Time to Submit Your Book Recommendations

All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. Please indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print. We need your recommendations asap. Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.

Graduate Student Appreciation Day

On Wednesday, April 5th, about 15 COA graduate students celebrated Graduate Student Appreciation Day at an ice cream social and book give-away. The Gunter Library partnered with COA and a generous donor to provide the treats.

GCRL's Catherine Wilhelm takes Best in Show at Edible Book Fair

Each year libraries and cultural institutions around the world hold edible book festivals to celebrate the birthday of Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), the French author of a witty book on food entitled Physiologie du gout. Since its beginning in 1999, the festival has grown into an international event held annually on or around April 1.

What is an edible book?

An “edible book” is a creation made from edible materials that is inspired by a book title, character, or author. Don't worry -- it doesn’t have to taste good – it won’t be eaten.

Catherine won the contest which was held at the Gulf Coast Library on the Gulf Park Campus on April 3rd. Her entry was entitled "Romeo and Julianne"

New Books at Gunter Library

Lavishly illustrated with full-color geological maps, tables of strata, geological cross-sections, photographs, and fossil illustrations from the archives of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the Geological Society, the London Natural History Museum, and others, Strata provides the first complete presentation of the revolutionary work of nineteenth-century geologist William Smith, the so-called father of English geology. It illustrates the story of his career, from apprentice to surveyor for hire and fossil collector, from his 1799 geological map of Bath and table of strata to his groundbreaking 1815 geological strata map, and from his imprisonment for debt to his detailed stratigraphical county maps.

Humankind’s fascination with the animal kingdom began as a matter of survival – differentiating the edible from the toxic, the ferocious from the tractable. Since then, our compulsion to catalogue wildlife has played a key role in growing our understanding of the planet and ourselves, inspiring religious beliefs and evolving scientific theories. The book unveils wild truths and even wilder myths about animals, as perpetuated by zoologists – revealing how much more there is to learn, and unlearn.

Statistical Rethinking:

A Bayesian Course with Examples in R and Stan builds your knowledge of and confidence in making inferences from data. Reflecting the need for scripting in today's model-based statistics, the book pushes you to perform step-by-step calculations that are usually automated.

Bayesian Networks:

With Examples in R introduces Bayesian networks using a hands-on approach. Simple yet meaningful examples in R illustrate each step of the modeling process. The examples start from the simplest notions and gradually increase in complexity. The authors also distinguish the probabilistic models from their estimation with data sets.

Sandy beaches represent some of the most dynamic environments on Earth and examining their morphodynamic behaviour over different temporal and spatial scales is challenging, relying on multidisciplinary approaches and techniques. Sandy Beach Morphodynamics brings together the latest research on beach systems and their morphodynamics and the ways in which they are studied in 29 chapters that review the full spectrum of beach morphodynamics.

GCRL Science Café -

"Billfish Research in the Gulf of Mexico and Beyond"

Tuesday, April 25th - 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Hybrid - in-person and via Zoom

Caylor 104 (703 East Beach Drive, aka “Halstead” campus)

Presenter:

Jeremy Higgs

Assistant Director, CFRD

GCRL Center for Fisheries Research

Billfish conjure up an iconic image of sleek, majestic, predators which elusively cruise the world’s oceans. These fishes have long been romanticized by recreational anglers as the ultimate saltwater gamefish. Billfish are also an important component of the pelagic ecosystem and understanding their biology and ecology is vital for continued conservation. Scientists at USM’s Center for Fisheries Research and Development have been conducting research on billfish for over 25 years. The studies have largely focused on billfish within the Gulf of Mexico with partners from the recreational fishing community, conservation groups, and the fishing industry. These partnerships have provided the means to conduct research on life history projects (age, growth, and reproduction), diet studies, satellite tagging projects, larval fish surveys, and habitat surveys. Jeremy will be providing an overview of the current research being conducted on billfish by the CFRD team.
