Volume 19 No1 Fall 2019
From the Music Director
Jon Noyes
Jon Noyes
Greetings and welcome to the 25 th anniversary season of the Fairfield County Children's Choir! To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the places we’ve been!” To that, I would add, “Oh, the music we have sung!” It has been an incredible journey. We have impacted (some have even said “changed”) the lives of thousands of young people. I can also say that we have changed the lives of the adults on our staff, our Board and even many in our audience.

We will celebrate this milestone in a number of ways. As we have done every five years, the theme for our Winter and Spring Concerts will be “The Best of the FCCC.” The conductors have chosen an exciting program for December 8, 2019 at 3:00 PM at The Klein. Selections will include One Voice, For Unto Us a Child is Born, Al Shlosha D’varim, Do You Hear What I Hear and Let It Snow .

For our annual Broadway Concert on February 8 at 7:00 PM at The Klein, we will be performing medleys from Oklahoma, Aladdin, Once and Les Miserables . This show includes our pit band and an incredible group of soloists!

On Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 8:00 PM, the FCCC will celebrate by presenting our annual Spring Concert at the world’s most famous concert hall, Carnegie Hall! For this program, we would like you to help us choose the program! We will be sending a survey with a list of music titles that includes many of the selections we have performed over the years (but omits all winter holiday music, all Broadway medleys, all music done in collaboration with bands, choirs & orchestras, and those pieces on this season's winter concert). Please watch for this survey and send us your favorites! See below for more news about this exciting project, including the full day’s schedule.

Our anniversary season will conclude in France and Belgium when our Chamber Singers perform at the World Choir Games from July 8 - 16, 2020! Info on the World Choir Games can be found here .

This edition of Quarternotes also includes a great deal of news from our choristers, alumni, staff and our performance schedule. Please join us!!!

From the President, Marina Philips
The Board of Directors of the FCCC

Welcome to our new season! We have an exceptionally exciting year ahead of us, as 2020 marks the 25 th anniversary of the FCCC’s founding. We have come a long way from Fairfield Warde Auditorium in 1995 to Carnegie Hall in 2020!! None of this would have happened without the dedication of all our choir directors, choristers, parents, accompanists and board members, both past and present, who have helped us grow to our present state.

This past summer, the FCCC Chamber Singers had a wonderful time touring Boston, and performed at several venues including King’s Chapel and The Tabernacle on Martha’s Vineyard. There was no shortage of non-musical events on the tour – among other activities, the choir walked nearly the entire Freedom Trail.

Like you, I am looking forward to our three main concerts this season: the Winter Concert and the Broadway Show (which, along with the accompanying Silent Auction, is our big fundraiser for the year), and our Spring concert, which will be held at Carnegie Hall. It is my dream to have every single one of our choristers on the stage at Carnegie Hall, for each chorister to have their family cheering them on from the audience, and for every seat in the hall to be filled.

While the FCCC’s mission is to “provide children the opportunity to participate in a musical experience which is challenging, rewarding and enjoyable,” this comes with some challenges and costs. The cost of performing at Carnegie Hall is over $60,000, which includes the rent for Stern Hall, to which must be added the cost of stagehands, piano tuners, ushers and the like. Our challenge is to cover these costs through ticket sales and donations, and though this may seem daunting, I am confident that we can pull it off with everyone’s support and generosity.

You can support the choir by buying (or helping to sell) tickets, making a donation, or helping to obtain donations. Donations can be made online through the FCCC’s website at SingFCCC.org , and can be designated for the Spring Concert at Carnegie Hall, or the General Fund, Bridges Through Music, Tuition Aid and Tour Aid. Just click on the Support – Donate button on our website to make a donation.

On a sadder note, Heidi Vanderwal now has a number of personal commitments that make it difficult for her to continue as our Executive Director, and she is therefore stepping down from her role. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Heidi for her hard work and dedication over this past year, and especially for the work she put into creating our new website. We will miss her enthusiasm, and wish her all the best. I would also like to thank Barbara Peck for stepping up to help while we search for a new Executive Director. During this transition period, I would like to call on anyone – parents, friends, alumni, sponsors or donors – who can help the choir in any way. We have a particular need for expertise in the use of social media and marketing – this is an important year for the FCCC, and we can use all the help we can get.

And last, but not least, in the words of Nick Page, and sung by the FCCC
( watch the video here ), let us treat our 25 th anniversary as an opportunity to “Explore, Dream, Discover.” Happy 25 th , FCCC!!!
FCCC at Carnegie Hall!
One of the most exciting events in our twenty-five-year history will take place on May 16, 2020 when the FCCC presents our annual Spring Concert at Carnegie Hall! The opportunity to perform on this famous stage is at the top of the “bucket list” of musicians around the world. The schedule is below. We will give our choristers the option of taking a bus from Fairfield Woods Middle School or meeting us at Carnegie Hall. We assume that some families will want to spend the day or the weekend in New York. Please keep in mind that travel in Manhattan is difficult, so be sure to arrive on time at 2:00 PM for the start of the rehearsal. We will also provide the option during the dinner break for choristers to go out to dinner with their families or remain in our backstage area to enjoy their own "brown bag dinner." We will be sending many more details, but this schedule will allow you to begin your planning .

12:00 PM    Bus departs Fairfield Woods Middle School
2:00 PM      Choristers, staff and chaperones arrive at the backstage door
2:30 PM      Each choir rehearses in their backstage room
3:00 PM      Stage rehearsal begins - in program order
4:30 PM       Alumni arrive at the backstage door
5:30 PM      Rehearsal concludes - dinner with parents or in backstage rooms with "brown bag dinner"
7:00 PM      Lobby/Bars/Coat check open
7:30 PM      House opens for seating - call time for all choristers
8:00 PM      Concert begins
10:15 PM   Concert concludes

Tickets
Tickets will be available for purchase to the general public through Carnegie Hall 90 days in advance of the concert. We will also offer premium group ticket packages in the “Parquet” orchestra section as well as the “First and Second Tier” private boxes. We will have these packages available very soon!

Conducting Promotion
At our Broadway Concert & Auction on February 8, 2020, will we offer the opportunity to conduct one song on stage at the Carnegie Hall performance. This will be open to anyone, including parents and choristers. The “prize” will include conducting coaching as necessary, as well as working together to choose the most appropriate song. Bidding will start at $3,000. We hope it will be a very competitive item!

Carnegie Hall History
Carnegie Hall’s renowned acoustics have made it America’s most famous concert venue for over a century. It is a mecca for the greatest musicians in the world, often at the top of their “bucket list.” Did you know that the premiere concert was conducted by none other than Tchaikovsky? Other giants of music history who have performed there include Dvořák, Mahler, Bartók, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Judy Garland and The Beatles. The last public lecture of Mark Twain took place there in 1906. We hope you will have a few moments to visit Carnegie Hall’s Rose Museum before the concert or during intermission. It includes exhibits of the thousands of major artists who have performed there since the hall opened in 1891.

Chorister Profiles - FCCC Seniors !

We have an outstanding group of seniors in the FCCC this year! It is always interesting to learn about them, their favorite songs and to hear their thoughts about the choir. Below is the first group of profiles for this season. Congratulations to these talented singers!

Name: Emily Hoffman
Age: 17
School: Fairfield Warde High School
Town: Fairfield
Favorite FCCC Song: Bridge Over Troubled Water, Biebl Ave Maria, Sing Me to Heaven, Bonny Wood Green, Wanting Memories

There are not words to describe how much I have valued these past eight years with the FCCC. It is crazy to think that by the end of next year, I will have spent half my life singing in this choir. When I was younger and listening to all the past seniors speak about what this choir meant to them, each one talked about this choir being a family. At the time, I had thought it was because they didn’t have anything original to say, but now, as I begin my final year with the choir, I realized they were all saying that because it was true. To be surrounded every Monday and Wednesday by other kids who share my deep passion for music and singing is something I don’t often find anywhere else. This choir gives me permission to be myself. While in school I am quiet, guarded, and have a difficult time being social. I feel like I come alive when I am in rehearsal. Singing in this choir has taught me the importance of hard work, of persistence, of discipline, of commitment, of having confidence in myself and, above all, how to have fun being awesome. I have grown immensely as a musician and a performer during my years here. With the FCCC, I have been given amazing opportunities to perform at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans, the Golden Gate Choral Festival and Competition in California, several locations in Boston and Cape Cod, and soon Paris and the World Choir Games in Belgium. Thank you, Mr. Noyes, for your commitment to excellence, for holding us to such high standards, and for providing us with these life-changing opportunities. You have set a very high bar for my choir life after high school. Thank you, Mrs. Beatty, for always being there for us when we need you. And, finally, I have to thank Ms. Bettke, my elementary school music teacher, for inspiring my passion in music at a young age and introducing me to this choir. Without you, I may not have found my way to the FCCC and might have been on a very different path in life. When I first joined as a little girl in fourth grade, I never imagined just how much this choir or these people would impact my life. As I look ahead to college and further studies in music, I can only hope to find a choir that will measure up to my experience with the FCCC.

I decided to join FCCC in 4th grade, and after 9 years, I can say that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The opportunities I have had because of FCCC are simply incredible. This spring, I will be singing at Carnegie Hall for the 3rd time in my life; I have travelled to DC, Ireland, and Boston/Cape Cod; I’ve performed in productions of multiple operas, sang on America’s Got Talent, and wildly expanded both my knowledge and passion for music. And all along the way, I’ve made some of my closest friends, the kind of people who I know I will be in touch with for the rest of my life. What happens because of FCCC is purely magical, and though I’ll never be ready to say goodbye, I know I’ll cherish the memories from these past 9 years forever. Thank you so much to Mr. Noyes, and all of the FCCC staff, for providing me with the wonderful opportunities to grow as a musician and as an individual. Their dedication and hard work for this choir is something that cannot be easily found, and because of it, they have truly brightened the lives of every member of the FCCC community, as well as all of the people we’ve gotten the chance to perform for. I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to have this experience, and I will never forget i t.

FCCC has meant a lot to me over all these years, and it has been one of the few consistent things in my life. It has really nurtured the passion for music I've felt since kindergarten with Mr. Noyes as my teacher, and it hurts to know this is the last year I'll experience such an amazing group of people. One of my biggest regrets is not joining Chamber sooner, because it has such a high level of expectations that are always exceeded each year. Mr. Noyes does an awesome job pushing us past our limits to achieve outstanding results, and I can say with confidence I haven't experienced this in any other group, whether it be music related or not. Everyone here is so dedicated and kind that it really feels like a family that encourages itself to go ever further. Writing this has really made me realize how much I take this environment for granted, so please don't do the same and enjoy every second of this incredible group!

Favorite FCCC Song: Children Go Where I Send Thee

FCCC has been such a meaningful and impactful part of my life for the past nine years. Choir has brought me and my three brothers (who are all now in FCCC) so much closer together, singing our favorite songs at home and going out for ice cream after concerts. FCCC has also given me the opportunity to make so many friends, both within the choir and while we’re on tour. I’ve been so fortunate to experience so many unique opportunities with this choir: singing at Carnegie Hall (twice!), Lincoln Center, touring Ireland, and competing in California. FCCC has taught me practically everything I know about music. Mr. Noyes and all of the conductors have helped to shape me into a better singer and developed my passion for music, and for that I am incredibly grateful!

Wow. It feels like just yesterday that I was walking into my very first FCCC rehearsal in fourth grade. I am blown away by how fast my time has gone by here in this amazing group. FCCC has taught me more about music than any other classroom I’ve been in. I am beyond grateful for this amazing opportunity to be a loyal member of an incredibly talented group. The highlight of my time with this group has been to sing on the stage at Carnegie Hall! Many artists wait their entire lives to sing on that stage and to say that I have been there with this wonderful group of people will stay with me forever. As someone who will be pursuing a musical theater career major in college, I can truly say that FCCC has gotten me to the high level of musical knowledge that I need for that career. Thank you especially to Mr. Noyes for encouraging me and introducing me to this amazing musical group! Thank you also to everyone associated with FCCC for giving me the best musical experience I could ask for, and especially for all of the wonderful friendships that will last a lifetime. Music is a universal language!

Favorite Song: Will the Circle Be Unbroken

Unlike my peers, sports were never my calling. In the 3rd grade, my parents and I decided I should take a different route, which brought me to choir. These past nine years have not only changed the way I appreciate music, but have shaped many different aspects of my life. In my first choir practice, although nervous, I was amazed by the fact that every chorister had a love for singing. Since that first rehearsal, I’ve been able to meet many different friends through our shared love for music. Although sometimes I would feel too tired to go to rehearsal, I would always leave Wednesday nights humming the songs. This experience has introduced me to many different genres of music and has left me a more well-rounded person. I am so grateful for everything FCCC has taught me and will take these skills with me as I go to college next year.

For nine years now, I’ve been exceptionally lucky to be a member of FCCC. Choir has been a prominent part of my life since age ten, and I will miss all of the conductors, friends, and guests who shaped my experience. Since I’ve had to sacrifice choir in my high school schedule, I’m that much more grateful to keep music in my life. There’s something truly special about being surrounded by so many people who love music as much as you do. FCCC is an experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Favorite Song: Wanting Memories and Bonny Wood Green

I distinctly remember walking into my first Wednesday night rehearsal as a nervous, shaky 12-year old girl. I was scared of the older kids, scared of the difficult music, the hard work. Little did I understand how the dedication of the conductors and the kindness shown to me by every chorister would shape me as both a musician and young adult. Due to the hard work of Mr. Noyes and the entire FCCC staff, I’ve been able to travel to incredible sites, such as Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts and the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. I have not only fostered life-long friendships with the other FCCC singers, but with musicians from California and Australia. I cannot thank Mr. Noyes, Mrs. Beatty, and my fellow choristers enough for the incredible growth they’ve sprouted within me! Without this choir, I would be missing a large part of myself and my second family.

Favorite FCCC Song: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

I’ve been in FCCC since seventh grade, and throughout my entire experience I’ve learned so much about working in groups and making friends with my fellow artists. I’ve learned how to read music, and identify scales, as well as music theory. I don’t think that I would have learned all this otherwise, and it has helped me grow even further in and out of choir practice. Between working with the grown-ups for Lincoln Center, to performing for basketball games with the Chamber Singers, there have always been new experiences just waiting to be found and realized in this choir. My favorite song we’ve sung thus far would be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious , because even when I was listening to the song on the recording I could feel the passion and enthusiasm in everyone’s voice. I know FCCC will keep making wonderful moments like those for their members possible even when I’m gone, and I know that when those moments happen the kids will have fun being awesome!

Favorite FCCC Song: Total Praise, Sing me to Heaven, Wanting Memories….. And so much more
Singing has always been my passion, but it wasn’t until fifth grade that I was first introduced to FCCC. My mom, having limited experience in music, asked my fifth-grade music teacher for advice, and she recommended a choir. Being a shy sixth-grader from a foreign town was a bit rough at first. I was quite confused when Mr. Noyes asked the four basics of singing and everyone responded in unison “Posture, Breath, Tone, and Diction.” For the first time, I was in a room full of people who loved to sing, people who truly wanted to be there and not just because it was a school requirement. In my freshman year, I joined Chamber. We live 40 minutes away, so my mom was not so keen on driving Mondays and Wednesdays, but my love for the choir only grew. When we went to Ireland, I made friends for the first time. Choir has not only helped me grow as a singer, but has shaped the person I have become. I am forever thankful for the opportunities that Mr. Noyes and the other conductors have given me, and for their hard work and dedication. Although I am sad my time in FCCC is coming to a close, I thank you all for the love and support you have shown me. I wish you all another great year of fun, singing, and hard work of course.

FCCC has given me the opportunity to grow as a singer in many ways. Through the FCCC strategies, such as opening the spaces and shaping the vowels, I have improved greatly as a singer.
I will carry on my learned singing strategies and skills to college and further. The community is a big part of the reason why I have gone back to FCCC year after year. Being surrounded by a group of hard-working teenagers, who are passionate about music, has continuously made me excited for every Wednesday practice. Without being a part of FCCC, I would not have gained the confidence I have now in my singing. The experiences that FCCC has offered me, such as performing in Carnegie Hall, have been “once in a lifetime” experiences that I will hold dear to my heart for years to come. The level of commitment and intensity of FCCC is unlike any other choir. As a result, I know the directors want me to improve as a singer and as an individual. I want to thank FCCC and all the wonderful directors for an amazing 7 years! Remember kids, have fun being awesome!

After seven years with FCCC, it has become like a family to me, and I’m sad to say goodbye. On the other hand, I am excited to be able to come back year after year to experience new FCCC members growing and learning as musicians. Over the years, Mr. Noyes and all of the talented conductors and accompanists have taught us so many skills to improve our vocal techniques. They have helped us expand our appreciation of music, and singing all my favorite songs from the FCCC repertoire always brings a smile to my face. I am looking forward to spreading my own roots and joining other choirs, where I will continue to grow. Being a part of FCCC has been one of the best experiences in my life. It has helped foster a community of friends and leaders, creating a web of interconnected people spreading a love of music wherever they go in life.
Chorister News
You may have already heard about this next story since it was recently featured on CNN, CBS, Newsweek and others. Here is one of the articles.
Meet Medi Teddy, a Bear That Hides Those Scary Hospital IV Bags and Tubes, and the 12-Year-Old Connecticut Girl Who Created It

Necessity is but one mother of invention. Sometimes compassion motivates people to put their imaginations and a handy glue gun to work. That’s the type of inventor 12-year-old Ella Casano is – the thoughtful kind. When she was 7, Ella was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. “It’s when her body attacks and destroys its own platelets, so it puts her at higher risk for bleeding or injury, more than most people,” Meg Casano, Ella’s mother, told CNN .
Many children outgrow the disease, which can lead to bleeding and infection, but that hasn’t happened so far for Ella, who lives in Fairfield, Connecticut. She needs blood transfusions every six to eight weeks – not fun for anyone, let alone a child who’d rather be singing in the Fairfield County Children’s Choir than visiting the hospital.

“When I had my first infusion, I was surprised and a little bit intimidated by the look of the amount of tubing and medical equipment on my IV pole,” Ella said on her website . “As I saw more and more children experiencing the same feelings, I became more interested in creating a friendlier experience for young IV patients, so I created Medi Teddy.” She grabbed a glue gun, some scissors and an old favorite teddy bear. Soon, she had created a delightful disguise for the frightening IV pole and its assortment of lifesaving, but scary, tubes and blood products.

Her goal was to make 500 Medi Teddys to give away to children who, like herself, were afraid of the hospital treatment they had to undergo. Her mother helped with the patents, nurses from her hospital product-tested Medi Teddy, and Ella and her family found a manufacturer. They set up a GoFundMe page to cover the $5,000 cost of manufacturing 500 Medi Teddys.

People from around the world — as far away as South Africa — soon jumped in. And even though her tax-exempt status hasn’t come through yet, Ella has raised nearly $24,000, almost five times what she asked for.

Alumni News
For the second year, FCCC alumna Katherine Waugh has been elected as the music director of Out of the Blue, Duke University’s top a cappella group. Now a senior, Katherine was selected for the group as a freshman. She is also an Executive Board member of the Duke Chorale, where she was instrumental in bringing the group to Fairfield in March 2018 for a joint concert with our Chamber Singers.

In the past three years, Out of the Blue has travelled to Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, San Francisco, Boston, and many venues in the North Carolina Research Triangle area (near Duke University in Durham, NC). The group releases a professional album every two years (the next album is coming out in December).

Duke Out of the Blue can be found on Spotify ( http://bit.ly/DukeUnivOOTB), iTunes (Duke Out of the Blue), Instagram (@dukeoutoftheblue), Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/dukeootb/), their website ( http://www.dukeoutoftheblue.org/), and their most recent music video on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtX1rLv6iCw). They are looking forward to a trip in the fall ’19 semester to California's Bay Area, singing at Cameron Indoor Stadium for Duke Men's Basketball, and for more exciting projects to be announced in the coming months!

Katherine was also awarded the Aerospace Engineering Scholarship from Delta Airlines at the International Women in Aviation Conference in Los Angeles, California in March 2019. She had a summer internship (2019) with Collins Aerospace in Windsor Locks, CT, and recently added a music minor to her engineering degree plan.

Here is a note Katherine recently sent to us:

Mr. Noyes,
I have been keeping up with the news about the other FCCC alums! All of them are doing wonderful things, and I'm so excited for their futures. It's so great to see people I got to share great memories with succeed. Recording with Out of the Blue has been one of the best experiences I've had with a cappella singing. What I learned from you in FCCC has hugely helped me in my music directing, and FCCC continues to be one of my biggest musical influences.
Best,
Katherine
Chamber Singers Summer Tour – June 25 – July 1, 2019

The FCCC Chamber Singers traveled to Boston, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) for their annual summer tour. Highlights included four concerts: at King’s Chapel in Boston, the First Parish Church in Duxbury, the First Congregational Church of Falmouth and The Tabernacle at the Martha’s Vineyard Camp-Meeting Association. Touring included walking most of the Boston Freedom Trail, the Salem Witch Museum (by popular request), a whale watch from Provincetown, a clambake & outing at Duxbury Beach, a pool party and lunch at Great Harbors in East Falmouth hosted by the McDermott family and, after a ferry ride to Martha’s Vineyard, a breakfast at the original Black Dog before our final concert.

Heinrich Christensen, the Director of Music at King’s Chapel, wrote,I was thoroughly impressed by the high standard of their performance. Not only did they sing selections from the classical choral canon with perfect intonation, blend, and great awareness of style, they also offered folk songs and favorites from musical theatre and the Great American Songbook with wonderful flair and engagement. I was sorry the program was not long enough to include numbers from their gospel set, which I am certain would have showed yet another aspect of their remarkable stylistic sensibilities.”

The Director of Music in Duxbury sent this letter:

Dear Mr. Noyes,

As Music Director here at First Parish Church in Duxbury, and on behalf of the Music Committee, it is my pleasure to write to you to express our appreciation for the wonderful performance given by your chorus here last month.

I was totally unprepared for the “mature” sound your young people produced, full of expressivity and refinement.  I’ve just recently retired from 52 years on the faculty of Northeastern University in Boston, where most of my time was spent with the university’s Choral Society. Your “children’s” choir can compete with any of the best college choirs.

I especially appreciate the rapport you have with your singers. They clearly exhibit a devotion to the high standard you’ve set for them and I’m sure they make you proud.

Let’s talk soon about your next appearance here in Duxbury.

FCCC Staff News
Lisa Bettke and Ashley Zadravecz traveled to Italy together this past summer with the Wilton Singers. They spent time in Padua, Venice, Florence, Montecatini, Pisa and Lucca. Miss Zadravecz also traveled to Boston, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard with the FCCC Chamber Singers.

FCCC Concert Choir Conductor, Jacqueline Sugrue, was married to Ian Tait on Sunday, July 14! Since Ian and Jacqueline are both professional musicians and educators, there was a great deal of music in the service and many musicians in attendance. The FCCC Chamber Singers performed One Voice, Down in the River to Pray and Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, plus two hymns. The couple enjoyed their honeymoon in Ireland.

Jon Noyes and his wife, Sarah, traveled to France and Iceland in July. Along the way, he was able to explore some options for the Chamber Singers tour in 2020 to France and Belgium. He also hiked Mount Washington in New Hampshire with a friend from junior high school to celebrate a major birthday.
