Note from our Moderator
October in our house brings the energy and excitement of costume-picking, pumpkin-carving, apple picking, fall hikes, crisp evening air, hoodies and sweaters, roasted marshmallows over a backyard fire pit, and, eventually, trick-or-treating.

As someone who loves autumn most among the seasons, I enjoy answering the question of “How’s it going?” around this time of year by saying, “I’m like Humpty Dumpty – having a great fall.”

All the activities happening in our town and on the South Shore remind us of the vigor and vitality of our community and region – one of the nicest aspects of attending fall get-togethers, for me anyways, is unexpectedly bumping into people I know at community events who are making or enjoying their own fall traditions. Wishing you a happy autumn as well!

Stewardship Moment 10-3-21 by Stacy Havens
Good morning.

Today we’re kicking-off our stewardship season. Our theme this year is Renewal.  It’s been a challenging 18 months to say the least and now is the time to renew our connections: a belief in something bigger than ourselves that helps us stay connected - to the Earth, other human beings, and to God.

My husband, Matt, and I came to HCC looking for a foundation of religion for our two boys. What we found was a home and a family. We’ve missed our family during the pandemic but we’ve been fortunate that our church has been a rock during these hard times. Now it’s time to give back to our home, this home, and this family. It’s a time to give thanks for what we have, trust in each other, transform to become our better selves, and to renew our faith.

In the coming weeks, the Stewardship Board will be in touch through messages like these during worship, letters, postcards, participation in Board events, and possibly one-on-one meetings to discuss our renewal. We hope that your renewed sense of generosity will help us sustain our robust pledging and to keep our home strong for the future. There are people to take care of, including our pastor, utility bills, and upkeep to our building to name just a few. With your help we’ll be able to maintain our home and our connection to our community.
We are committed to the philosophy of Faith-based giving –giving that isn’t based on dollar amounts but on what works best for each individual or family. We would love as much participation as possible, regardless of amount, whether that be $50 or $5,000 for the year. We would just like everyone to participate. Our goal is to receive 150 pledges this year. So, I humbly ask that you consider giving back to this wonderful home that has given and continues to give to us. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.

Thank you.
A NOTE FROM CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Meet our new teacher: Miss Kristin!

Hello HCC community! My name is Kristin Pulkkinen. I moved to the South Shore about three years ago with my eight year old daughter, Bella. In my spare time I enjoy gardening and cooking for my family. You can find me at local parks and beaches. I love animals and have recently added two very cute guinea pigs into my family! I'm so happy and excited to have Hingham Congregational Church as a part of my journey!

Title Change for Jen DiMarzio

As our program year ramps up, our Board of Christian Education has approved a title change for our Head Teacher, Jen DiMarzio. She is now our Interim Director of Christian Education. Jen’s new title comes with additional hours and responsibilities. Please tell Jen “Thank you!” when you see her. We are blessed to have her help and leadership!

Senior High Food Drive

The HCC Senior High Youth Group will be collecting non-perishable items for the Hingham Food Pantry over the next two weeks. You can bring your items on Sundays 10/10 and 10/17 or contact Susanne in the office for alternative drop off days/times. This is a great chance for our youth to learn about hunger in our community and ways to alleviate it. Look for collection boxes in the narthex and Hale Fellowship Hall.
Items requested by the Pantry are: canned vegetables, canned fruit, crackers, cookies.

Thank you!

  •            We will practice physical distancing
  •            We will open windows as weather permits
  •            We will end rehearsals at 8:30
 JUNIOR CHOIR IN OCTOBER

Jr. Choir rehearsals resumed on September 26 and will continue fairly regularly on Sunday mornings after church during October.
We still need to be very careful with the kids, given the continued presence of COVID cases in the Hingham area. The plan is to follow safety guidelines for children by a) rehearsing OUTdoors whenever possible; and when b) rehearsing INdoors 1) providing as much air circulation as possible, 2) distancing the singers, 3) wearing masks and 4) keeping rehearsals shorter than in the past. NOT the preferred way to do it! But - operating with these guidelines, we want our families to feel comfortable with their children joining Jr. Choir this fall. Please e-mail Mr. B. at jeeko@comcast.net with your thoughts, concerns, and (hopefully) interest. Your name will be cheerfully added to our mailing list at any time should you choose to join us.

Bucks for Birds
Fall is in the air, and we are starting to plan for November. The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,
not reluctantly o r under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. Corinthians 9: 6-7

The golden season is evident at the Consignment Center, as consignors and customers return to reconnect, update inventory, and shop for bargains. In the first three weeks of business, merchandise received as a Donation Offering on Sept. 12 has already resulted in sales of over $750. which are designated for the HCC General Fund. Again, we thank you for your consistent support and generosity.October signals the onset of Halloween costumes and décor! This year, we are encouraging families to make imaginative costumes and are providing a cache of unique fabrics, one-of-a-kind backdrops, and a myriad of accessories from which to create. Looking for a firehart? Gypsy skirt? Clown wig or colored braids? Bigfoot (feet) and gloves fit for a queen await alongside fabric lengths suitable for capes, gowns, ghosts, or furry friends .

Wacky Wednesday returns on October 6. Come in and find a surprise “pop-up” sale in one department. The following week, Thanksgiving items will be accepted as of Tuesday, October 12. By the end of this month, we will begin to accept warmer clothing for chilly days ahead. Winter wear can be brought in (as consignment or as donation) on October 26. Make sure that these coats hats, mittens, boots and other sturdy garments are clean and in good repair. We are facing increased charges to dispose of unusable clothing, so check those buttons, snaps, and zippers carefully.

The Farm To Food Pantry program

This summer, with dire weather happening in the US and around the world, there is clear evidence that the negative effect of climate change is happening NOW.

Kit Schlosky set up a partnership with Holly Hill Farm for this volunteer event to make food for the food pantry with donations from Holy Hill Farm. With Fall harvest season fast approaching the Farm to Food Pantry program looks forward to more opportunities to bring freshly processed produce to local food pantries. The response so far has been fabulous!

We are looking for additional people to become certified food managers to help oversee events. The class is an online, video based format that is really interesting and easy to follow. Please contact Kit Schlosky at 781 915 7299 or knschlosky@gmail.com for more information.

October's Monthly Green Thought
EMBRACE EARTH-FRIENDLY FASHION

An estimated 11.3 million TONS of TEXTILES went into landfills in 2018, according to a recent article in Parade Magazine. “If we can keep the stuff that’s already been made in circulation a little longer, there’s less impact on the planet from production.” That is according the NRDC (National Resource Defense Council.) First, we need to think before we buy. But once we are ready to doff whatever for the final time, think first about donating it to our own HCC CONSIGNMENT CENTER. If that article of clothing is just too far gone, we in Hingham are fortunate that the Transfer Station hosts numerous bins for clothing (and shoe!) recycling - extending the use of our wearables.
You might also check out this website for recycling jeans.
