Getting Out The Vote!
November 2020 Newsletter
Every Vote Counts.
Voting is a right in a democracy. It offers people the means to elect representatives and to influence policy to best meet their needs, and those of their families and communities.

Historically, the voting-age turnout (those who are age 18 and older and voted) in North Dakota has exceeded the national average. Presidential elections typically have higher voter turnout than mid-term elections. Most recently, however, the mid-term election of 2018 set record-breaking turnout for a congressional election, with a 10-percentage point increase from the last mid-term election in 2014.

As citizens are voting this year in a midst of a global pandemic, we prepared a snapshot of who voted in North Dakota in the past presidential election. Visit North Dakota Compass after the election to see who voted in North Dakota in these unprecedented times.

Make Your Voice Heard.
North Dakota was one of the first states to implement contact tracing for COVID-19. Through contact tracing, health departments are able to identify individuals who have been exposed to an infectious disease and provide them with the proper guidance on testing and treatments available. Contact tracing can help slow the spread of the disease and prevent outbreaks from occurring.

In this article, Madison Marion, Public Health student in the Master of Public Health program at North Dakota State University and graduate research assistant with the Center for Social Research at NDSU, describes her experience as a student case worker of Covid-19. This experience provided her the opportunity not only to gain experience in her chosen field, but also to be a source of guidance to individuals in this difficult time and to provide some help to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Know The Impact.
In addition to its impact on public health, the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has severe impact on the economy. According to the most recent data collection of the U.S. Census Bureau Small Business Pulse Survey, 34 percent of North Dakota small businesses reported large negative effects on their business due to the pandemic. Information about impacts of the pandemic on small businesses can help policymakers and service organizations better design and target programs to help small businesses affected by the coronavirus.
Count The Votes.
The 2018 voting-age turnout in North Dakota was higher than the previous two mid-term elections in 2010 and 2014. The voting-age turnout rate surpassed 60 percent in 34 counties and was more than 70 percent in six counties.
