Director’s Note

Dear Senior Center Friends,

We found ourselves with a large snow storm this week after quite a cold snap. Winter is definitely here and letting itself be known!

A few weeks ago I read a book called “The Year of Living Danishly. Uncovering the Secrets of the World’s Happiest Country” which is a memoir by British journalist Helen Russell. The book taught me a lot about Denmark in general, including unique traditions and of course, about the namesake pastry. What made me interested in this book was the idea that people in Denmark have a much worse winter than we do. Like other countries in the area, the northern latitude causes period of time where they get sunlight for only ten hours a week or about one and a half hours a day. How do they cope?

There use two tactics. The first is the concept of hygge, which doesn’t translate into English but could be considered coziness. The idea is they surround themselves with comforting things, including lots of light, blankets and warm drinks like a cup of tea. And when they can’t stay in their warm homes (they are known for incredibly efficient heating) the philosophy is a saying – “there is no bad weather, there is just bad clothes.” The idea is that as long as you are appropriately dressed, you can still get fresh air. They live their life and don’t let winter get the best of them.

We certainly have several more weeks of winter, but I hope you take some steps to increase your coziness and embrace this time we have for a little less hustle and bustle.

Stay Safe,

Carrie

The Snow-Storm

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driving o'er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farm-house at the garden's end.
The sled and traveller stopped, the courier's feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm.

Come see the north wind's masonry.
Out of an unseen quarry evermore
Furnished with tile, the fierce artificer
Curves his white bastions with projected roof
Round every windward stake, or tree, or door.
Speeding, the myriad-handed, his wild work
So fanciful, so savage, nought cares he
For number or proportion. Mockingly,
On coop or kennel he hangs Parian wreaths;
A swan-like form invests the hidden thorn;
Fills up the farmer's lane from wall to wall,
Maugre the farmer's sighs; and, at the gate,
A tapering turret overtops the work.
And when his hours are numbered, and the world
Is all his own, retiring, as he were not,
Leaves, when the sun appears, astonished Art
To mimic in slow structures, stone by stone,
Built in an age, the mad wind's night-work,
The frolic architecture of the snow.
