Phil, is there any other way a variable speed drive (VSD or inverter) can be used to save me money?
There is.

For example, we had a case at a car manufacturer on their paint line. In this instance the car bodies were moving along a line which “painted” the monocoques with various treatments.

When we looked at the system the pumps behind the spraying system were running at a fixed speed and continuously.

As you can imagine the paints were only needed when a car body was in the spray area.
We added VSDs to the system and sensors that detected when there was a car body in the spraying area, and when there was not.

When there was no body in the area the pumps shut down, and as soon as a fresh body appeared they ran up again.

The savings in this case were not only the electrical power used to run the pumps, but also savings in a lot less paint being used and wasted.
