From the Head of School
Dear Goshen Families,

Happy Thursday, everyone! The weekend is upon us! It will be good to enjoy a little rest and relaxation after a very busy start to the school year!

I would like to take a moment to introduce Seen & Heard, a new feature in
The Goshen Weekly that aims to give you a fly-on-the-wall perspective of what your children are up to at school. Each week, a different class will be highlighted. Today we are kicking things off with the Butterflies class! Enjoy this week’s installment and look for news and photos of Goshen’s other students in coming weeks!

Special thanks to Goshen mom Lisa Cannon, who is working with the Administration team this year and wrote this week's feature!

Finally, I would like to take a moment to welcome the Subbio family to Goshen Friends School! Son CJ will join the Ladybugs class beginning next Tuesday. Welcome CJ!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

In Friendship,
Mimi
Seen & Heard...
Butterflies!!
We are currently in our fourth week of school, and Tr. Lauren and Tr. Patty’s Butterflies have been busy! They are learning and playing in the classroom, exploring our 10-acre campus, going on a field trip and attending their four weekly specials classes: art, music, Spanish and outdoor education. Here’s a closer look at all the fun and learning our Butterflies have been up to:
A school-wide celebration of International Day of Peace took place on September 21. Each of the classes sang, “Peace in My Fingers” with Tr. Chris and decorated peace doves which they hung on the fence by our playground. The Butterflies read the book “I Am Peace” with Tr. Lauren and, during circle time, discussed the importance of always choosing peace.
Last week the Butterflies took a field trip to Highland Orchards. While there, students went apple picking and did a fun early math activity with Tr. Lauren – shape identification using paper apples that the students “picked” off the trees. This activity was the culmination of their study on shapes over the last couple of weeks. Before heading home, the children enjoyed a special snack time treat of apple cider and apple cider donuts and visited the pumpkin patch to choose a souvenir gourd!
Back in the classroom this week, Trs. Lauren and Patty and the Butterflies continued their autumn activities with a fall-themed art project: leaf silhouettes against watercolors.
Tr. Chris has been teaching the children about the use of lines in art class. The Butterflies created an “ultimate vacation” painting using different kinds of lines: straight and dotted lines for roads, wavy lines for the ocean, curly lines for clouds, and jagged lines for mountains.
Lots of messy fun (and more art!) has been happening in outdoor ed. First, Tr. Jaime read the book “Mouse Paint,” a story about color mixing. Then students painted and mixed colors on rolled-out butcher paper using flowers, rocks and buffelgrass as their brushes.
For another lesson, the Butterflies turned mud pies into silly mud faces! They started class with some face yoga, then walked around campus with buckets, collecting natural items to use for decoration – berries, walnuts, sticks and leaves. They mixed mud from the mud pit into pies, and then used their decorations to create silly mud faces!
As you can see, our Butterflies have been learning, creating, getting messy and having lots of fun in their first month of school. Stay tuned for a sneak-peek inside another class in next week’s edition of “Seen & Heard!”
From the GPC

Hello Goshen Parents!

Thank you to all who came out to Chipotle last night for our first Restaurant Night of the year! We’ll tell you the proceeds for this scrumptious fundraiser in the next issue!

Back by popular demand, we will partner with Taste of Puebla in Kennett Square for our next fundraising event – delicious taco kits! Families will be able to make their orders online and then pick up their kits here at school. Stay tuned for more information coming next week!
Earlier this week, the GPC delivered pumpkins to every classroom for the children to decorate during the month of October. Thanks to Butterflies mom Andi Zampelli for picking up these beautiful pumpkins and bringing them over to school. The teachers are excited to get decorating with the kids!

Finally, our next monthly meeting will be held via zoom on Tuesday, October 12 at 8pm. The meeting details are listed below.
