In a bid to heal Washington’s housing crisis, lawmakers consider allowing more duplexes and other types of ‘middle housing’

Single-family homes are as synonymous with Spokane as a summer stroll through Riverfront Park or the thundering cadence of Bloomsday runners in May.

But is Spokane’s affection for white-picket fences about to be tested?

Two bills in the state Legislature would increase where “middle” housing – a category of residences
between homes for single families and large apartment buildings – could be built in cities across the state.

The proposals would require cities to allow housing, such as duplexes, triplexes and courtyard apartments, to be built on land currently zoned for single family homes.

DOL Data Breach
The Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) has issued a notice to all real estate licensees that during the week of January 24, 2022, it became aware of suspicious activity involving professional and occupational license data.

As a result of the suspicious activity, DOL began an investigation and shut down the Professional Online Licensing and Regulatory Information System (POLARIS) to protect the personal information of professional licensees.

Member Engagement
Key to the success of any professional association is engagement by its members. No one knows the streets better than those who walk them every day.

2022 Spokane Association of REALTORS® president Eric Etzel shares how member engagement helps you grow your business, save you time, makes you money - and represents your interests as a REALTOR® in Washington state.

The video runs two minutes:
What’s Happening in Olympia
HB 1951 - Following a Statewide REALTOR® Call-to-Action that generated over 4,000 emails, a scaled back version has been advanced out of committee. The new version no longer removes the don’t know box, and does not remove the actual knowledge standard- that is the good news. The bad news is that it adds the following question to Form 17 “Is there any damage to the property from animals, including urine, feces, or other waste; chewing on wires or siding of a main structure; or digging”.

HB 2059 – Washington REALTORS® backed bill that would ban Love Letters bill made it out of committee and looks to have a good shot at passage.

HB 1782/SB 5670 – BOTH Middle Housing inventory bills made it out of Committee but are moving slower.

Next week!

Tuesday, February 15th
1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Take the Washington REALTORS®
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pledge
Washington REALTORS® is dedicated to the work of equity and inclusion.

Our association is an acknowledged national leader in developing programs and policies to increase access to home-ownership for communities of color.

Like many states, Washington must reconcile a history of unfair housing practices, including redlining and unfair lending practices that left many people of color unable to access the dream of home-ownership.

We remain committed to this work, we acknowledge that it is ongoing, and we invite accountability and discussion to help us carry out this work more thoughtfully and effectively.

Take the Washington REALTORS® Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion pledge to earn an NAR Fair Housing lapel pin and recognition on the Washington REALTORS® website.
Take all three DEI education opportunities below, then complete the DEI Pledge form.

2. Fairhaven

All successful participants will receive an NAR Fair Housing Lapel Pin and recognition on the Washington REALTORS® website.
