Welcome to our new video series, "The Diaconate."

With host Michael Rubbelke, we will be answering the question: what kind of men are called to serve the Church as permanent deacons? Meet the four men who are in formation to become deacons and their wives: Mike and Tracey Plenzler, James and Wendy Summers, Harry and Joanne Verhiley, and Phil and Claire Hayes. We will also get to know our very own Deacon Lou Giovannini and his wife Lori. Listen as they share their experiences of being called and formed to become deacons, how their ministry affects their family life, and how deacons serve our Church today. Meet a new couple each week!

This week, we hear from Wendy and James Summers, as they share their journey to Saint Pius X and how James heard the call to the diaconate.

God bless them!
Wait! What is a deacon? "Deacon" comes from a Greek word which means "service." Permanent deacons receive the sacrament of Holy Orders to assist the bishop and priests in serving the Church.

More specifically, deacons act in service of the sacraments, the Gospel, and ministries of charity. Deacons can baptize, witness marriages, preside over funerals, and perform special tasks at Mass like proclaiming the Gospel and preaching. Unlike bishops and priests, a deacon can be married when he is ordained (though he cannot remarry if his wife should die).

MOTHER OF DIVINE LOVE PRAYER

The following prayer will replace the parish stewardship prayer at Mass until further notice.

Mother of Divine Love, we entrust to you our nation and world, our families and loved ones, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

In this time of trial and testing, hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful.

For those already afflicted, obtain the grace of healing and deliverance.

For those working to help the sick and bring an end to this crisis, obtain the strength to continue their work.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, conform us to the will of the Father, remind us always of the love of your Son, Jesus, and bring his peace to our land and to our hearts.

Amen.
Saint Rocco, protector against the plague and all contagious diseases, pray for us!
