Worship & Music

Worship Online or In Person
Beginning the first Sunday in June, our choir will return as will congregational singing...we're glad to be together and we will continue wearing masks at this time, so please remember to bring yours (or pick one up as you check in for worship). Our two services (at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.) will continue throughout the summer months. The first and third Sundays of the month we’ll celebrate communion (in one kind, bread only). Also in June, an abbreviated coffee hour (in the Parish Hall) will occur at 9:00 a.m. with “restaurant” rules…please keep your mask on unless you are eating or drinking. Additionally, the 10:00 a.m. service will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel or at our website.
Note: please sit in the pews with cushions and do not move the cushions since they are specifically placed for social distancing in our sanctuary. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe in our church community!

Parish Life
The Banns of Marriage
I publish the Banns of Marriage between Anne Cole Walker of Henrico, Virginia and Nicholas Leland Stubbe of Henrico, Virginia. If any of you know just cause why they may not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it. This is the second time of asking.
Rev. Duane Nettles, Rector

Good News
Remember our former Episcopal Campus Ministry leader Julia Terhune? She’s engaged to be married! Julia’s fiancé, Alan Lloyd, is an electrical engineer in the U.S. Air Force and she will be joining him after their wedding in the summer of 2022. You can email Julia your congratulations. Remember to send your good news to communications@ghtc.org so we can share it with the parish!

Graduates Honored June 13
If you have a high school or college graduate in 2021, be sure to email the Rev. Duane Nettles by June 1.
The Faithful Departed – Langhorne Eyster “Lang” Talley
May the faithful departed, through the mercies of God, rest in peace and rise in glory. Your prayers are requested for Lang Talley as she enters the nearer presence of our Lord. Please keep her family and friends in your prayers. Lang’s funeral is a family only graveside service; condolences can be sent to the church and we will forward them to the family.
Vestry Highlights

Your GHTC Vestry has been busy; as of the May meeting (held 5/18):

  • We can report that the Church’s finances are on target almost six months into the year. In addition, we have received several new pledges since February. Our thanks to all of you for your continued support.

  • We created a Seminarian Support Fund as a new separate line item in the Outreach budget to provide financial support for our current and future seminarians. This money can also be used to support other Virginia seminarians in years when we do not have someone from our parish in training.

  • We had our first “mini-retreat” based on Becoming a Blessed Church: Forming a Church of Spiritual Purpose, Presence, and Power by N. Graham Standish. These retreats are designed to help the Vestry discern our parish’s values and mission as we move forward with our new Rector.

Beware of Phishing Emails
It doesn’t take long to get spoofed…be sure you don’t respond to emails or links from people with email addresses like “emergency task” or unknown gmail accounts pretending to be clergy. Email from the church ends in “ghtc.org” behind the sender’s name.
Christian Formation

Men’s Study Group Begins June 2
Our own James Taylor will be leading an every other week discussion group on Wednesday mornings. Gather with men of the parish at 9:00 a.m. in Monroe Park on June 2, June 16 and June 30…topics will include music, sports and books. Contact Jim for more information at (804) 615-9770.

Book Discussion Small Group
There is currently a small group meeting to discuss the first six chapters of the book Me and White Supremacy, A Study to Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Better Ancestor by Layla F. Saad. The group will meet by Zoom each Wednesday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. through June 16. If you are interested in joining this group, or finding out more about the book, please contact Mary Ann BlankenshipBeth McClelland, or Bob Hetherington.

Faith & Arts Group Summer Schedule
Remember the Sunday afternoon Faith and Arts discussion group is changing to a monthly schedule during the warmer weather—mark your calendar for June 27 and July 25 to join the Zoom sessions. Participants discuss visual arts, music, poetry and more for 45-60 minutes with a volunteer leader. Questions? Contact Kathleen Thomas to learn more.
Outreach
Donate Sports Beverages
This Sunday (May 30) throughout the month of June please bring individual size bottles of Gatorade, Powerade, or your favorite sports drink for the Red Door Ministry. These thirst quenchers will help our community continue to fight COVID-19 and prevent dehydration and heat-related illness in the summer months. You can add your bottles to the Service Ministry box in the front of the sanctuary.

Red Door Wish List
During the last week of each month the Red Door Ministry is publishing a list of requested items...click here to view what's needed now. Contact Mother Kim for more information.
