FIMI
The demolition phase of FIMI, as it applies to the Pines, is now complete. This included the removal of twenty-one houses in the eastern communities, six house relocations and a large amount of deck and accessory structure removal. The project began the second week of October with a targeted completion date of January 25th. The three additional weeks were primarily due to weather delays. There is still limited demolition work to do in Water Island and Davis Park, but that is the subject of a separate contract. That work will conclude in another month. As many of you know, I have participated in weekly meetings/conference calls to keep track of the project and to keep myself and the community leaders informed. I have certainly learned a great deal about how a large government construction project works, with all its extensive safety, worker health, environmental monitoring and quality control procedures. Sometimes I felt lost in the details. But the demolition phase is done and according to the original plan and the next thing is sand placement. As we draw closer to sand placement, I have a better picture of what lies ahead. There are four firms in North America that do this kind of work, and two of them, Weeks Marine along with Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, have projects currently underway in the New York area. This means that the dredges are near-by, one at the Fire Island Inlet and one at Long Beach. These projects are expected to complete in April. We anticipate that both of those companies will be bidding on the sand placement in the eastern fire island communities. Those bids are due by March 21st, with contract award expected by the end of April. We anticipate the award of the contract to one of these two companies. We won't know the timetable for the sand placement, and when it will reach the Pines, until May, but we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Fire Island Boulevard
The work on the roadway through the community has been stopped by winter weather. We are working with the Pines Chamber of Commerce to get the project back on track.

Share-A-Thon
A large  number of homeowners in the Pines rely on summer rentals. Renters contribute to the success of The Pines community. FIPPOA encourages you to participate (either as a homeowner looking for renters, or as a renter looking for a summer share) in the annual Share-A-Thon on Wednesday, March 13th at The Center.

Fire Island National Seashore
FINS had long planned a deer culling project to keep the white-tailed deer population under control. However, a judge has granted a stay at the request of animal welfare groups to suspend the plan pending further hearings.

With summer just around the corner, this is the perfect time to renew your membership or join FIPPOA before the 2019 season gets in full swing. If you renew or join before April 15th, we'll send you a copy of The Sandbook and a wagon rack sticker. Everyone can access our new system that makes it easier than ever to manage your membership as well as your donations to The Pines Foundation. We encourage you to sign up and create a member profile. And if you have already renewed or joined, we thank you and look forward to seeing you soon!

Mary "Bunny" Diehl

Mary "Bunny" Diehl passed away on January 29, 2019 at the age of 98.   Bunny, along with her longtime companion, Laura Delano Eastman, were homeowners of 59 Bay Walk, Fire Island Pines, up until 2005, when Laura passed away.    Bunny sold the property at that time.   Laura was one of the founding board members of the Fire Island Pines Property Owners' Association and she organized and directed our arts program at the Pines Community House, for years, prior to the founding of the Fire Island Pines Arts Project.    Laura was responsible for introducing composer and lyricist Jerry Herman to Fire Island Pines, where he wrote some of the Hello, Dolly! score on her bayfront deck.   Laura spent much of her childhood with her cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt, who helped raise her, growing up in The White House during World War II.  Bunny and Laura spent their time commuting between Fire Island Pines, East Hampton, New York City and Jost Van Dyke.
