....In 1876 a sod school house was used by a group from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South for their worship. Everyone brought their own chairs to church. God and the Holy Scriptures call them to gather and worship in community with like minded people.
....This church teaches biblical doctrine, proclaims a risen Lord and the gospel of Salvation. They gather in thanksgiving and praise to nurture one another in spirit.
....By 1884 the Methodist Episcopal Church, South had a parsonage and brick church at the corner of Beach and Second Streets. This building seated 200 with pews and an organ.
....Six years later a blizzard in 1897 damaged the little brick church and it was declared un-safe. The Methodists moved to having church in the Town Hall. A new church building, which seated 400 people, was erected at the Second and Beech Street (now Delgado’s). The lot at Fourth and Main Street was purchased by theMethodists Ladies Aid for $3,000, in 1907.
....On April 20, 1913 all the families of the church assembled at the old church on Second and Beech Streets.and they marched to their new building on Fourth and Main Streets, where services were held for the first time. Three years later a parsonage was erected just south of the church for $6,000.
....On June 13, 1977, a fire extensively damaged the old sanctuary, built in 1912. After an extensive 3 1⁄2 years the Building Committee led the congregation in completing the current Sanctuary, built on the same site. It was first used for worship on Dec. 7, 1980. They specialize in welcoming and caring for all who come to CUMC.
....The Mission Statement of the church is “We the people of God known as Christ United Methodist Church will be the Heart of Christ inthe Heart of Sterling by loving God, loving others, loving ourselves, and making disciples of Jesus Christ.”
...The Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) was the oldest and largest Methodist denomination in the United States from its founding in 1784 until 1939. It was also the first religious denomination in the US to organize themself on a national basis. In 1939, the MEC reunited with two breakaway Methodist denominations (the Methodist Protestant Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South) to form the Methodist Church. In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church.
