A Message From Erin

Erin Snip.PNG

Friends,

February is a beautiful month in our Central Valley. The almond and fruit trees are blooming, and we are seeing sunnier days and early glimpses of spring.

For families who are grieving, trusting that spring will come can be a welcome relief after the winter holidays and long, dark days.

At Jessica’s House we are especially glad to be celebrating our 10th birthday this April! We cannot wait to commemorate this occasion with our community as we reflect on the good work of Jessica’s House in the lives of families who are grieving.

We are also grateful to announce the launch of our new Hope after Accidental Overdose grief support group. Deaths from drug overdoses have surged in Stanislaus County and our country. In 2021, more than 100,000 people died in the U.S. from drug overdoses in just one year.

Please join us as we celebrate being here for children and families for 10 years. We couldn’t have done this without the generous support of our community, donors and volunteers.

With appreciation for all you do,

Erin Nelson

Executive Director

Jacob and Katie Long were looking forward to welcoming the newest member of their family, Baby Veda, in June of 2020. Katie had a textbook pregnancy, so when she stopped feeling Veda move three days after her 37-week appointment, she was concerned.

When Katie visited her doctor, she learned the heart-breaking news that baby Veda had died. After Katie delivered Veda, she and Jacob spent two solemn, yet comforting days with their baby girl as the hospital provided an infant cooling bed near Katie.

When Katie became pregnant again, sadly this baby died at 16 weeks gestation. “Now we are traveling a road we never thought we would find ourselves on,” shared Katie.

Following the painful loss of two babies, the Longs felt alone, even though they were surrounded by a strong support system.

When the Long family heard about Jessica’s House, they wanted their children, Reagan and Theodore, to join group. Katie explained, “It was a safe place where they could freely talk about their sister with other children.”

Katie and Jacob were surprised to learn there was support at Jessica’s House for the adults in the family as well.

“At first we were more concerned about our kids than ourselves, but we were glad to find a group for us, too,” said Katie. She and Jacob found relief as they met with other parents who experienced a similar loss and understood the heart-wrenching pain of losing a baby. Katie explained, “They know how it feels to bury their child.”

Jacob said he wants others to know how Jessica’s House helped them, “Jessica’s House is a place where you feel supported and validated.”

In the midst of their deepest pain, the Long family found hope and healing at Jessica’s House.

“Jessica’s House helps us not feel alone.”

“The entire place feels like it is built for comfort.”

“Jessica’s house has allowed me to express my feelings and emotions without judgement or expectations of me having to ‘move on.’ It has helped me open up and realize that it’s okay not to be okay.”

“My grief has been lifted, and I know I can speak from my heart of what I am feeling. I have received so many coping tools, which I have been able to pass onto family and friends.”

“Jessica's House is a safe and comfortable place to express our grief.”

“It’s nice to talk to someone who has experienced the same loss you have.”
