Fix Your Content Day Recap

On May 18, Business Affairs and Human Resources participated in Fix Your Content Day, a 24-hour worldwide competition dedicated to making online digital content more accessible. The teams remediated 120 documents, exceeding the original 80-document goal!

This initiative showcases our campus values and CARE standards in action, as accessibility ambassadors and owners of inaccessible documents collaborated to promote inclusivity and equity on campus.

This accomplishment is a significant step toward our university's goal of achieving at least a 90% accessibility score on all campus websites by July 1. To recognize the teams' hard work, Business Affairs provided snacks in the Campus Services Building breakroom this week.

Check out some fun pictures of the celebration below.

Employee Highlight: Julie Moos

Julie Moos wants to make our jobs easier by keeping us safe. As the safety training officer for Risk Management & Safety (RMS), Julie and her safety training specialists develop and manage all safety training programs for UNLV. She loves helping people learn more about safety, especially face-to-face. “My favorite part of the job is in-person training classes. I love seeing the lightbulb go off as someone realizes how safety can make a difference,” Julie says.

A native of Southern California, Julie considers herself a de facto Las Vegas local after moving to the valley in 1999. She began her career with UNLV in 2017 and has enjoyed being a part of the department's success. “As a safety professional, my first thought is how can I educate people to prevent incidents from happening,” Julie says. Over the last six years, she has overseen an expansion of programming that included shifting to online training and adding accessibility features. “When changing platforms from the vault to REBELearn, we took the opportunity to make our training more substantive and accessible,” Julie says. Online training courses allow those who work remotely to stay up to speed with safety knowledge while away from campus.

Julie collaborates with departments across campus to achieve safety compliance. "Recently, I trained student workers in the theatre department who operate aerial lift equipment during stage productions,” she says. She encourages departments to reach out and work with her. Safety training courses, with the exception of CPR certification, are free. “Doing things the safe way is not only the right way, in many cases, it’s also the easiest way,” she says. Check out this UNLV Today announcement for information about upcoming safety training courses.

When she isn’t promoting safety on campus, she enjoys traveling with her family. “We love camping and visiting Disney World,” Julie says. She loves going to places she’s never visited. Julie plans to camp in Yellowstone National Park and take her family to London in the near future.

It’s not unusual to find Julie at a Tom Jones concert. She has attended several of his concerts in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. She once even contemplated flying to England to see Jones perform when his American tour dates were sparse.

Celebrating Pride Month

Pride month celebration graphic

June is Pride Month for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community. It celebrates the LGBTQIA movement and commemorates the Stonewall Riots. These riots were sparked by a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969, and are considered a turning point in the LGBTQIA rights movement. This event led to subsequent demonstrations and grassroots organizing efforts that continue today.

The Center, which has been serving the LBGTQIA community since 1993, is a community-based organization that supports and promotes activities to further the well-being, positive image, and human rights of LGBTQIA individuals, their allies, and low-to-moderate-income residents in Southern Nevada.

UNLV supports and celebrates LGBTQIA communities through various programs, services, resources, and educational opportunities.

Employee Assistance Program Resources

Take the Susainability Survey!

UNLV’s Sustainability Task Force is working with Brailsford & Dunlavey, a program management firm based in Washington, D.C., to create a campuswide climate action plan, nicknamed the Rebel CAP. The document and process, which will have a climate justice and equity lens applied throughout, will serve as an official guide for integrating sustainability practices into university operations to reduce our carbon emissions and improve the environment.

Your opinion is a key part of the process!

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to complete the Rebel CAP Assessment Survey to tell us what you think are our most important sustainability issues. The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Your responses can be anonymous if you wish. You can also sign up to work on the plan if you are interested. Your feedback will help to inform recommendations included in the plan.

The Rebel CAP will be completed in 2024, making UNLV the first NSHE college or university to have an official climate action plan.

Spotlight on Service

The fourth annual Business Affairs customer service survey results are in and our teams received a number of kudos for providing exceptional customer service. Here are a few examples of the positive feedback:

(Risk Management & Safety’s) mandatory annual courses and updates are all online now and interactive with video/scenarios. This is very helpful. RMS also comes to our building and does annual inspections, etc. They are very efficient overall and communicate well before and after the visit.”

“I had to use Delivery Services on multiple occasions on short notice and they were very helpful and accommodating. Great staff and teamwork!”

Upgrading Your Digital Literacy

Google Workspace introduced in-line threading for Google Chat in March 2023 to create a more streamlined flow of conversation. In-line threading allows users to reply directly to any message in new spaces and some existing spaces. This creates a separate in-line thread where smaller groups of people can continue a conversation on a specific topic.
