New Study Looks at Care Disparities in Nursing Homes

Dr. Ruth Palan Lopez is co-author of a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine (JAMA IM) that found several factors—including staff assumptions about minoritized groups—may play a role in the variability in the quality of care provided to U.S. nursing home residents with advanced dementia.

U.S. News Lists Best Jobs

Several professions of which the IHP prepares students have been highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its new Best Health Care Jobs list. The specialties are nurse practitioner (#1), physician assistant (#2), speech-language pathologist (#3), registered nurse (#5), physical therapist (#10), and occupational therapist (#11). The publication’s separate 100 Best Jobs List also ranked them as follows: NP (#2), PA (#3), SLP (#10), RN (#12), PT (#28), and OT (#31).
Team IHP Readies to Run 2022 Boston Marathon

Annual Ann W. Caldwell President's Lecture Held

The 2022 Ann W. Caldwell President's Lecture: Interprofessional Rounds presentation, "Partnerships Beyond the Clinic: Understanding How Social Determinants Impact Health and Well-Being," was held virtually on Wednesday, January 19. Panelists included Leah Gordon, director of diversity, MGH Patient Care Services; Cindy Diggs, community and cultural engagement manager, Office of Equity and Community Health, MGH; Nicolasa Lopez, family and community engagement director, Gardner Pilot Academy, Boston Public Schools; Sarah Coughlin, director of the Charlestown Coalition; and Sara Arman, health equity coordinator, GreenRoots.
More than 3 Million Steps

Nineteen teams with 57 faculty and staff members participated in the IHP’s New Year Step Challenge on January 24-28. Together, they took a total of 3,027,135 steps during that time. The Agony of Defeet! team of (l-r) Liz Pipes, Valerie Grande, and Clare McCully took top honors by recording 354,848 steps – an average of 23,656 each per day. Second place went to theCaRaTe team of Caitlin Fitzgerald, Rania Karim, and Teresa Kimberley with 237,673 steps, while third place went to the ARM team of Monica Arrigo, Jane Baldwin, and Laura Plummer with223,626 steps.

Sammy Davis, OTD ’23 (shown last season), participated in the Premier Hockey Federation’s All-Star Showcase on January 29. Three MGH Institute faculty members have been recognized by the Institute for their contributions to teaching excellence, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and mentorship. Named as 2022 Fellows of the Teaching Excellence Academy for Learning (TEAL) are Lesley Maxwell, MS, CCC-SLP, associate chair and an associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders; Josh Merson, MS, MS-HPEd, PA-C, CAQ-EM, associate chair and an assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies; and Keshrie Naidoo, PT, DPT, EdD, OCS, director of curriculum, coordinator of the Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, and an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy.

David Stovall, PhD, a professor in the departments of Black Studies and Criminology, Law, and Justice at the University of Illinois Chicago, will give the next E. Lorraine Baugh Visiting Faculty Lecture on Thursday, February 17, Noon–1:15 p.m. Dr. Stovall's discussion will engage the relationship between racism and health, as communities of color in large cities are bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic and health professionals throughout the country are coming to grips with the fact that structural racism deeply impacts health outcomes. Using critical public health and critical epidemiology, Stovall will show how, while many understand the current health crisis to be new, others have known it has been with us since time immemorial.
