that the pace and logistics of managing multiple courses with varying communication and organizational methods is time consuming, that our efficiency rate is likely down in completing tasks and that motivation can be hard when we are not amongst our peers and colleagues in a typical design school scenario. That being said, I am so impressed and encouraged by the work I see and discussions regarding the “climate and culture” when speaking to you students and the faculty. We have only four weeks left, and I hope you are able to put in what you can to feel proud, accomplished and inspired by your work and the work of your classmates.
This week’s studio feature takes a look into our newest faculty member, Dr. Sonya Turkman’s third-year interior design studio (IDES 310).
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
It was great to see the students getting out and enjoying the ‘Great Outdoors’ in our last newsletter entry. The ‘biophilic release’ exposure to nature provides something society is coming to value more and more. While it is not a cure for COVID-19, ‘the great outdoors’ is becoming the place where people can come together to meet with each other. These moments are allowing urban dwellers the opportunity to experience what cities could be like if they gave greater weight to the pedestrian experience instead of allowing vehicles to be the dominant presence. When properly socially distanced, our parks, plazas, landscaped sidewalks and closed street sidewalk cafes are becoming more and more important to our rapidly urbanizing worlds. More -
