Film lovers are in for a real treat as a happy coincidence of pandemic induced schedule changes has resulted in three festivals featuring new and recent releases by mostly independent filmmakers taking over Orange County. All three festivals will be hybrids, with both live and virtual screenings and events. The grandaddy of them all is the celebrated Newport Beach Film Festival, usually held in the spring, which will offer more than 150 films during its 21st annual showcase this month. The 12th OC Film Fiesta, is produced by Media Arts Santa Ana (MASA), and will include more than 40 films. Viet Film Fest, begun in 2003, has about 50 films being offered.

Arts Orange County Convenes Arts Education Advocates

Arts Orange County, long a leader in arts education advocacy in our community, accelerated its efforts at the time of the COVID-19 shutdown in anticipation of possible threats to the public school arts education ecosystem. Working in tandem with longtime partners Orange County Department of Education and the Fourth District PTA, and with Create CA (formerly California Alliance for Arts Education), ArtsOC has invigorated its work with the assistance of local volunteer arts education advocates each of whom has taken on responsibility for focusing upon a local school district. They are not officially affiliated with their respective school districts identified below. ArtsOC gathered the group recently in its offices for a day of information sharing, a discussion of best practices, and strategizing. Seen above are (from the left): Michelle Deziel, Orange Unified School Distrct; Gabriella Rollins, Placentia-Yorba Linda School District; Scott Fitzpatrick, Visual & Performing Arts Coordinator, Orange County Department of Education; Charlene Ashendorf, Newport-Mesa Unified School District (and Chair of the City of Costa Mesa Parks, Arts and Community Services Commission and Chair of the City of Costa Mesa Cultural Arts Committee); Karen Ahola, ArtsOC's Advancement Officer; Tina Van Dam, Saddleback Valley Unified School District (and member of the Board of Directors of Arts Orange County); Madeleine Spencer, Santa Ana Unified School District; Mai-Phuong Nguyen, Fountain Valley Unified School District; and Shanin Ziemer, Orange County Arts Now Ambassador (Arts Now is a program of CREATE CA).

On Board Hers.jpg

"On Board(Hers)" involves mobilizing women immigrants and refugees--or their descendants--to tell their stories of border crossing and immigration. Artist Lucille Toth gathers these stories and transforms them, along with the participants, into a dance composed of gestures and words. Created in 2018, "On Board(Hers)" has been realized several times--with Syrian and Afghani refugees in Ohio, with Mexican immigrants in Nogales, Arizona, and in Germany and France with a diverse group of women.
