RECAP | Plainfield Fire Department Swearing In Ceremony
On Friday, December 10, 2021, the City of Plainfield welcomed four (4) new firefighters to Plainfield's Fire Department. Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, joined by Fire Director Kenneth Childress, officiated the swearing-in ceremony and welcomed cadets Moises Sanchez, J’Quan Chavis, Michael Morgan, and Marques Hudson to the force. Council Vice President Barry Goode and Fire Captain Walter Thompson were also in attendance.

As a young firefighter, you walk into an emergency knowing the rules, but it isn't until you've gained a few years of experience that you learn what to expect. The courage and the willingness that these four young men exhibit to place their lives on the line for their community is commendable and demonstrates the ultimate love for Plainfield.
Plainfield Police Department & the Housing Authority of Plainfield Collaborate on New Community Resource Center to Enhance Security and Comfort for Residents
On Saturday, December 11th, the Housing Authority of Plainfield and Plainfield Police Department celebrated a ribbon-cutting for the newly established Community Resource Center at the Joanne Hollis Gardens townhouse complex.

The vision behind this initiative was to establish a location where officers and the housing authority can engage and build meaningful relationships with Plainfield residents. The center will allow officers to work closely together with families and directly serve at-risk youth, battered women, and individuals seeking recovery from substance abuse.

December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month
December is Seasonal Depression Awareness month that commonly refers to Seasonal Affective Disorder or "SAD" for short. SAD is more than an experience of “winter blues.” Most commonly associated with fall and winter, SAD affects approximately 5% of the US population in any given year, according to the nonprofit organization Mental Health America—that’s over 16.4 million Americans. SAD is more commonly experienced by adults with links of genetic inheritance.

Although causation for SAD isn't 100% certain, there are three (3) main causes that are likely related:
  1. Distribution of the Circadian Rhythm, referring to our innate biological clock that regulates our sleeping cycle, which is caused by the decreased sun exposure during the winter.
  2. A decrease in serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a role in our moods.
  3. And an imbalance of Melatonin levels, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate our sleep.
