September 19, 2021

Dear Cardinal Newman Families,

I hope you have enjoyed a restful weekend. We closed another strong week on Friday. Our teachers have been working extremely hard to make sure that all grades are updated. You should receive Progress Reports digitally tomorrow, Monday, September 20th.

Chaplaincy
As we close this month, Fr. Rhett Williams will be transitioning from his position as Chaplain at Cardinal Newman. He will remain at St. Thomas More, but has also taken on duties as Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Charleston. We are grateful for the time we have had with him and the countless hours he has dedicated to our spiritual growth. Due to his many gifts, he is now called to other roles.

Fr. William Frei has joined our community as Chaplain. He will, undoubtedly, be a wonderful presence and role model for our students, leading us in our sacramental experiences. Fr. Frei has already been here for two of our Wednesday Masses, allowing your sons and daughters get to know him. Let’s be sure to welcome him!

Coffee House
Students interested in sharing their talents in the performing arts are welcome to join us for this week’s Coffee House, the first Cardinal Newman has held in recent memory. It will be held this coming Thursday at 7:00 PM in the Performing Arts Center. All are welcome to perform or just to support their Cardinal brothers and sisters.

Spirit Week and Homecoming
On Monday, September 27th, we begin Spirit Week, which will culminate in Homecoming on October 1st. Students will have dress down days throughout the week. Please be sure to join us at Homecoming for the Tailgate at 6:30 PM followed by football against Ben Lippen. We look forward to seeing you there!

Parent Information Evening
On Monday, September 27th, at 6:30 PM, we will host a Parent Information Evening entitled Mental Health and Adolescents.  Ms. Taylor Hanlon, our school Social Worker, will offer the presentation. We will hold our evening in the Performing Arts Center. I hope you can join us.

Mass with the Bishop
The Most Reverend Bishop Robert Guglielmone will celebrate Mass for us on October 8th, a day prior to the Feast of St. John Henry Cardinal Newman. On that day we will also award the Bobbi Rossi Memorial Scholarship.

Attached you will find a listing of important events through October 9th. I hope you find it helpful.

I again want to highlight part of our Mission Statement, which is below. Please note the six areas in which we focus on student formation. We seek to offer our students significant formation in all these areas by their graduation.

“We challenge our students to embrace truth, pursue academic excellence, act with integrity, lead courageously, work for justice, and engage in generous service. We are a community where every student is known, the dignity of all is appreciated, and apparent and potential gifts are developed in mind, body, and spirit.”

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if I can be of help in any way.

Christs Peace,
Robert A. Loia
