Greetings from home

We hope that you and your loved ones are well and safe.

When the November newsletter was sent, there had been 18 reported cases of coronavirus in Nunavut. Now, just about a month later, there have been 247 cases. By far the most serious outbreak is in Arviat, which has had 205 cases. Of these, 157 have recovered. There are about 50 active cases in Arviat, and community spread appears to be continuing. The other 42 cases in Nunavut were in Whale Cove (21), Rankin Inlet (19) and Sanikiluaq (2). All of these cases have recovered, and no new cases have appeared in those communities for the last week or more.

We wish you and your family a safe, socially distanced holiday season, and we look forward to a new, improved 2021.

A Henry bear for the holidays
Henry Evaluardjuk was born in 1923, and lived a traditional life on the land for many years. In 1959, he settled in Iqaluit, and he became known for his dynamic, realistic carvings of bears.
Henry's bears have well defined musculature, a product of Henry's life on the land as a hunter. Either they are palpably in motion, or they are clearly ready to spring into action. This bear is plump and well fed, prepared for hibernation.
Henry's attention to detail can be seen in the sensitive face of the bear. In another medium, Henry's sketches of birds (below) show his fascination with creatures in motion.
About
Alaska on Madison

In keeping with our self-description as a virtual gallery run by collectors for collectors, we offer a limited number of pieces. Every piece is one that we would be happy to have in our personal collection, and the description of each piece explains why.

We are happy to assist you with inquiries, with searches for particular pieces or artists, with organizing your collections and with buying or selling at auction. Our Inuit artist search tool is available on our website, and we would be delighted to help you use it. If you prefer to puzzle things out for yourself, Deciphering Inuktitut Signatures will help you to identify artists.

We are always pleased to answer questions or just chat. You can contact us by email or by phone at (908) 487-5757.

Our very best wishes to you all.
