May Art Exhibit
Origami: The Art of Paper Folding
by Yuri
JEL is pleased to host Yuri's exhibit, "Origami: The Art of Paper Folding."
Artist statement:
"Origami has become more than a hobby to me, it has become my passion. It’s ironic that I grew up in Japan but never had an interest in Origami until now. After my husband Nick and I retired from our business in Southbridge, I finally had time for a creative hobby. When I saw my daughter Katie folding something she saw online, I became very interested. As I became more adept at Origami, my daughter Anna helped me to use social media in order to share my pieces and projects.
Gradually I became interested in more difficult and technical fold styles. The power of social media has opened a world of creators and enthusiasts to me from all over the world, with one of the most active communities right here in Massachusetts at MIT.
These displays are a small sampling of what origami can do. It is challenging both mentally and physically and a lot of fun.
Like other folders around the world, I hope to spark an interest in this great art form."

New England Horror Writers
"Wicked Sick"
Thursday, May 18th
6:30 - 7:30 pm
JEL is pleased to host the New England Horror Writers for a presentation on the book: "Wicked Sick: Beneath the Plague Mask is the Face in the Mirror."
In this terrifying and provocative collection, sixteen writers rage against the devastating psychological impact of illness. A retiree’s decline drives him to a shocking act and a stubborn sculptor’s perception is shattered by her hometown blight. A grief-stricken parent embraces an abhorrent sacrifice, a model son is compelled to seek revenge, and a busy housewife must reconcile that her tasks are suddenly insurmountable. Mysterious creatures atrophy a man’s dreams as well as his muscles, an abandoned vampire must rebuke her cravings, and a pyromaniac’s world burns when his demons come calling.
These stories and poems—fraught with regret, anxiety, and grief—prove that sick damages so much more than just our fragile shells.
Edited by Kristi Petersen Schoonover & Scott T. Goudsward.
Foreword by Stephen Mark Rainey; cover by Mikio Murakami; layout by Dan Keohane.

All About Poets and Potters
with Pied Potter Hamlin
Thursday, May 25th
6:00 - 7:30 pm
*Please note the earlier start time*
JEL is pleased to welcome Pied Potter Hamelin back for a pottery demonstration and presentation!
Writers have alluded to clay and the potter at work in numerous poems and stories throughout time. Massachusetts poets, Longfellow, Whitman, Thoreau, and Gibran celebrated the potter in their writings and reflected on the forming of clay as a metaphor for life in many ways. In this one-hour program, Mr. Hamelin demonstrates “throwing” at the pottery wheel while exploring verses and the historical connections of Massachusetts’ potters to these poets.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Southbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Small Mercies
by Dennis Lehane
"One night Mary Pat's teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn't come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. The two events seem unconnected. But Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her missing daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched--asking questions that bother Marty Butler, chieftain of the Irish mob, and the men who work for him, men who don't take kindly to any threat to their business" - Provided by publisher.
