CDC and OMH Partner to Launch the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index

In July, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). This tool can be leveraged to support the identification of racial and ethnic minority communities at greatest risk for disproportionate impact and adverse outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minority Health SVI is an extension of the CDC SVI that combines the 15 social factors included in the original CDC SVI with additional factors known to be associated with COVID-19 outcomes. The factors were developed using five-year estimates of demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS), and are organized into six themes:

Socioeconomic Status
Household Composition and Disability
Minority Status and Language
Housing Type and Transportation
Health Care Infrastructure
Medical Vulnerability

NIH will do this by investing efficiently and effectively in a wide range of basic, translational, clinical, and applied research, while at the same time supporting the workforce and infrastructure required for a sustainable research enterprise. As outlined in this Strategic Plan, this approach will enable NIH to build a solid foundation of fundamental knowledge about living systems that will serve to accelerate research aimed at addressing our most pressing health needs.

Live at the Virtual Barbershop:
Supporting Black Students in the Classroom

The barbershop is the one of the few safe places where Black men feel very comfortable in having candid conversations on just about anything. All over America, the barbershop continues to serve as a second home and place of refuge, healing, and compassion for Black men. This virtual space will feature several Black male executives from around the country, sharing their experiences and recommendations for advancing anti-racist leadership and championing equity-focused action in human services organizations. Just like in any barbershop, anyone is welcome to drop in at any time based on their availability and interest.
