The God Who Sees
“Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar.”
Psalm 139:1, NRSV
Recently, on an early morning run, I came to an open field near Brays Bayou. I noticed a group of men gathered together flying drones. Curious, I asked what they were doing and quickly they told me they were testing new, night-vision equipment. This technology would enable them to take pictures and videos in the dark. To show me their work, they asked me to run around the field as the drones hovered high above. Returning to the trailer, they showed me the footage. With precision, the cameras captured my image perfectly all the way down to the logo on my shoes. The eye of the camera cut through the darkness and lit up my every move.
As I left the site, I marveled at technology and what it could capture. I also thought about God. If a drone could fly high above and see me in the darkness, imagine what God Himself sees. The drone, in that moment, became a symbol of the One who sees me.
Life itself is sometimes, at best, challenging. There are times when the darkness is so dark that we feel helpless and, even worse, we feel unseen. The heaviness can be overwhelming. Flooded with doubt and uncertainly, we wonder if the sun will ever rise. It is in times like these when I am drawn to Psalm 139. It is filled with hope, and reminds me of who I am and to whom I belong.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14, NIV
No matter where I find myself, God sees me, but more importantly, He is there with me. Like night vision cameras on a drone that can see me in the dark of night, God Himself sees me when the darkness of life’s circumstances has overwhelmed me.
“Darkness is not dark to you: the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike.”
Psalm 139: 10-11, NRSV
