The CSL in a Nutshell
Updates from the Center for Service Learning
Message from the CSL Staff
As our community continues to be vaccinated and we slowly begin to open back up, we are excited about the opportunities to engage again more fully with our community partners. We recognize that for many this year has been beyond challenging and difficult, professionally and personally. We are so inspired by your adaptiveness and sustained commitment to our students and to our community. Your dedication is making the KU and Lawrence communities better and more equitable, which is a testament to your tireless advocacy, service, and action. As we move forward, we look forward to the opportunity to continue to partner with your organization. In the upcoming months, we will share additional updates for how we can begin to resume some of our prior efforts, as well as enhance and expand our initiatives and collaborative opportunities for impact through community and campus partnerships.

In service,

Center for Service Learning Staff
Jomella Watson-Thompson, PhD
Emily Rountree, PhD
Kate Kemper, MSEd

Organization Spotlight:
Just Food
Each year, we honor one community partner who has exemplified notable partnership with the University of Kansas and the CSL. The recipient of this award has made a significant contribution to KU’s culture of engagement through their partnership in promoting engaged learning, scholarship, and service.

Our 2021 winner Just Food has been critical in the fight for food security in our community. From continuing to support the Campus Cupboard to engaging in community-engaged research projects with faculty and participating in the KU Food for Jayhawks committee, Just Food has been a valuable partner to KU during this time.
§ecently, Just Food completed a major renovation to their pantry space. These updates have created a welcoming community space that is ADA accessible and better equipped to expand programming and on-on-one client support efforts.

Congratulations to Just Food and thank you for all of the meaningful work you’ve done this year!

Resource Spotlight:
Kansas Work Study Program
The Kansas Work-Study Program is a state-funded program that incentivizes hiring KU students who are Kansas residents. This program reimburses employers 50% of the students’ gross wages. Employers must be Kansas businesses who use Kansas banks, have a FEIN, and be willing to act as the students' employers. Students must be Kansas residents who qualify for in-state tuition, be enrolled in 6 credit hours for the spring and fall semesters (no summer courses necessary), have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, and have a FAFSA (federal financial aid application) on file. Students must demonstrate financial need to be determined program eligible, so their applications are also checked for financial aid eligibility through the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
