Even though the first official day of summer isn't until June 20th, we're already having hot weather in Georgia. This is a good time to remind ourselves how deadly keeping your dog unattended in your car can be, even for a few minutes.

If you see a dog locked in a hot car, what can you do? There are only 15 states with "Good Samaritan" laws that permit a person to break into someone's car to rescue a pet - Georgia is NOT one of them.

A new state law in Georgia effective July 2019 does provide immunity to law enforcement who damage cars when rescuing people or pets, so in Georgia, call 911 for assistance.

While waiting for help, take down the car's make, model and tag number and if there are businesses nearby, notify management to make a store-wide announcement to try to locate the owner.

Ask your dog to sit and stay. Slowly start lowering the food bowl to your knee level.

If your dog jumps up towards the bowl, raise the bowl up and try again until you succeed.

Give your dog a piece of kibble and try again, this time lowering the bowl a little further.

Repeat until you can get the food bowl all the way down to the floor. Release the dog to eat!

Over the next few days, raise your expectations and see if you can get your dog to wait while you lower the food bowl all the way to the floor.

When asking clients what they hope to get out of a group obedience class, the most common response is to socialize their dog.

Is enrolling your dog in a group class for socialization purposes a good idea? The answer, of course, is "it depends."
