Humans of HUPO
Each month we will highlight a member of HUPO. A diverse group of researchers representing different career stages, disciplines, geographical locations, and ethnicities will be invited to submit a profile for the monthly highlight. This initiative will improve visibility of HUPO members, advertise research and enhance the HUPO community. This month we are featuring:
Marlene Oeffinger, Canada

What is your current position and location?
I am an Associated Research Professor at the Institut de recherches cliniques Montréal (IRCM) and Professeure-chercheure agrégée at the département de biochimie et médecine moléculaire, Université de Montréal.

How did you get started in the field of proteomics?
I first attempted proteomics during my PhD in David Tollervey’s lab in Edinburgh. Our initial goal was to characterize pre-ribosomal complexes from yeast by mass spectrometry. But we weren’t very successful at it back then and the MS facility still in their optimization process. Needless to say, I changed my project. Read the rest of our interview with Marlene...

The new Human Immunopeptidome Project (HIPP) Team

The new Chair and co-Chair of the Human Immunopeptidome Project (HIPP) initiative are Michal Bassani-Sternberg and Nicola Ternette, respectively. We now have an executive committee composed of a motivated team of young researchers from around the world that are involved in different fields of immunopeptidomics. Visit our website to learn more about our team; we've added many features to facilitate communication and exchanges through our community. https://www.hupo.org/Immuno-Peptidome

The HIPP started in 2015 as a HUPO initiative. The long-term goal of HIPP is to make the robust analysis of immunopeptidomes accessible to any immunologist, clinical-investigator and other researchers to increase the impact of immunopeptidomics in immunology, vaccine and immunotherapy on a global scale.

Our very first webinar was a success with more than 150 attendees; save the date for the upcoming second webinar, which will be held on January 27th 2022 at 09h00 JST, featuring Patricia Illing, Koji Ueda and Joshua Elias.

Stay tuned for the launch of our 2nd HUPO-HIPP summer school. This event will take place from September 6th-9th 2022 in Oxford, UK.

Early Career Researcher (ECR) Initiative
The ECR Mentoring Sessions at HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 were a smashing success!

The HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Initiative hosted three mentoring sessions throughout the HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 Main Congress. These sessions covered a diverse array of topics with the hopes of engaging and informing trainees and early career researchers alike and featured influential speakers. Read more here...

Game-changing Meet-the-Experts sessions in the ECR Lounge at HUPO ReCONNECT 2021

Eight internationally recognized proteomics experts visited the ECR Lounge through the duration of the Main Congress: Dr. Lisa Jones (University of Maryland), Dr. Tiannan Guo (Westlake University), Dr. Juan Antonio Vizcaino (EMBL-EBI), Dr. Marc Wilkins (University of New South Whales), Dr. Kathryn Lilley (University of Cambridge), Dr. Yu-Ju Chen (Academia Sinica), Dr. Ling Hao (George Washington University), Dr. Peter Hoffmann (University of South Australia) and Dr. Susan Weintraub (UT Health San Antonio). Networking can sometimes be challenging as an early career researcher, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but these experts were enthusiastic to meet them all! In these 1.5 hour long drop-in sessions, early career researchers had the opportunity to ask questions about proteomics research, career paths, work-life balance, and – of course – a few funny stories from their careers. Participants learned how a 20-minutes cab ride can be used to pitch an idea, how important it is to not be shy and ask questions, and how refreshing a visit to the cinema can be after some hard work.

Congratulations to the winner of the HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 ECR Manuscript Competition, Dr. Yansheng Liu!

The Early Career Researcher Manuscript Competition was a tight match! Our three finalists, Dr. Yansheng Liu (Yale University), Dr. Mehdi Bouhaddou (University of California, San Francisco), and Dr. Stacey Malaker (Yale University) each gave fantastic talks at a dedicated oral session of HUPO ReCONNECT 2021, sponsored by Taylor & Francis. This was no easy decision for the panel of expert reviewers. In the end, Dr. Yansheng Liu was awarded the first-place winning title (cash prize of $1000). Congratulations to Dr. Liu and the two runner-ups, Dr. Malaker and Dr. Bouhaddou (cash prize of $500 each)! The competition was chaired by members of the HUPO ECR Initiative and EuPA Young Investigators Club, Maike Langini (Medicines Discovery Catapult) and Christian Moritz (University Saint-Étienne), and Dr. René Zahedi (Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research). Congratulations to the winner of the HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 Graduate Student Poster Competition,
Linda Berg Luecke!

The record number of submissions received this year for the Graduate Student Poster Competition (sponsored by Molecular Omics) shows that the future of proteomics is bright! An expert panel carefully reviewed the submissions, narrowing the cohort down to the top eight finalists, who showcased their research and participated in a riveting live Q&A during the HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 Main Congress. After careful deliberation, an expert panel of judges awarded first place (cash prize of $500) to Linda Berg Luecke (Medical College of Wisconsin), second place (cash prize of $150) to Fynn Hansen (Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry) and third place (cash prize of $150) to Kruttika Dabke (Cedars Sinai Medical Centre). Congratulations to the competition winners and finalists and thank you to all who participated! This competition was skillfully chaired by Dr. Giuseppe Palmisano (University of Sao Paulo) and Dr. Jessica Brandi (University of Verona) of the HUPO ECR Initiative and EuPA Young Investigators Club, respectively.
The HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 ECR Networking Hour connected researchers from around the globe!

The HUPO ECR Initiative hosted a networking hour during the HUPO ReCONNECT 2021 Main Congress. Networking has not been easy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the HUPO ECR Initiative wanted to address this crying need in a fun way! The cheerful and engaging networking session, which was masterfully led by Dr. Robert Rivers (National Institutes of Health) and Dr. Omar Mendoza-Porras (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) featured an interactive Q&A game, followed by themed Zoom breakout rooms that participants could hop between. The themes ranged from hobbies and mass spectrometry to future goals and predictions about where the field is heading. The networking hour had a great turnout and participation from a very lively, intelligent, and entertaining group! Remember to keep the networking going by staying in touch over social media!
