Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In December, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:

  • Continued noise barrier construction between Reston Avenue and Utterback Store Road.
  • Storm sewer installation continued between Reston Avenue and Reston Parkway, and commenced between Utterback Store Road and Baron Cameron Avenue.
  • Placed cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt between Reston Parkway and Utterback Store Road. 
  • Reconstructed and reopened the intersection of Route 7 and Great Passage Boulevard.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way:

  • Placed asphalt and shifted traffic to Stage 3A between Baron Cameron Avenue and Colvin Forest Drive. 
  • Commenced excavation for the south end of the pedestrian tunnel under Route 7 in Colvin Run Mill Park.
  • Completed construction of temporary pavement for traffic shift on Carpers Farm Way.


  • Stage 2 construction pending right-of-way acquisition.


  • Continued earth-moving activities between Difficult Run and Faulkner Drive.
  • Continued construction of the new channel for Colvin Run Stream.


  • Continued storm sewer installation for Route 7 westbound lanes between Faulkner Drive and Trotting Horse Lane.  
  • Began relocating the water main between Beulah Road and Towlston Road.  
  • Completed asphalt placement and shifted traffic along westbound Route 7 between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.

Design work continues for lighting and landscaping. Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Upcoming Work
Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the winter months, and additional traffic changes will occur. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.

Work in the Colvin Run/Difficult Run area is ongoing, and public access to the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail will be maintained.
