Meet at the CML this Friday for rides to Sheetz for awesome food, followed by rides to a free stargazing event at Eno River. We will leave for Sheetz at 6:45 and stargazing begins at 8, so try to come on time!

Come listen or join in as the Qur’an is read in Arabic. Participants sit in a circle reading one or three verses at a time. Students are able to practice and improve their recitation. All levels of reading are welcome and supported.

This is an open discussion that follows the passages read on Monday . This group will explore the meaning of the Qur’anic verses seeking inspiration and practical guidance for life. Participants are encouraged to share one verse they connect with from the reading.

FRIDAY (1/31): MSA PRESENTS SUHAIB WEBB

We are beyond pleased and honored to welcome Imam Suhaib Webb to Duke to discuss the intersections between leadership and youth in the modern era.

Suhaib Webb, an American Muslim imam and scholar, has a degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and in Islamic law from al-Azhar University in Cairo. He was named as a "Faith Leader to Watch" by The Center for American Progress in 2016, selected by the Muslim Community as one of CNN’s 25 Most Influential Leaders; as well as one of "Five Hundred of the Most Influential Muslims" by the Royal Islamic Studies Center in 2019.

He is currently the resident scholar at the ICNYU and teaches a course at NYU on Islamic Law and Ethics.

The CML is planning a Graduation Banquet for next May and we want to honor ALL of our graduating students. BEEN HERE, STILL HERE TRAININGS
This spring, the Center for Muslim Life will offer monthly opportunities to attend our training titled Been Here, Still Here: Muslims and Islamophobia in the US . Join us on Thurs, Jan 30th , 9:30-11:30am; Wed, Feb 26th , 9:30-11:30am; Thurs, March 5th , 5-7pm; or Thurs, April 2nd , 5-7pm.

This introductory training includes a presentation and facilitated discussion about the history and presence of Muslims and Islamophobia in the US. The learning objectives include:

1) To recognize stereotypes of Muslims and understand the diversity of racial backgrounds, practices, and experiences of US Muslims
2) To understand the critical role Islam and Muslims have played in the history of the US
3) To identify the language and rhetoric of Islamophobia and grasp its effects on US Muslims

DUKE AUTHENTICITY PROJECT RETREAT : Student Leadership and Duke University Housing and Residence Life will be hosting the first spring Duke Authenticity Project retreat on Friday, February 7 - Saturday, February 8 at Camp New Hope! This retreat is open to all undergraduate students and aims to help them build community and a culture of authenticity at Duke.

Our curriculum is created around the five pillars of authenticity:
Values, Character, Relationship with Self, Relationship with Others and Bringing it Back to Campus, in addition to theoretical foundations of the Social Change Model of Leadership, Self-authorship, the Storytelling Project Model, Intersectionality and the Process of Becoming.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVES OF SOUTH ASIA: Diya, Duke’s undergraduate South Asian Student Association, is organizing a project that will showcase
the implications of historical conflicts in South Asia, often under-represented in our history as South Asian/Americans. We hope to acknowledge some of the emotional experiences of individuals who have lived through or been affected by events such as the Partition, various independence movements, the Sri Lankan Civil War, or other political, regional, cultural and/or religious conflict in South Asia.
