DC CFAR members Dr. DeMarc Hickson (Executive Director, Us Helping Us and Co-Lead, DC CFAR Sexual and Gender Minorities Scientific Interest Group), Ms. Marcia Ellis (Chair, DC CFAR Community Partnership Council and Community Coordinator, DC CFAR) and Dr. Carlos Rodríguez-Díaz (Associate Professor, GWSPH and Co-Lead, DC CFAR Latina/o/x Scientific Interest Group) joined the event commemorating World AIDS Day at the White House on Dec. 1st. As part of the activities in recognition of World AIDS Day, the White House released the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for 2022-2025. More information on how the DC CFAR's mission and ongoing activities align with the new strategy will be featured in the Weekly Update in the weeks ahead.

New Publication on HIV Care Readiness Among Youth
|
The authors found significant differences by demographic and clinical characteristics in readiness to transition from pediatric to adult HIV services. In addition, "lower improvement in transition readiness among youth with a longer history of HIV suggests that adolescents and youth living with HIV with perinatally acquired HIV might require additional support than those with horizontally acquired HIV".

In case you missed it, on December 3rd the DC CFAR Global SIG hosted a Virtual Citywide Seminar in recognition of World AIDS Day. The seminar featured a presentation from Dr. Heena Brahmbhatt, Senior HIV Advisor, USAID on "HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa in the context of COVID-19: addressing ongoing and emerging syndemics through integrated and sustainable responses to promote health equity". Following the talk, discussants Ms. Rosa Mahlasera, Ambassador, EGPAF, and Ms. Khadijah Abdullah (RAHMA) provided their insights.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. George Kerr III who was elected to serve as the new DC CFAR Community Partnership Council (CPC) Chair. Mr. Kerr is the Community Co-lead of the CFAR's Drug User Health Scientific Interest Group and part of the Executive Leadership Committee for the National CFAR CAB Coalition (N3C) and the Chair of the Faith and Spirituality Committee. As the newly elected CPC Chair, he will lead the committee and work in close coordination with the DC CFAR leadership to ensure strong community engagement in our work. Under his leadership, the DC CFAR CPC will build upon the important legacy of his predecessor, Ms. Marcia Ellis who is retiring after serving as the CPC Chair for 13 years.

We are a dynamic interdisciplinary research team, led by Dr. Lisa Bowleg, that conducts a variety of research projects focused on behavioral and structural aspects of HIV and other health-related issues among diverse populations. The GW Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The position would begin in Fall, 2022 and is searching for scholars whose expertise aligns with the Clinical Psychology program’s mission to train behavioral scientists to identify, implement, and evaluate strategies to reduce health and mental health inequities in a variety of settings.
The HIV League seeks to identify and award scholarships to the most promising students living with HIV/AIDS as evidenced by their educational accomplishments, leadership, and service. Applications are due January 31.
The Health Resources and Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau released funding to support a new initiative entitled “Using Innovative Intervention Strategies to Improve Health Outcomes among People with HIV (2iS).” The Fenway Institute, in partnership with AIDS United, will serve as the Coordinating Center for Technical Assistance for this initiative.
The American STD Association is launching a new summer research fellowship program for junior scholars who are interested in STI research. Applications are due January 12.
DC CFAR SBS Director Dr. Lisa Bowleg just launched her new Intersectionality Training Institute with the goal to help researchers, policymakers and practitioners catalyze health equity. The Institute provides a variety of opportunities for more information click on the link here.
Family Medical and Counseling Services, Inc. (FMCS) is seeking a Research Assistant to assist in the conduct of the DC Cohort study and several related sub-studies. The Research Assistant will assist the site Principal Investigator and Project Director in the overall management and coordination of the study.
The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies in collaboration with the UCSF-Bay Area Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is now accepting applications for the Visiting Professor Program. This year the program supports three tracks to offer to program participants, including a new track funded by NIAID. Applications are due January 19.

Application materials for the HPTN Scholars Program are now available for early-career minority investigators wishing to collaborate with HPTN scientists to develop and implement our HIV prevention research agenda. Initial drafts proposals are due December 10.
