Cosumnes River

The Cosumnes River is the last remaining free-flowing river in California's Central Valley, meaning that it is one of just a few rivers in California without major dams. Named as the Mokelumne and Tuolumne rivers were, using the "-umne" suffix meaning "people of". The prefix is derived from the Miwok word "kosum" meaning "salmon". However, Chinook Salmon runs are rarely seen as a result of diversions in the area, illegal mining, and invasive fish species. Presently, there are no plans to introduce salmon to the Cosumnes.

King's River

The King's River begins along the sierra crest in one of the deepest gorges in North America and its namesake, King's Canyon. The King's River basin once fed a vast network of seasonal wetlands that supported millions of water flow, fish, and game animals but was impounded by the Pine Flat Dam in the mid-1950s. Above the dam, the river holds native trout, brown trout, small mouth bass, and designated "Wild Trout Water" by the California Department of fish and game. The installation of a hydroelectric plant at Pine Flat Dam in 1984 diminished the cold-water supply in the reservoir and deteriorated rainbow trout habitat as a result but in 1999, the state of California implemented the King's River Fisheries Managment Program, which is adding in recovery by mandating a cold-water pool in the reservoir.
