Marshall Center Salutes Innovators
After being rescheduled several times because of the pandemic, the Marshall Center was able to hold our Innovation Awards event at the Army Navy Country Club on September 10. We hosted 120 guests for the award ceremony and dinner. The George C. Marshall Innovation Award was presented to three recipients.

  • For innovations in Defense Technology: Jared Shepard, founder and CEO of Intelligent Waves LLC and CEO of Hypori.
  • For innovations in Healthcare Services and Humanitarian Action: Dr. John F. Tisdale, MD whose work and research centers on developing curative strategies for sickle cell disease.
  • For innovation in Digital Transformation: The Department of Veterans Affairs for creating an easy-to-use digital platform for veterans to synthesize their interactions with the VA.

Keynote speaker Vint Cerf enthralled the audience with a rousing speech. The evening also included a very successful auction where our guests’ generosity far exceeded our expectations.

Thank you to our generous sponsors who made this evening so special: Accenture, REHAU, Toth Financial, Cerf's Up, Intelligent Waves LLC, Jars Residential Properties, Cognitio Keane Enterprises, Tom Greenspon, New Heritage, LTG Susan Lawrence, Bruce Roberts, The Rotary Club of Leesburg and Dodona Docents.
Museum Day Draws Attention
We were delighted to participate in Museum Day, an annual celebration of institutions that acquire, conserve, research, communicate and exhibit different aspects of our cultural heritage. Dodona Manor joined museums across the country on Saturday, September 18 in providing free admission to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Thank you to the nearly 100 visitors who joined us to make it such a special day!
A Transatlantic Discussion
on Ethical Leadership
In August, we launched the first edition of Five-Star Character: The George C. Marshall Ethical Leadership Conference with 16 high school students from the D.C. metro area at the Leesburg National Conference Center. This month, we launched a condensed, online edition of the program for 14 students from Main-Taunus-Kreis in Hessen, Germany.

After introducing students to General Marshall and the mission of the George C. Marshall International Center, conference instructor Pete Janhunen led them through introductions to the three pillars of the Marshall ethical leadership model: selfless service, unwavering integrity and visionary leadership. For each pillar, conference instructor Elizabeth Shannon shared brief vignettes from Marshall’s life and experience that demonstrated these principles in action. Students were then invited to engage in small group discussions about how they might use these principles in their own life and leadership styles.

Undeterred by time differences, an online learning environment and conversing in their second language, the students actively participated throughout the conference. We were delighted with the results and look forward to continuing to share this program with more students across the country and across the world.
Upcoming Photography Exhibit
Come celebrate Leesburg First Friday on October 1 at Dodona Manor with an outdoor Student Photography Exhibit from Loudoun Community Press! In August, we hosted LCP for a student photography workshop. This exhibit will showcase some of the works created during this class. Start your First Friday evening with us at 6 p.m. and then head into town for more fun!
We are offering a wide range of sponsorship opportunities to business owners for both of the events previewed below.

Attention: Veterans Day Commemoration 2021
Our 17th annual Veterans Day Commemoration will be held on the tree-shaded grounds of Dodona Manor on November 11 at 10:30 a.m.… and you’re invited! We are the proud hosts of the community collaboration among the Marshall Center, the Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County. Our event is focused on honoring military veterans for their service to our nation, with participation from our local VFW chapter, the Marine Corps League of Loudoun County, Mayor Kelly Burke and Chair Phyllis Randall.

We are thrilled to welcome Lieutenant General Bruce Crawford (U.S. Army, Ret.) as our keynote speaker. We’re also excited to host Veterans Moving Forward, a Dulles-based nonprofit organization specializing in providing service dogs and canine therapy services to veterans with physical and/or mental health challenges. Mark your calendars for this free event!
Holidays and History:
The Marshall Plan Tree Walk 2021
The tradition continues! Our Marshall Plan Tree Walk returns for a second year to the grounds of Dodona Manor, beginning with an evening tree lighting ceremony on December 4. This unique event combines the magic of the holidays with recognition of the 17 Marshall Plan countries. Seventeen trees, one for each country that participated in the Marshall Plan, will be decorated along the brick walk by the house for visitors to view and enjoy through the holiday season. Be sure to vote for your favorite tree when you visit!
