The 64th Annual Meeting of the AAVLD is Just Weeks Away!

Greetings Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians:
It has been another unusual year and we all have been patiently enduring the slow trend towards normalcy during this recovery year. Despite what we have all endured, we are excited to be able to present an innovative 2021 AAVLD/USAHA Hybrid Annual Meeting to our diagnosticians. The combined on-site and virtual format will not only allow us to safely interact and progress professionally, but also provide greater flexibility with On-Demand options available to you over your busy work weeks to view segments of interest and importance to you. Here are some highlights of the upcoming 64th Annual Meeting of the AAVLD and the 125th Annual Meeting of the USAHA which begins virtually on October 4th and on-site on October 22nd in Denver, Colorado.

USAHA-AAVLD Annual Meeting - Hybrid

Dear members and stakeholders of USAHA and AAVLD,
USAHA and AAVLD are pleased to be moving forward with the hybrid Annual Meeting for October 22-26 at the Gaylord Rockies Hotel in Denver this year. We have been actively discussing the appropriate approach for the meeting for several months in light of the changing COVID situation. Just as the work of our associations is important, so is the health of all individuals involved. Having the choice to attend in-person or virtually provides the best approach to ensure members can engage at a level of their comfort.
USAHA and AAVLD expect on-site attendees to be vaccinated. The USAHA and AAVLD are scientifically oriented organizations with a select membership that is unique. While we will not be monitoring members’ vaccination status, we have confidence that membership will honor this request and meet our expectations. We want to provide a safe and secure meeting environment.
During the Annual Meeting we will follow all protocols required by the state, city and venue. We urge all attendees to take precautions to avoid the spread of COVID.
Whether you chose to attend in-person or participate virtually, we encourage you to register as soon as possible for the meeting. And for those traveling, don’t forget to make appropriate travel plans if you plan to be in Denver. Hotel reservations are due Sept. 28, and Meeting Pre-Registration closes Sept. 29, just a few days away.

- As of our January 2022 issue, JVDI joins the evolution of scholarly journal publishing by going online-only for AAVLD members – for full details, see our November 2021 editorial.

84% of respondents to our 2021 member communications survey were in favor of online-only publication of the Journal.
- Environmental benefits include: no consumption of ink and paper; no mailing wrappers (which resolves the issue of plastic versus paper); no mail deliveries; and no waste, recyclable or not, generated.
- These changes will also lead to some cost savings for AAVLD, allowing us to keep membership dues as low as possible.
- The transition to electronic publishing is happening worldwide and fits with the rest of our fully electronic publication process—from submission, through reviewing, revising, editing, proofing, and compiling.

The AAVLD office will send members an email notification of the Table of Contents of each bi-monthly issue of JVDI. Full articles are embargoed and accessible only to subscribers (including AAVLD members and libraries) for 12 mo following publication; members will sign-in to the AAVLD website to access full articles.

Effective November 2021, a full-issue, cover-to-cover PDF of the Journal will be available to all subscribers. As with a magazine or newspaper, the PDF can be scrolled through, or a topic selected and found by a word search.

We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe during this unprecedented crisis. We want to reach out to you on behalf of AAVLD as co-chairs of the membership committee. The strength of AAVLD as a corporate body largely depends on the commitment of its members and we want to heartily thank you for support of the organization over the years.
Our vibrancy as an organization depends on a strong involved membership base. In this regard, we remind you of the ongoing membership drive competition which due to COVID issues, we have now extended the competition to September 30, 2021.

How to submit: The competition is open to individual members and to Laboratories. The goal is to grow our organization’s membership through the recruitment of new members and bringing back previous members whose membership has lapsed by two or more years. 2021 New program that matches new members (mentees) with seasoned members (mentors) |

Dear AAVLD Members,
In an effort to ensure that our new members have a rewarding experience, the AAVLD membership committee is instituting a new program that matches new members (mentees) with seasoned members (mentors).
A mentee is a member that has joined within the last 2 years and a mentee is a member that has been in AAVLD for more than 2 years.
Mentors would be asked to make contact with their mentee prior to the Annual Meeting in October, attend the new member orientation with their mentee, and help the new members with questions and networking at the meeting. After the meeting you may periodically keep in touch and be a resource for them. If possible, mentors will be matched to mentees based on areas of interest.

The Accreditation Committee is considering the addition of new members, who would join the committee at the February 2022 meeting, for purposes of succession planning due to upcoming retirements. The Committee is currently composed of eighteen members and has at least two members from each of the seven regions of AAVLD, as required by the Association by-laws. The committee considers new members when regional vacancies, discipline expertise needs arise, or impending retirements are known as is the current situation.
The process to become a member of the Accreditation Committee is detailed in SOP AC 4 V 2015-10, Accreditation Committee Management (click here). New members are nominated from the ranks of the active Audit Pool (AAVLD members in good standing who have successfully completed Audit Pool training), have audited on AAVLD site visits, and are approved by majority vote of the Accreditation Committee. Nominated AAVLD members who meet the minimum requirements for committee membership will be considered at the October 2021 meeting.

University of Illinois President Tim Killeen on Monday honored 28 key leaders of the system’s COVID-19 response with the Presidential Medallion. The medallion is the highest honor that the system president can bestow.
In a ceremony at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) attended by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Killeen honored leaders behind the development of the SHIELD test-and-trace system and subsequent organizations created to expand its use beyond the system’s universities. Also honored were the leaders of clinical trials for vaccines at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), the first conducted in Chicago, and a mass-vaccination effort at UIC that has inoculated hospital staff and patients, students, faculty and, so far, tens of thousands of members of the public.
“I have never been more proud than I am today to recognize these colleagues and their leadership, said Killeen, awarding the first Presidential Medallions in his six years as president. "Their ingenuity and dedication and the hard work of thousands of their colleagues across the U of I System have saved lives on our campuses, in the surrounding communities, and well beyond. Their efforts have demonstrated in real time what the U of I System means to the people of Illinois and ensured that our response to the pandemic has been unlike that of any university system in the world. These initiatives are reflective of the power of the U of I System as a real force for innovation, positive change and the public good.”
Pritzker praised those honored Monday for their service to the state of Illinois and its residents.
“In our fight against COVID-19, the efforts of the University of Illinois System have been a real asset to millions of Illinoisans,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said. “That begins with the successful effort last year to keep campuses open to the more than 90,000 students enrolled at U of I System universities. But it extends to the tens of thousands of people who found access to life-saving vaccines in the Chicago area, students at universities and community colleges who have been protected by the SHIELD test, and this fall to students at more than 1,000 K-12 schools around the state who will be protected by access to SHIELD. I am deeply grateful to the leaders being honored here today and to the thousands of others who have been part of the U of I System's aggressive and ongoing response to the pandemic.”
Those receiving the Presidential Medallion for their roles in the U of System’s response to the pandemic are listed below.
From SHIELD, SHIELD Illinois and Shield T3
The SHIELD test-and-trace system includes the non-invasive, fast and reliable saliva-based test as well as the companion mobile application to deliver test results, all developed at UIUC. The test has been successfully used since the summer of 2020. SHIELD Illinois was created to share the SHIELD system across the state. The test is now in use or being launched at numerous other colleges and universities, community colleges, public community testing sites, private companies and – thanks to funding from the state – more than 1,000 K-12 schools. Shield T3 was created to spread the technology outside of the state, and it is in use at a number of other universities, in school systems in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and at private companies and other organizations outside Illinois. In all, well over four million tests have been administered.

Goldenfeld, Swanlund Endowed Chair and Center for Advanced Study Professor of Physics, UIUC; Kelsie J. Green, laboratory technician, UIUC Department of Chemistry; Paul J. Hergenrother, Kenneth L. Rinehart Jr. Endowed Chair in natural products chemistry, UIUC; Robin Holland, head of the Diagnostic Services Section, Plum Island Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and 2020 doctor of veterinary medicine graduate, UIUC; William C. Jackson, founder and principal officer of Shield T3 and interim executive director of the Discovery Partners Institute, U of I System; Sergei Maslov, professor of bioengineering and physics and Bliss Faculty Scholar, UIUC; John M. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, UIUC; Rebecca Smith, associate professor of epidemiology, UIUC College of Veterinary Medicine; William Sullivan, professor of landscape architecture and director of the Smart, Healthy Community Initiative, UIUC; Awais Vaid, deputy administrator and epidemiologist, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District; Kraig Wagenecht, senior director of external research partnerships, UIUC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation and executive director, SHIELD Operations; Jay Walsh, interim vice president for economic development and innovation, U of I System; Leyi Wang, clinical assistant professor and veterinary virologist at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, UIUC College of Veterinary Medicine; Ron Watkins, managing director of SHIELD Illinois and associate dean of strategic innovation, UIUC Gies College of Business; and Laura Wilhelm-Barr, senior director of special events, UIUC.
From UIC vaccine clinical trials and UIC/UI Health vaccine deployment
UIC has been a trial site for two national clinical vaccine trials, including the first trial conducted in the city. The trials matched the diverse demographics of the city and included strong representation of groups that were have been particularly affected by the pandemic. UIC and its academic health enterprise, UI Health, led an effort that vaccinated health system workers, and opened Chicago’s first mass vaccination site in February 2021 at Credit Unit 1 Arena, offering vaccines to the public as well as its own students, faculty and staff. UI Health continues to offer multiple clinics and other access for vaccinations in the city, and a team of student volunteers has been used to proactively schedule vaccination appointments for patients, focusing first on neighborhoods hardest hit by COVID-19. UIC is also conducting ongoing research on vaccine hesitancy.
Those receiving Presidential Medallions are Kimberly Bertini, director of nursing excellence and Magnet Program director at UI Health; Susan Bleasdale, chief quality officer, assistant vice chancellor for quality & patient safety, UI Health; Paul Gorski, senior director of clinical services, integration and operations officer, UI Health; Jerry Krishnan, associate vice chancellor for population health sciences and professor of medicine and public health, UIC ; Janet Lin, physician and professor of emergency medicine, UIC; Richard Novak, Harry F. Dowling Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, UIC; and Mary Kate Titus, administrative fellow, UI Health.
The Presidential Medallion is given to recognize individuals who support and bring distinction to the U of I System; enhancing and accelerating its ability to deliver on its mission in profound ways. The award is bestowed solely at the discretion of the president.
Previous recipients include Shahid Kahn, a UIUC alumnus who owns the Flex-N-Gate company, the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and English soccer team Fulham F.C., in 2013; civil rights leader Myrlie Evers, also in 2013; members of the Tuskegee Airmen, in 2007; and Thomas M. Siebel, UIUC alumnus and the founder, chairman and CEO of C3.ai, in 2001.

Tifton lab honored for program serving underrepresented rural communities
A University of Georgia lab in Tifton was recognized in August for its efforts to expand the number of underrepresented, first-generation and rural students who choose careers in science, technology, math and engineering.
According to a recent Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. government data, diversity remains lacking in STEM jobs, particularly among Black and Hispanic workers. This issue first needs to be addressed in the educational system. The UGA exploratory academy is the first laboratory-centered instruction model for undergraduate and high school students from underserved rural communities in South Georgia.
The academy is a full-day series of workshops that give participants a glimpse of careers in veterinary medicine, biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology and pathology through interactions with the faculty and technologists working at the lab.
Exploring career opportunities
“Our intent is to give these students an idea of what career opportunities exist besides being a veterinarian,” said Hemant K. Naikare, lab director and associate professor of infectious diseases. “Students learn about infectious diseases, public health, food security, etc. We increase their awareness and exposure to veterinary medicine with an emphasis on lab diagnostics.”
With the help of a New Approaches Diversity and Inclusion grant awarded by UGA’s Office of the President and Office of Institutional Diversity, the lab has been able to offer several full-day workshop series as well as a competitive two-week paid internship in each of the four microbiology disciplines: bacteriology, molecular diagnostics, serology and virology; clinical pathology and anatomic pathology.
Selected students observe and shadow the faculty and staff and receive hands-on experience and training in different veterinary para-clinical specialties.
Overall, 150 students participated in the workshops, including several students from the 4-H programs of the surrounding middle and high schools.
Increasing UGA’s footprint
The Tifton lab is surrounded by several undergraduate schools that have students from rural communities in South Georgia, including Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, which enrolls many first-generation college students from underserved communities, and Fort Valley State University, a historically Black university located in Peach County.
Most of the undergraduates are pre-med or animal science majors, said Naikare. “They are in awe because they get to see real clinical cases where the diagnostics lab plays a role. We’re trying to increase our footprint in South Georgia, increase educational opportunities and encourage students to pursue degrees at UGA.”
UGA’s exploratory academy was one of 79 programs to receive this award, which recognizes efforts by colleges, universities and outside organizations. From hands-on learning activities to mentorship and community support, each of the winning programs developed strategies to introduce a diverse group of students to academic, extracurricular and professional opportunities in STEM and prepare them for some of the nation’s most in-demand careers.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding AAVLD Membership:
When are my dues fee due?
They are due November 15 for the next calendar year. Many members pay for the next year when they register for the annual meeting. Lead time is needed to finalize committee appointments for the new year.
Does it matter who pays for my dues?
No. Your status will be the same with their respective privileges whether you pay, your employer pays, or your Uncle Vinny.
Are Lab Accreditation dues different than Institutional/Agency membership dues?
Yes
· Laboratory Accreditation dues are different and separate and are related to accreditation only and go to fund the accreditation program only.
· Whether accredited or not, a Laboratory (or Institution/Agency) may additionally become an Institutional/Agency Member. By doing so they are supporting the broad mission of the AAVLD and these funds go to support CE and training and all other activities of the AAVLD. Institutional/Agency Members are highly valued members and are demonstrating leadership and belief in our organizational purpose.
Do Institutional/Agency Member labs have to pay for their employees individual dues?
No. A laboratory, institution, agency or department can become a member under this category even without signing up their employees. They are simply supporting the AAVLD mission with their dues payment. Some states are not allowed to pay for employee dues; and some states have budgetary restrictions.
