Ahhh, November.
Everyone's ninth favorite month.
The "Turkey" month, it precedes all the end of semester parties, four-days of feasting at the end of the month and of course all the family gatherings at Hanukah, Kwanza and Christmas and the anticipation of a new year.
But November gets a bad rap. It has to do all the heavy lifting. It becomes a harbinger of change. The whisper of things to come. It takes us out of Indian Summer into those first frosty days and cold wind-swept rainy nights that promise winter. It drives the leaves to fly and suggests a season of mittens to come.
And this year it has the added distinction of having adding our national "bring us together" moment. Nov. 3rd.
We hope you all healthy, safe and coping as well as possible and want to remind you that all of us at Daniels do so appreciate your patronage. Now...have some fun! |

What happens when an architectural designer likes to bake? Dinara Kasko is what happens.
The Ukrainian pastry chef is the master of combining baking with geometric figures and architectural designs. She approaches her desserts as if they were buildings, and creates the most unique edible structures ever.
"I have many unrealized ideas and a great desire to experiment. I don't want to imitate others; I want to create something new," Kasko told So Good Magazine.
The only question now is, how do you eat something so beautiful?

Wondering what those keyhole-shaped Tumuli scattered throughout the city of Sakai in Japan are?
A tumulus is a mound of earth or stone raised over a grave. The largest one shown in this overview is the final resting place of Emperor Nintoku. Nearly 1,600 feet long with a mound 115 feet high, it covers the largest area of any tomb in the world.
So, how will you be memoralized?

November Sculpture
Two long-horned bulls, central Turkey, ca. 2000 BCE.
This object would have been placed on top of a standard for religious processions. Bull worship was very common in ancient societies, showing up in ancient Crete (think the minotaur myth), the Lascaux cave in France, Egypt, and Anatolia.

Question
A friend noticed a woman walking down the street recently. Wearing a dress. Somehow it seemed like an aberration. In the middle of the pandemic, we can't help but notice the "comfort" clothes worn by both men and women.
Question is - do you have any longing for another time when we all dressed to go out - even if just for groceries? Sure, times are different - no question. We're a more relaxed culture.
But the question remains: Do you miss the jacket and tie or the fancy dress? Not looking for a fight...just an observation and your thoughts. Tell us here

We were in such a good mood - no one is coming for Thanksgiving - that we thought we'd give you a 2nd chance at one of those Amazon cards. Tell us where those hills are and you may be a winner!
Last month Ron M and Kristin G recognized the most photographed woman at the turn of the century, Cleo de Merode.
And Joe R was the winner of the World Series quiz picking (as did 41 others) The Dodgers as the eventual winners for 2020! Interestingly...no one picked the Mets. Hmmmmm.....

Just A Blurb About The Blurb Guy
And The Purple Cow
Here's a bit of fluff that might enliven your day. At least, we hope so.
How could you not read this now?
I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather see than be one.
This nonsense rhyme was written in 1895 by Gelett Burgess, who invented the word "blurb"
The word blurb originated in 1907. American humorist Gelett Burgess's short 1906 book, "Are You a Bromide?" was presented in a limited edition to an annual trade association dinner.
The custom at such events was to have a dust jacket promoting the work and with, as Burgess' publisher B. W. Huebsch described it, "the picture of a damsel - languishing, heroic, or coquettish - anyhow, a damsel on the jacket of every novel"
In this case the jacket proclaimed "YES, this is a 'BLURB'!" and the picture was of a (fictitious) young woman "Miss Belinda Blurb" shown calling out, described as "in the act of blurbing."
The name and term stuck for any publisher's contents on a book's back cover, even after the picture was dropped and only the complimentary text remained.
The poem was very popular in its day, and became something of a meme, parodied by other writers of the day -
I've never seen a purple cow.
My eyes with tears are full.
I've never seen a purple cow,
And I'm a purple bull.
And later by Ogden Nash -
I've never seen an abominable snowman,
I'm hoping not to see one,
I'm also hoping, if I do,
That it will be a wee one
I never was a vitamin;
I never hope to be one;
but I can tell you anyhow;
I'd rather C than B1 !
Burgess became so exasperated that the nonsense rhyme overshadowed his other work that he eventually wrote this sequel.
Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"-
I'm Sorry, now, I wrote it;
But I can tell you Anyhow
I'll Kill you if you Quote it!

Make Me Math Manic Quiz
The pandemic is making us all a little bit crazy. So, we figure, let's add to the misery with this little math quiz. C'mon, you know you love these things.
An eight-digit number contains two 1s, two 2s, two 3s, and two 4s.
The 1s are separated by 1 digit.
The 2s by 2 digits.
The 3s by 3 digits.
And, naturally, the 4s by 4 digits.
What is the number?

Britta Marakatt-Labba (b. 1951, Idivuoma, Sweden)
Historja Embroidery, print, appliqué, and wool on linen
Britta Marakatt-Labba was born in ldivuoma, outside of Kiruna in northern Sweden. Growing up with a deep knowledge of the collective practice of reindeer husbandry (her parents and her husband are reindeer herders), this sense of movement and migration permeates her textile works.
A defining feature of Historja is its undulating horizon line. A procession of animals emerges from the woods in a procession; first foxes, then bears, then ungulates (all holy for Sámi), then the first people emerge following the reindeer, first on foot and then on sleds.
An entire history is on view, one that begins and ends with Sámi cosmology. In between are different formations of people, who are herding animals, tending to crops and cattle, drying fish.
Yet they are also engaged in other important activities as well: revolting against oppressive authorities (the 1851 Kautokeino uprising) as well as gathering together for political self-determination
This is not a linear history, there are deliberate breaks, shifts in style and content It can be read from right to left or left to right, the storyline generatively shifting with each subsequent view.
