UCLA quiz program keeps older minds active
Eddie Nash, a UCLA sophomore, peered at his audience and then read the next question on the big digital screen. "Which U.S. festival hosted over 350,000 music fans in 1969?" he asked. Eight attentive students in their 60s and older studied the...

Gene Etheridge - Etheridge Farms
|
|
Vendor Highlight: Etheridge Farms is a cornerstone at the Encino Farmers Market. Gene Etheridge has been selling fresh organically grown produce since we opened the market in the 1990’s. The Farm is a seasonal, year round farm that has a variety of fruits, nuts, citrus, and more. The variety of citrus fruits available is staggering, and you can always ask for a taste. Additionally, Etheridge farms offers fresh nuts like walnuts and almonds, as well as incredible nut butters straight from the farm. They have rotating specialty products like mulberries which sold out in under an hour, or hoshigaki - dried persimmon, using traditional techniques that Gene learned from his Japanese neighbors growing up in the California central valley.
|
|
As a proponent of local and family owned farms, Etheridge served on the California Farmers Market Committee for 10 years as chairman. This experience working directly with the state government through (CDFA) helped set precedents all across California, advocating for farmers and ensuring that Farmers Markets are created by farmers or nonprofits. This strengthens the direct links between local farmers and their communities. We can see part of this legacy today as ONEgeneration is the host of Encino Farmers Market.
In addition to farming, Gene Etheridge has a 40 year background in education, working in public schools in low income communities as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Growing up in California’s central valley with a father who was a chef, Gene has always been connected to the land and fostered an appreciation for good food grown locally. He says that to be a good farmer is to be a good caretaker, to let the land be, to listen, and to take care of it. Etheridge Farms spans over 55 acres of acres of land today which has grown from a humble 1.6 acres decades ago. Besides a lifetime working in education and farming, Gene loves building classic cars. About life, he says “when the choice is to be right or to be happy, I’m happy”.

ALONE AND LONELY
a poem by Norman Molesko
My seeing is not okay. I don’t recall what I saw at times.
Maybe I don’t hear just right. My hearing is poor.
And what’s worse, I ‘m not sure what’s in store for me.
I am uncertain and unsure what the future will hold for me.
You should realize that I am alone and feel lonesome at times.
I worry why my heart rate and pulse readings fluctuate so.
I make decisions in my mind that are faulty and I can regret.
I don’t always get my facts right and ignore why I screw up so.
These words above exemplifies a person being a “nervous wreck”.
Millions of Seniors, men and women, who live alone and/or
feel lonely, at times, are impacted by the condition of loneliness.
If you find yourself in this condition, reach out and share with
your doctor how you are mentally and physically feeling,
to combat the serious, unhealthy effects of loneliness.

Last month, ONEgeneration's the Grandparents As Parents program celebrated our caregivers by hosting an appreciation event focused on mental health awareness in partnership with Take Action for Mental Health. Caregivers were treated to experiences and classes that taught them ways to deal with stress and practice better self-care by taking care of both their minds and bodies. Activities included a sound bath, massages, drum circles and classes about essential oils. Caregivers were treated to an amazing lunch and given a beautiful gift bag of self-care products and mental health resource information. A major surprise for our caregivers was that each attending family got to take home a Theragun Pro generously provided by the Good+Foundation.
While the caregivers took this time to care for and celebrate themselves older kids were treated to a ropes course experience day at Cal State Northridge and younger kids attended our day care where they got their faces painted, participated in their own drum circle and went home with very fun gift boxes. The GAP families had a wonderful day and ONEgeneration would like to say thank you to all the vendors who provided their services and products and took such good care of our caregivers. GAP staff would like to say a very special thank you to the Good+Foundation for their generous support which put such great smiles on our caregivers faces.
