Literacy Tutor Trainings Are Back!
Have you been looking for some way to help your fellow Methuen citizens? If you have a desire to help, a high school diploma, and a fluency in English you can become a tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of Methuen!

What is Literacy Volunteers of Methuen exactly? It's a program where we partner with the Methuen Adult Learning Center and Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts to provide free, private, flexible, and individualized one on one instruction to adults who would like to gain proficiency in English.

To become a tutor, you need to attend one of our information sessions (dates below) and all six training sessions (which will happen this year on Wednesdays from September 1st through October 6th), and then commit to a minimum of nine months of two hours of tutoring per week.

Our three upcoming information sessions will be:

Monday, August 23rd from 7-8pm
Tuesday, August 24th from 6-7pm ONLINE
Email LItVolMeth@gmail.com for Link
Wednesday, August 25th from 7-8pm
Thursday, August 26th from 10-11am

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Grace at 978-686-4080x32 or LitVolMeth@gmail.com
Porch Chats
Aug 11th & Sept 8th at 10:30 AM

Did you miss our first few Porch Chats? That's okay, we have two more to go!

If you're looking for a little friendly conversation? If you want to share something great you’ve read with others? Or if you just want to just sit on our front porch for a spell and have a listen? Stop by the Nevins Library for our new Porch Chats, taking place on our front porch this summer. (Which can easily be accessed through the library too).

A librarian or two will chat up some great new books we have on the shelf to get the conversation going. But where the conversation ends is up to you! This will be fun and very casual, and who knows where it might lead?
Book Sale Returns in September

The Friends of the Library have been collecting TONS of new books and bestsellers and more from generous donors.

And wow, do we have a great selection for you to choose from this September as our Book Sale returns!

The Sale will take place on the Weekend of September 25th – 27th, so mark your calendar so you don’t miss the chance to stock up your bookshelves at bargain prices!

We are accepting donations for the Book Sale throughout August, so now is the time to drop your books off on a cart near the Library’s Main Desk.

Watch for our ad in next month’s Methuen Life for more details.
Friends of the Library News

The Friends of the Nevins Library still are "Dining Around Methuen." We ate out at the Texas Roadhouse in July and had a great time! We hope to visit new restaurants, or revisit some of our favorite places in the fall. Stay tuned for more Friends Dine-Around Methuen dates.

The Friends of the Nevins Library is a major sponsor for the summer programs for all ages at the Library. This summer the group has sponsored Children’s programs, both in-person and virtual, as well as programs for Teens, and the Library’s annual Adult Summer Reading Raffle.

The proceeds from the Friends’ fundraisers the Friends make the Nevins your “go-to place” for fun and learning all year long!

Consider joining the Friends of the Library and do your part to help our Library keep rockin’. To become a friend, print a membership form from the Friends of the Library Page on the Library website.
Just for Teens!
Summer Programs!
Great Programs & A Fun Redesign!

Have you seen the Teen Section’s new makeover? Come lounge on one of our new sofas or relax in one of our new chairs while reading a great new teen book or graphic novel!

Or, if you’re looking to do something instead of read something, we have two remaining teen summer programs coming up.

On August 2nd you’ll be able to learn how to decorate a picture frame with sea shells. Then, you can show off pictures of your summer vacation or any fun memories! The take-and-make kits will be available while supplies last at the circulation desk, and, the video showing how to make the frame will be available on the Nevins YouTube channel from the 2nd on.

On August 9th at 3:30pm join us in person for Franken-Stuff (Ages 12-18)! As the title implies, we’ll create new (stuffed) creatures out of pieces of old ones! What kind of monstrous being will you create? Participants can bring any of their own old stuffed animals that they don’t mind taking apart. And there will be some stuffed animals available on a first-come first-serve basis too.

On a slightly less fun note, be sure to check out the bottom of our teen summer program page (link to it under the picture of the ship). We have the Methuen Public Schools required reading lists for all grades there.
What's Happening in Children's?
People of the First Light: A Presentation by Annawon Weeden!
Before the fun stuff we’d like to ask a favor of parents of preschoolers: would you mind taking a short survey to help us think about what programs we could offer for your little ones in the fall? Your insights would be so appreciated – just go here, and thanks very much for your input! (It should be up through the end of the week).

It has been wonderful to see so many patrons back in the Children’s Department, enjoying our programs, books, and company this summer! We have more special events coming in August, the highlight being a presentation by Native American storyteller and historian Annawon Weeden on August 10th; participants will see the construction of a shelter, listen to some traditional storytelling, play a game, and make a cornhusk action figure. Registration is required, so sign up soon!

Of course we have lots of other programs going on, as well: Books & Bubbles, Story & Craft, Bilingual Storytime, Yoga for Kids, Science Quest, Family Storytime, and Little Bookworms at the Nevins Farm MSPCA. On Saturdays, when the library is closed, we’ll post a program for kids at 9 a.m. on Facebook – stories, cooking, science – just check out the Children’s Calendar on the library website for further info on live and taped programs and to register for those that interest you. Plus, we’ll have one last Pop-Up Library at Mann Orchards on August 11 (11a.m.-1p.m.)! Come see us there!

August also continues our Bead Bonanza incentive – we offer paper and online logs to track children’s summer reading and math, we have a wonderful selection of Summer Reading books, and kids can earn snazzy beads for their summer learning and for participating in Children’s Department programs and contests!

Keep an eye on the Children’s Department calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming programs and special events – there’s so much fun in store!

Happy August, and Happy Reading!
