Message from
CHHA National Executive Director
Greetings!

Happy Summer and welcome to the June edition of IListen.

What an amazing spring we had at CHHA. We launched the Get in the Hearing Loop Campaign in mid-June, a cooperative effort with our networks across Canada, the hearing industry and many retailers, libraries and public spaces.

We are also pleased to announce that, thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs program, the National Office has hired two summer students to assist in communications and the rollout of the Get In the Hearing Loop Campaign! Welcome aboard Sydney and Sarah.

There are also a few days left in June and the CanadaHelps donation contest that turns every dollar donated through the CanadaHelps website to CHHA into a chance for CHHA to win $20,000!

Enjoy your read!

All the best,

Lee Pigeau

We launched!
CHHA officially launched its nationwide "Get in the Hearing Loop" campaign on Thursday, June 16, 2022, with a virtual live webinar.

The webinar was the first of many educational awareness campaigns highlighting the advocacy efforts and resources available to increase hearing loop technology in public spaces throughout Canada.

Special guest speaker Dr. Juliëtte Sterkens, a global professional advocate for the use of telecoils and loop systems, helped kick off the campaign. Juliëtte was integral in launching this campaign with the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), and its success inspired us to bring it North of the border.

Thank you to our guest speakers, Mandy Kerr City of Burlington, Cindy Gordon CHHA Edmonton, Levi Janosi CHHA Hamilton, and Kim Scott CHHA Sudbury. All speakers shared stories of the impact hearing loops have made in their community. Thanks to Stephanie Brown and Marc Gagnon of Hearing Assistive Technology Group (HAT Group) CHHA's technical partner for supporting this important initiative.

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, 3 million Canadians are admitted to the hospital annually, with an average length of stay lasting seven days.

Dr. Ruth Warick presents at the CRPD
The 15th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD (COSP15) took place at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, from 14 to 16 June 2022.

This year's theme: Building disability-inclusive and participatory societies in the COVID context and beyond

Ruth Warick addressed the need for affordable and quality hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive technology captioning, noise reduction and for hearing health to be part of the public health agenda at the Conference of States Parties at the UN.
“Above all, we require a society that fosters inclusion, recognizes the diversity of disability including hearing loss and upholds our human rights,” Warick said.

The video can be found on the COSP website. A link to the video is below. Go to the 34-minute mark for Dr.Ruth Warick's presentation
Empathy Is the Secret Ingredient in Person-Centered Care

Empathy is defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” In the context of hearing care, empathy helps you imagine how you would like to be treated if you or someone you loved had hearing loss...
I’m Just Going To Rest My Ears
By Gael Hannan

Both of my parents used to say I’m just going to rest my eyes for a bit. As kids, we knew that we were about to be tuned out. Nothing in the world requiring their attention at this minute was going to get it. We had to find someone else to bother, because mom and dad were closing their lids over their eyeballs. A blanket for the eyes. An eye-nap, turning off visual stimulation...

What is motivational interviewing? The 4 principles you need to know

Have you heard about the benefits of Motivational Interviewing?
This communication technique is quite useful for hearing care professionals during their appointments because:
  • It supports the clinician in promoting change in their clients.
  • It helps to start conversations about difficult topics and/or helps introduce new words/terms related to a health diagnosis.
  • It helps you choose the language necessary to support your client while acknowledging the internal/external work they are already doing.
