Take Action This Earth Day

Sustainability is at the forefront of all that we do. Whether it’s through greener infrastructure, initiatives or customer programs, we are doing our part to build a cleaner, greener and stronger L.A. But we can't do it alone. It takes actions big and small, in partnership with our customers and the communities we serve.

On the power side, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to fight climate change continues to be a priority for us. At the end of 2021, L.A.’s power portfolio was 55% carbon-free and our GHG emissions level was approximately 57% below our 1990 emissions baseline.

Through our energy efficiency rebates, free efficiency upgrades, and other programs, our customers saved nearly 448 GWh cumulatively during FY 2020-21. That amount of energy savings is comparable to offsetting electricity for 80,287 homes and reducing GHG emissions by 140,622 metric tons annually, which equates to removing 33,353 gasoline-fueled cars from the road!

When it comes to saving water, Angelenos continue to be heroes. Water use has dropped by over 30% in the past 15 years as our customers have diligently maintained their water-efficient habits. And while this year's record snowpack improved our water supply outlook, the extreme shift in weather patterns demonstrates the unpredictability of our snow and water levels each year. We continue to expand and secure a local sustainable water supply, and with our customers, continue to use water wisely.

As Earth Day fast approaches, it's a great time to think about the steps we can each take, big or small, to better care for our planet. If you've been meaning to take steps to live more sustainably, now is the time. Learn about how our programs can help.

The recent Board-approved initiative called the "Project PowerHouse” pilot program will end the requirement that developers of 100% affordable housing pay for power infrastructure upgrades. It will implement plans for faster power design services for affordable housing builders to align LADWP policy with Mayor Karen Bass’s homeless and affordable housing priorities.

LADWP Partners with LASAN to Bring a New Sustainable Water Supply for L.A.!

The Board of Public Works recently approved the design-build contract for the Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) at Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant (DCTWRP). This AWPF is a joint effort between LADWP and LASAN that will incorporate advanced treatment processes, including microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and an advanced oxidation process, to purify up to 19 million gallons per day. This project will recycle wastewater from the DCTWRP to replenish the groundwater basin in the San Fernando Valley, providing the City with a new resilient and sustainable water supply for more than 200,000 residents!

“When completed, this project will further strengthen LADWP’s ability to provide its residents and businesses with a safe, reliable, high-quality water supply,” said Cynthia McClain-Hill, President of the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners.

Vote in Your L.A. Neighborhood Council Election!

LA’s 99 Neighborhood Councils together form the grassroots level of the Los Angeles City government. The system was established in 1999 to connect their communities to City Hall. Neighborhood Councils advocate on issues like homelessness, housing, public safety, parks, and sustainability. They also provide a local voice in delivering City services to their communities. Find your Neighborhood Council and get involved.

Neighborhood Council elections start at the end of March in West LA; the last one is June 22 in the Southeast Valley. Both Vote-By-Mail and in-person voting at the polls are available this season, but mail ballots are only shared by request - they aren’t sent out automatically to voters. Learn more!

Partnering with Neighborhood Councils

We're the only department in the City of Los Angeles with a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Neighborhood Councils committing to regular and ongoing communication about our programs and policies. The 2023 - 2028 MOU was approved by the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners on January 24, 2023. The new MOU will be posted online soon!

The DWP-NC MOU Oversight and Advocacy Committees meet every first Saturday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Meetings are broadcast via webcast. Join us!
