MUSD honors staff for Classified School Employee Week
As part of its annual celebration of Milpitas Unified School District Classified Support Staff during Classified School Employee Week (May 21-27), the MUSD Board of Education unanimously adopted Resolution 2023.35 Declaring the Week of May 21-27 as Classified School Employee Week at the May 23 meeting.

MUSD celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage Month
Students from Milpitas High School's Asian American Association produced a video reading of Resolution 2023.34 Recognizing May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which was unanimously adopted by the MUSD Board of Education at the May 23 meeting.
  
SCHOOL BOND UPDATE
Student experiences sharpen pathways as part of Measure AA Bond Dollars at Work program
Under a Project Stabilization Agreement Construction Career Pathways, Milpitas Unified School District has partnered with Blach Construction to provide after-school student learning opportunities at the construction site of the MUSD Innovation Campus, offering students a number of opportunities to learn about a variety of career pathways. Additionally, students have toured the Pipes Trades Training Center and the Electrical Training Alliance of Silicon Valley.

Denise Coleman, our Bond Project Labor Agreement pathways & grant writing support, has led these student learning opportunities throughout the 2022-23 school year and was accompanied by several students who have taken advantage of these opportunities and will share their experiences.
SPECIAL PERFORMANCE
Curtner Elementary fifth grader showcases Indian culture with dance performance
As part of the May 23 Principal's Report, Curtner Elementary School fifth grader Joanna Jacob offered some words about what it means to be able to share her culture with the MUSD community. She then treated everyone to a self-choreographed Indian semi-classical dance performance.

Curtner Principal Kevin Slavin introduced Jacob, as well as fourth-grade teacher Mary Paek, who shared about how the new Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), Character Strong, has supported her class and PTA President Tina Nguyen, who shared how PTA events have supported and strengthened the school community.
RETIREMENT
Retiring educator, union leader Diana Orlando honored by MUSD Board, leadership
When the 2022-23 school year comes to an end in June, elementary school educator and President, Milpitas Teachers Association, Diana Orlando’s “magical career” in education will conclude after 36 years with Milpitas Unified School District. At the May 23 meeting, the Board of Education and District leadership honored Orlando who is retiring after 36 years with MUSD. Read more about her "magical" journey here.

Volunteers from all of our PTA/PTO/PTSOs were recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District leadership for their volunteer service in support of our MUSD students and staff.
Zanker Elementary Sixth Grader Audrey Shen
Zanker Elementary School sixth grader Audrey Shen was recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District leadership for winning the National PTA Reflections art competition in dance choreography. Watch her performance here.
Rancho MS Girls Who Code
Rancho Middle School's Girls Who Code Club was recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District leadership for fundraising in support of the Milpitas Food Pantry.
Milpitas HS boys varsity golf team
The Milpitas High School boys varsity golf team was recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District leadership for winning the league championship and competing in Central Coast Section (CCS) championship.
HIGHLIGHTS
Curtner Elementary School team announced as 2023 MEO Overall School Champion
The Curtner Elementary School team was announced as the inaugural School Overall Points Champion of the 2023 Milpitas Elementary Olympics (MEO), which had all 10 elementary schools compete in 8 events at the May 20 event. Curtner also defended its Team Relay Championship.

MUSD team shares report on Code of Conduct Restorative Practices
Director Maurissa Koide, Mental Health Program Manager Sandra Quintana, Principal Laurie Armino, Assistant Principals Recep Iscan and Emily Delora-Ellefson, Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) Derek Castaneda and Calaveras Hills HS student Arianna Roach shared the Code of Conduct and Restorative Practices presentation with the Board and community.

The Code of Conduct emerged as it was one of the measurable outcomes and activities outlined in the MUSD Comprehensive Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CCEIS) 2020 Plan. As part of the CCEIS 2021 Plan, Learning and Development began to train Assistant Principals and other staff members on restorative practices which shapes our Code of Conducts’ approach.

Restorative practices aim to provide strong instructional approaches to building community and improving all students’ sense of belonging. This approach seeks to have a direct impact on student engagement (attendance, behavior, and academic performance).
MUSD names new Director of Special Ed
With the Board of Education's support. MUSD Superintendent Cheryl Jordan announced the hiring of Jeff Weiss as the new Director of Special Education and Student Services at the May 23 meeting.

Weiss, who has more than 20 years of experience as a teacher in high school and special needs schools, joins our MUSD team via Brentwood Union School District

"I am looking forward to supporting all of our students and staff in an open and accessible way," Weiss said.

  • Approve TBK Construction Management Corp’s Agreement for Construction Management Services for MHS Performing Arts Center and MUSD Innovation Campus
  • Approve Blach’s Amendment 1 for MUSD Innovation Campus Phase II Guaranteed Maximum Price
