St. Vincent de Paul

THANKSGIVING FOOD BOX PROGRAM 2020
An Annual Community Tradition for over 40 years

Every autumn, St. Vincent de Paul sponsors a Thanksgiving Food Box program. Families share the tradition of Thanksgiving by preparing food boxes and giving them to other families in need.

Donating to the Project
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, St. Vincent de Paul recognizes both the need to help families at this difficult time and that not everyone is comfortable shopping to fill a box. This year, you have 2 options: Donate Food or Contribute Financially
Donating Food
  • Register to donate a box at:
  • Complete the form, Print the shopping list
  • Boxes & food lists will be distributed Nov. 7 & 8 and Nov. 14 & 15 in the church courtyard
  • Fill your box and tape it closed
  • Drop your box off in the pantry parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 21, 4 – 7, or Sunday, Nov. 22 by 1:30pm
Contributing Financially
  • This year, SVdP will shop for you
  • You can contribute at Holy Apostles or online at:
  • Make checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul, designate Thanksgiving
  • A food box will be delivered on your behalf

Volunteering
We recognize that many people in our parish look forward to contributing to this project by volunteering to help, both at the church collecting boxes and at the   Fairgrounds distributing boxes. We know that we couldn’t do this without your help! Due to Covid-19 this year, we are limiting the number of volunteers and asking that only people who have signed up volunteer to help. Here’s how to sign up:

Father Len’s Podcast

Fr Len and Holy Apostles parishioner Irish McMahon have created a new podcast. They describe it this way: “Two fun-loving and God-fearing Irishmen, a Catholic priest and his good friend, grapple with the big questions about faith, religion, and life.”

Check out the latest episode:

Father Len reveals that Halloween actually began as a Catholic Church holiday celebrating our mystical connection with all those who have died.
Highlights, Ideas, and Wisdom
  • Most of our holidays have Catholic origins. There are exceptions like Columbus Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving.
  • Halloween is the Catholic feast of All Saints who are in heaven and calling us to join them.
  • Father Len shares his love of giving people a “little bit of a scare.”
  • From the very beginning of Christianity it has been a custom to remember and celebrate the anniversary of the death of all Saints.
  • The idea for Halloween costumes began in France where they would dress up as Saints to celebrate their virtues.
  • Kids receiving treats on Halloween originated in England. Kids and poor people would go from house to house singing or “souling” and promising to go to church and pray for deceased family members of the household. In return, they’d receive either candied apples or “soul cakes.”
  • Father Len shares the story of “Stingy Jack” to explain how Jack-o’-lanterns became part of Halloween.
  • “Stations of the Sun” by Ronald Hutton
  • Halloween as we know it today is a combination of various European customs that we’ve mixed together here in the United States.
  • The modern world tries to unhinge the profound truth of the original celebration of Halloween and the feast of All Saints. That is our mystical connection with the dead who are trying to pull us into the great feast of love in heaven.
