Section of St. Charles streetcar line to shut down for maintenance starting Monday
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority announced a two-day shutdown of a portion of the St. Charles streetcar route for planned maintenance.
Beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, service will be suspended from Erato Street to Canal Street along the route. Temporary bus service will be provided.
New Orleans ranked #1 city for BBQ, according to Chef’s Pencil
An analysis of restaurant reviews online led to New Orleans being named the number one city for BBQ.
Did you know, May is National Barbecue Month? Founded in 1963 by the Barbecue Council, National Barbecue Month celebrates this favored pastime that has become deeply rooted in American culture.
Chef’s Pencil says few other topics generate as much fierce debate as to the humble BBQ. How to make a great BBQ or where to enjoy the best in the country can quickly spiral into a very heated conversation.
For the much-needed answers to the above questions, Chef’s Pencil turned to TripAdvisor to find out which cities are the best for enjoying a fantastic BBQ. The team analyzed TripAdvisor ratings of all BBQ joints in the nation’s top 75 largest cities and ranked the cities based on their average rating.
They also ranked the cities by the number of BBQ places per capita, as well as those with the highest number of top-rated BBQ places (rating 4.5 and higher).
Overall, there were 2,020 analyzed. They each must have offered BBQ on their menu and had at least 5 reviews. From the final rankings, they excluded cities with less than 10 BBQ restaurants within their city limits.
New Orleans library locations will fully reopen to the public later this month after a year of restrictions due to COVID.
Starting Monday (May 17), people can enter the library without making appointments. In-person, outdoor programming will resume as well. Masking and social distancing will still be required.
The library staff will continue to offer contactless pick-up service too.
Leaders with the City of New Orleans urge residents to prepare now for hurricane season.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the Director of Emergency Management Collin Arnold joined other public safety leaders to discuss preparations ahead of the season starting June 1.

"We're encouraging residents to make preparations now," Cantrell said. "We need to take heed. We're not making this up. This is not a joke."
Cantrell said the city is prepared to open mass shelters should a storm prompt evacuations. These spots would maintain social distancing, the mayor said, adding that those who assist at the shelters will wear masks. But she demanded residents take other precautions into their own hands.
"The first step toward preparation is being vaccinated," Cantrell said.
City officials are also taking precautions with its drainage system. 97 of New Orleans' 99 pumps are working. The city's Sewerage and Water Board hopes to have all its pumps back up by June 15.
"It's a fragile system," city infrastructure chief Ramsey Green said. "But assuming things look good, we're going to be in a very stable position."
Create a Hurricane Kit:
A basic emergency supply kit should include the following recommended items:
  • Water - one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
  • Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
  • Flashlight.
  • First aid kit.
  • Extra batteries.
  • Whistle to signal for help.
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
  • Manual can opener for food.
  • Local maps.
  • Cellphones with chargers and a backup battery.
  • Personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer
From watch to warning, know your hurricane terms
It is important to know the difference between the severity of storms during Hurricane Season.
Below is an explanation so you properly plan for an emergency in the event of a natural disaster.
Tropical storms and hurricanes each have two descriptors, a watch and a warning. A Watch means tropical storm or hurricane conditions are possible in the “watch area.” A watch is issued up to 48 hours in advance of the onset of tropical storm-force winds.
A warning is issued when a tropical storm or hurricane conditions are expected in the “warning area.” A warning is issued up to 36 hours in advance of the onset of tropical storm-force winds.
Hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm-force. Watches and warnings are issued in advance of the onset of tropical storm-force winds (39-73 mph)
How we rate hurricanes
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained winds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Category 3 and above are considered major hurricanes, but precautions should still be taken for Category 1 and 2 storms. NOAA and Weather.gov put together the following information that explains how each storm category is defined and what type of damage is expected.
Tropical Depression
A tropical depression is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained surface winds (one-minute average) of 38 mph or less.
Tropical Storm
A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained surface winds ranging from 39-73 mph.
Category 1: Sustained winds of 74-95 mph
Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roofs, shingles, vinyl siding and gutters. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days.
Category 2: 96-110 mph
Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage: Well-constructed frame homes could sustain major roof and siding damage. Many shallowly rooted trees will be snapped or uprooted and block numerous roads. Near-total power loss is expected with outages that could last from several days to weeks.
Category 3: 111-129 mph (Major Hurricane)
Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.
Category 4: 130-156 mph (Major Hurricane)
Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
Category 5: 157 mph or higher (Major Hurricane)
Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
Entertainment venues in the ‘Big Easy’ can apply for financial relief starting Monday, May 17
The New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund announced the start of a grant program that will see $600,000 distributed in financial support of musicians and artists struggling amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The grants will be distributed to individuals and venues through June 30, or until the funds are depleted.
Spirit Airlines to start
direct flights from
New Orleans
to Cancun, Honduras
Spirit Airlines said that it will start in July two new direct international flights from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport -- one to Cancun, Mexico, and the other to San Pedro Sula, Honduras -- both of which were supposed to have commenced in March last year but were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The flights to Cancun will start on July 2 and to San Pedro Sula on July 8 and mark the first international flights from New Orleans for the airline. They will run four times a week to Cancun and three a week to Honduras.
The revival of Spirit's flight are the latest sign that air travel is picking up. All of the major airlines operating from New Orleans have picked up the frequency of their routes and some have added domestic routes as passenger traffic has picked up strongly over the past six weeks.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Bring Back Me Time Challenge as New Mother’s Day Tradition Benefiting Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center
at Ochsner Baptist
Virtual Challenge Begins May 16, 2021 and Ends June 15, 2021
(New Orleans) – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Health are teaming up again to bring back the Me Time Challenge and create a new Mother’s Day tradition. The virtual challenge aims to help women prioritize self-care and wellness with health focused tips and special access to wellness and nutrition offers from Ochsner Health. The challenge is open to everyone from fitness beginners to workout experts, and participants will have the option of walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming or any physical activity they choose to accumulate their miles.

All registrants receive a virtual bib, commemorative Me Time Challenge tank top or t-shirt (participant’s choice) and a finisher’s medallion. The entry cost for both the individual and team challenges is $36. A portion of challenge proceeds and all donations from participants will go directly to the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist, which provides comprehensive, coordinated care using a holistic approach to the unique healthcare needs of women, including specialized gynecologic care for cancer survivors.

“Mental and physical health are such vital issues for women in today’s world,” said Me Time Challenge Operations Director Kristen Stuart. “This year, we’re aligning Me Time Challenge with Mother’s Day to encourage women to create new Mother’s Day traditions and help people from around the globe get up, get out, get moving and get excited about improving their physical and mental health.”

There are two formats for the challenge: a 30-mile individual challenge and a 100-mile team challenge. For every five miles a participant logs, they will unlock health focused tips along with special access to wellness and nutrition offers provided by Ochsner Health to better physical and mental health. Participants will start tracking their miles via RunSignUp.com beginning Saturday, May 15. The deadline to log all individual or team miles is Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

“The Me Time Challenge is all about carving out time to focus on your overall wellbeing – both the physical and the mental – while also giving back to women in the community in need of the holistic care and support provided by the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist,” said Elizabeth Lapeyre, MD, Medical Director for the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist. “It’s important to remind women to take a step back from the busy world and tune into what their physical and mental needs are in that moment. If one is out of balance, the other is too and can impact your overall wellbeing.”

NATIONAL WALNUT DAY
Each year May 17th recognizes the holiday squirrels go a little nutty over, National Walnut Day.
Rounded, single-seeded stone fruits of the walnut tree, walnuts are a high-density source of nutrients, particularly proteins and essential fatty acids. Like other tree nuts, walnuts must be processed and stored properly.
Grown for their seeds, the Persian or English Walnut and the Black Walnut are the two most common major species of walnuts.
  • English Walnut
  • – originated in Persia
  • – commercially produced
  • Black Walnut
  • – native to eastern North America
  • – high flavor
  • – hard shell and poor hulling characteristics prevent its commercial growth for nut production.
The husk of the walnut is peeled away from the shell at harvest. It contains juice that will readily stain anything it comes in contact with. The husk juice has been used as a cloth dye.
The United States exports more walnuts than any other country. Ninety-nine percent of the nation’s commercial English walnuts are produced in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys of California.
Baking and Cooking
Bakers use walnuts for a variety of reasons. Walnuts add crunch and flavor to baked goods such as pies, breads, and cakes. Keep walnuts on hand to add to muffin, pancake and waffle mixes, too. But baked goods aren’t the only recipes in the kitchen where walnuts come in handy. They also get added to soups and other savory dishes. Walnuts complement fresh vegetables and salads, fruits, and more. Finely chopped walnuts create excellent crusts for fish, chicken, and pork. Don’t hesitate to explore recipes when walnuts are in season.
NATIONAL CHERRY COBBLER DAY
May 17th each year dedicates the celebration of National Cherry Cobbler Day to the delicious tart dessert that many enjoy with ice cream.
In the United States, cobbler refers to a variety of dishes consisting of a fruit filling (cherry being a popular choice ) covered with a batter, biscuit, or pie crust that is then baked. Some cobblers have both a top and bottom crust.
Cobblers originated in the early British American colonies. Due to the lack of suitable ingredients and proper cooking equipment, English settlers were unable to make their traditional suet puddings. They improvised by covering a stewed filling with a layer of uncooked biscuits or dumplings.
A cherry cobbler differs from a crisp as a cobbler lacks oatmeal. Sometimes the cobbler is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, too!
Cherries also offer a bounty of nutrients. For example, the antioxidants in this red fruit protect cells from damage. Because cherries pack an anti-inflammatory punch, they may help reduce the risk of heart disease, too.

 Derby GisclairNostalgic Nawlins Memories
In 1878, workers dredging Bayou St. John discovered the remains of a Confederate submarine near the outlet to Lake Pontchatrain. It was removed to the shore where it was photographed by George Mugnier. It would find its way to the amusement park at Spanish Fort where it was incorrectly named "Pioneer."
In 1908 the submarine was relocated to the grounds of Camp Nichols Confederate Home on Moss Street at which time the interior was filled with concrete ostensibly to preserve the boat.
In 1942 the submarine was purchased by the Louisiana State Museum and has been on display at various sites around Jackson Square, mostly recently the Presbytère until 1999 when it was relocated to Baton Rouge. The concrete was removed, and the submarine was restored and put on display at Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

wine dinner From the Southern Cape of Good Hope to Southern Louisiana’s Big Easy... We are so excited to be part of this special wine dinner! Here's the story - a new importer in town, South to South Wine Importers, caught the eye (and palate!) of Sommelier Michelle Gueydan who was so enthralled with the wines that her first call was to Susan Spicer to pair up with her favorite local chef on a wine dinner.

The portfolio, which focuses on artisanal, family-owned and sustainably produced South African wines, is being brought to us by Suzaan Laing who spends her time between Cape Town, South Africa and New Orleans, searching out these little gems that will certainly expand your scope of quality driven Cape Town Wine production. She was happy to share her knowledge on traditional foods of the region which helped inspire Chef Spicer’s menu.

So what do you think, ready for a traditional sit down wine dinner at a great neighborhood restaurant with a James Beard awarded culinary superstar and a passionate local somm presenting delicious new wines?? We certainly are! Join us on May 18 from 6-9PM at Rosedale - check out the menu and if you are interested reserve quickly - seats are limited and this will sell out. HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr explores Hedy Lamarr’s Hollywood stardom and inventive achievements in the war effort. A Viennese-born film star of the 1930s to 1950s known as “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World,” Lamarr stored away knowledge of munitions while married to Austrian arms dealer, Friedrich “Fritz” Mandl. She employed this knowledge to support the US Navy’s war effort during World War II by inventing The Secret Communication System with composer George Antheil, which made torpedoes more accurate. Also referred to as frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, her invention is used today in cell phones, Wi-Fi, CDMA, GPS, Bluetooth, and a myriad of other wireless systems.

Program
Selections from:
Johannes Brahms: Horn Trio in E-flat Major Op. 40
Join Birdfoot and a trio of musicians to explore the way that music unfolds in time, against the backdrop of memory.
Listening is an experience that plays on memory: as we listen to a musical line in the present, we make sense of it based on what has come before while also imagining what will come next. Brahms wrote his horn trio specifically for the Waldhorn (or natural horn), and the symbolism of this instrument, evoking primeval forests, galloping hunts, and distant farewells, adds yet another dimension to the rich tapestry of sound and memory. Brahms was himself a devoted scholar of early music, and his music often longs for a lost past. The Horn Trio plays with all these threads, weaving together history and personal experience.
Come Backstage with Birdfoot Artistic Director and violinist Jenna Sherry, pianist Shuann Chai, and natural horn player Teunis van der Zwart, to discover Brahms’s music through the textures and colors of historical instruments and delve into the many facets of musical memory.

New Orleans
Greek Festival
Greek Feast - A Tribute to the Greek Festival will be presented on May 28 and 29, 2021, in a drive-up only setting with all purchases preordered and prepaid. Although the annual Greek Festival is scheduled for early November, the Holy Trinity Cathedral family will present some familiar, as well as new, offerings during the Memorial Day weekend that will include “heat and eat” options; convenient frozen items for individual or family enjoyment; and some cold salad, vegetable, and dessert delicacies. Whatever your selection, you can anticipate a delicious Greek fare!

Please note that pick-up hours were extended on the main day, Saturday, May 29, and three hours were added on Friday, May 28, to better serve you. Our goal is to provide an expedient and pleasant delivery experience for our patrons, particularly those who supported the Spring Greek Feast and had long wait times. By employing a more efficient delivery system, extending pick-up times, and limiting the number of orders per time slot, we aim to minimize your wait when you arrive. Also, for your convenience, a reminder will be emailed a few days prior to May 28 and 29, stating your selected time.
As always, your participation is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to serving you Memorial Day weekend!
