A Drive through Route 66 It is said that an army travels on its stomach. So does a road trip. Even if the lofty purpose is to drive the entire Route 66. Why do that? In the case of Kathryn Murdock, it was to celebrate her ninetieth birthday and to get glimpses into her mother and aunt’s journey the same road. Kathryn will share stories and photos from her recent trip including all the downright ludicrous sights along the way; giant milk bottles, leaning towers, and wigwam motels. And back to the stomach part – she will share stories of the road food that guided some of the drive, including some strange, and a few outstanding meals. Come prepared for laughs and to share your own stories along the way. Tuesday, August 16th at 11:00AM.
Let's all go to the movies! We'll provide the popcorn and the film, you just need to be entertained. Starting in August, we will be showing a monthly movie on our big screen in the dining room. This month, join us to watch A princess Bride on Tuesday, August 16th at 4:00PM.

A fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love. He must find her after a long separation and save her. They must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other. Based on the William Goldman novel "The Princess Bride" which earned its own loyal audience. Starring: Cary Elwes; Mandy Patinkin; Chris Sarandon; Christopher Guest; Wallace Shawn; André the Giant; Fred Savage; Robin Wright.

Un promenade in Paris NEW!
It can be hard to get to Paris, so we are bringing Paris to the senior center! For the first time, we will have a LIVE walking tour with guide in Paris. Our guide will answer questions and take us for an evening stroll (10:00AM for us!) through Le Marais district. Le Marais is one of the oldest and most cosmopolitan districts in the French capital city, which used to be a swampy area drained by Christian congregations and was then an aristocratic neighborhood in the late Middle Ages. The King of France lived there once at what became afterward the Place des Vosges, where many noble private mansions were built in the 17th century across. Today, Le Marais is a must-see place in Paris, full of trendy boutiques, bakeries, cafés, gastronomic restaurants, museums, art galleries, ravishing gardens, magnificent historical monuments, etc. We will join as a group from the Senior Coastsiders Media Room where we will have coffee and crepes, or you can participate from your own home. Tour is $10.00 per person. Join us on Friday, August, 26 at 10:00AM! Registration/payment required in advance. Please come by the Senior Coastsiders office to hold your spot - Limit 15 participants.

NEW Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line - 988 Similar to 911, this new, simplified tool will connect those in need with representatives specifically trained in the management of suicide risk and other mental health crises. One of the goals of the new number is to reduce the use of 911 for suicide and mental health crises, because calling 911 in such situations too often results in inadequate or inappropriate intervention by the police or unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration. This lifeline is critical for older adults and those living with a disability because such individuals are at greater risk for mental health crises and suicide. If you are struggling with a mental health emergency, call 988.
Preview Night at the Coastal Rep Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. Inspired by the classic comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical also diverts a bit from more traditional versions of the legend. Instead, Spamalot features shenanigans including a line of beautiful dancing girls, flatulent Frenchmen, and killer rabbits. Outside, there is plague with a 50% chance of pestilence and famine.

Throughout the show, Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. Besides the rabbits and farting Frenchman, they meet such characters as the Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight, and the Knights who say Ni. Preview night for seniors on Thursday, August 4th at 8:00PM. Proof of vaccination and masks are required.

Supporting Senior Coastsiders
We are grateful for the “out of the box” gifts we receive from time to time. For example, when members of our community have a birthday or celebrate a special occasion they sometimes suggest to their friends and family that gifts be given to Senior Coastsiders in their honor. This is such a lovely gesture, and we are extremely thankful. Although our ability to receive donations of goods is limited now that we no longer operate the Thrift Store, we have been fortunate to receive several in-kind gifts such as farm produce, meals, and artwork. We gratefully accept all in-kind gifts that we can use. Occasionally people sign up to volunteer on special projects as a group. The gift of their time and enthusiasm is much appreciated. These are examples of how the generosity of you, our donors, helps us carry out our mission of promoting successful aging for older adults on the Coast.
Just for Fun!

A Note from the Executive Director, Sandi Winter
I recently received a surprise package at my office and on opening it found a book sent to me by one of our long time and generous supporters, Cindy Labuda. Cindy is passionate about enhancing the quality of life of older adults. The book she sent me is called “Breaking the Age Code” and is written by Becca Levy who is a Professor at Yale University[1]. Dr Levy conducts research about age beliefs which she defines as mental maps of how we expect older people to behave based on age.

Dr Levy has demonstrated through numerous scientifically rigorous studies that beliefs about aging affect psychological, behavioral, and biological health. The psychological mechanism includes the feeling that life is worth living – that the perceived benefits of life outweigh the perceived hardships. The behavioral dimension is about how people approach their health care. People with negative age beliefs are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors like being physically active and taking their medications because they believe that debilitation in later life is inevitable. The biological pathway involves C-reactive protein which is found in blood plasma and rises in reaction to stress. Dr Levy found that positive age beliefs predict lower C-reactive protein and are associated with an increased ability to resist and cope with stress at a biological level, which impacts longevity.

The cumulative results of Dr Levy’s studies indicate that people with more positive views of aging live longer than those with more negative views. In one study she found that participants with the most positive views of aging were living, on average, 7 ½ years longer (!) than those with the most negative views. Aging beliefs determined life spans above and beyond the influence of gender, race, socioeconomic status, age, loneliness, and health. Positive age beliefs conferred even better survival advantage than low cholesterol or low blood pressure which both added 4 extra years of life, low body mass index which added 1 extra year of life or avoiding smoking which added 3 extra years of life.

Given the importance of our age beliefs, what can each of us do to shift our thinking from an age-declining mindset to an age-thriving one? Dr Levy suggests the ABC method – increasing Awareness, placing Blame where blame is due, and Challenging negative age beliefs.

  • Increase Awareness – Write down 5 words or phrases that come to mind when you think of older people. Are they mostly positive? Or mostly negative? Monitor your age beliefs and check for negative stereotypes. Build up a diverse portfolio of positive images by thinking of people - in your life or from the world at large - who provide a positive model of aging.
  • Place Blame Where It Belongs – Understand that health and memory problems can be the result, at least in part, of the negative age beliefs we acquire from society. For example, have you ever used the term “senior moment” when you’ve misplaced your keys or forgotten someone else’s name? Temporary memory loss happens throughout the life course not only as we get older. It can be heightened by emotional states such as feeling rushed, stressed, or distracted.  We have a natural tendency to blame people rather than their situation when something goes wrong.
  • Challenge negative age beliefs – Provide accurate information to counter negative age beliefs. For example, “You can’t teach on old dog new tricks” belies the fact that our brains grow new neurons in response to challenges throughout our lives. Take my dad for example - he is a fluent Xhosa speaker (the Bantu language in which about 10% of the vocabulary items contains a click) – a language he taught himself in his mid-seventies!

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Do not grow old, no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like curious children before the great mystery into which we were born.”

Take care and build your positive age beliefs!
Sandi

COVID
New cases of Covid-19 are up and San Mateo County is currently in the red zone (highest level).

What can you do?
  • Even though there are no mask mandates in place, as of this writing, masks are still considered the best way to prevent contracting Covid-19.
  • Getting vaccinated, including all boosters, remains the best way to minimize symptoms if you do contract Covid-19.
  • If you feel ill or are exposed to someone who has Covid-19, be sure to get tested. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, contact your doctor right away to ask about testing and if you qualify for COVID-19 treatments. If you don’t hear back from your doctor or don’t have one, visit a TestToTreat location for rapid testing and COVID19 treatments (if you are eligible) by going to: https://bit.ly/TestToTreatCOVID19. A Quick Covid Q&A

What is Omicron subvariant BA.5?
  • It is the latest strain of the Covid-19 virus. It is also, to date, the most contagious version. It is more easily spread than other strains because it evades immunity from past COVID-19 infection and vaccination. That means even if you were infected with delta or omicron BA.1, you can still get BA.5. Your previous immunity does not protect you from the latest strain.
Does the BA.5 variant cause more severe illness?
  • Omicron BA.5 is more likely to cause less severe illness compared to other variants. The majority of breakthrough infections (people who have been vaccinated or previously had COVID) are not resulting in severe illness. Given how infectious BA.5 is, it’s important for everyone to take all precautions, including getting vaccinated and wearing a well-fitted face mask (N95 or KN95, if possible).
What can I do to protect myself and my family?
  • Be sure you are updated on all COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. There is abundant evidence that being vaccinated and getting all COVID-19 boosters helps protect you against severe disease.
  • Wear a well-fitted face covering, such as an N95 or KN95, when you are indoors and not able to socially distance from people outside your household. It's especially important for people who are at high risk for developing severe disease.
