Protecting Your Safety is Our Mission
Dear Friends,

The January 6 siege of our nation's Capitol has shocked the country and set off alarm bells.

I wish to reassure you all that the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office will protect and safeguard against civil unrest that threatens our safety.

This includes our historic City Hall, and all public buildings and resources. Most importantly we’re here to protect the people who work in these buildings as well as the residents of our City.

Our staff receives and monitors intelligence reports at the local, state, and national level. We collaborate with other agencies to ensure that we have all the information necessary to be prepared with any threats to our community.

We support each other’s operations by providing mutual aid during emergency responses. San Francisco Sheriff’s deputies train, assess and plan for every risk to protect your safety.

While we do not expect the current civil unrest to spread to San Francisco, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office stands ready for any event and will fulfill our mission to protect public safety.

Sheriff Appoints BART Commander Tanzanika Carter to SFSO Assistant Sheriff
Sheriff Miyamoto appointed Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Commander Tanzanika Carter to Assistant Sheriff, the third highest ranking position in the San Francisco Sheriff's Office. Assistant Sheriff Carter assumed her role effective January 2021.

Assistant Sheriff Carter brings extensive leadership and diverse work experience to the Sheriff's Office as a 24-year-law enforcement veteran. She recently served as BART's commander for the Contra Costa area. She has trained and served in multiple assignments including as Field Training Officer, Detective, Hostage Negotiator, Chaplain Coordinator, Watch Commander and Zone Commander.

"Assistant Sheriff Carter is skilled on many levels," said Sheriff Miyamoto. "She brings an outsider's perspective to our office and will help us identify gaps in our training and experience. The new Assistant Sheriff will play a key role as the Sheriff's Office works to strengthen our relationships with the communities we serve."

SFSO Serves Community During Holidays

Sheriff’s deputies joined USF’s McCarthy Center, Guardsmen volunteers, and multiple city agencies to deliver over 200 Christmas trees to families in need across San Francisco.

“You can’t help but smile when you see a holiday tree,” said Sheriff Miyamoto. “We get to share joy and happiness with hundreds of families who gave us big smiles when they saw their trees.”
Santa’s helpers AKA San Francisco Sheriff's Deputies and SF Junior Deputy Program volunteers (pictured below) wrapped gifts and delivered backpacks, books, Legos, dolls and more this past week to several community organizations including Nihonmachi Little Friends, SF Housing Development Corp, and the Healing Circle for Soul Support Group, which helps those hurting from violence.
Maggie Rivera and Community Works West (CWW) handed out backpacks with school and personal hygiene supplies to support our transitional aged youth (TAY) during the holiday season.

Thank you CWW, San Francisco Sheriff's Office staff, and Angela Wilson of the Women's Resource Center for your generosity and compassion.
