Seeking Literacy/ESOL Tutors

Do you have some time to give back to your community and help your neighbor? Consider becoming a Tutor in our Literacy Volunteers of Methuen program. Come learn more about how you can help an adult who wants to improve their English language skills at one of our upcoming orientation sessions! No special skills or teaching background is required, only a High School diploma, a few hours a week, and a sincere interest in helping other people. Literacy Volunteers of Methuen, an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, provides free, confidential, student-centered one-on-one tutoring, primarily to ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students from Methuen and the surrounding area.  Tutors are trained twice a year, in the fall and spring, and after their training, they are matched with a student that they will meet at the tutor's and student's mutual convenience, typically for two hours a week for at least nine months or longer.
Before beginning training, prospective tutors are asked to attend a one-hour orientation session to make sure that this is the right volunteer activity for them. It is a rewarding experience for a dedicated community-minded person.

Upcoming orientations are:

Tuesday September 11th at 7pm
Thursday, September 13 at 10am
Saturday, September 15 at 10am

Upon completion of the orientation, tutor volunteers are required to take a six week training workshop to prepare them to work with thier adult students.  This training will begin on September 19 in the evening  from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

For more information about the program and to sign up for an orientation please contact Kathleen Kenny, Literacy Coordinator at 978 686-4080x32

Book Chatters for grades 4-6 - October 2 @ 7pm

We are kicking off a new "Who Was" book club for kids in 2nd to 4th grade, using the popular Who Was biography series. This club will meet once a month, and participants will use technology, crafts, and their imagination to share what they learned from that month's book. For our first meeting, on October 1st at 4 pm, we will read Who was Milton Hershey and learn about how chocolate is made and taste test different types of chocolate!

For readers in grades 4 to 6, our Book Chatters book club will have its first monthly meeting on October 2nd at 7pm. Come share your favorite summer reads and give input on books that you are interested in reading for future meetings. Newcomers are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
