Pray for the Synod 5/31

PRAYER FOR THE SYNOD On May 31, you are invited to join in a moment of prayer for the Synodal process which is currently underway. On the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we place the work of the Synod under the protection of Mary, Mother of the Church. Please pray for the Synod from wherever you are!

Lord our God,

you have called all of us to listen humbly

to your Holy Spirit and to one another, especially those on the margins.

Give each of us the compassionate, humble, and welcoming heart

of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who “set out in haste”

to help her cousin Elizabeth.

Guide and bless the Synodal Process,

that your Church may journey together ever more effectively.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ordinations to the Priesthood 6/3

CARE FOR CREATION TIP OF THE WEEK Laudato Si’ Week, which is May 21 to 28, celebrates the eighth anniversary of the publication of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’. This year’s theme is “Hope for the Earth. Hope for Humanity”. To honor this week, consider watching the film “The Letter”, which tells the story of four “social poets” affected first-hand by the climate crisis who travel to Rome to meet Pope Francis. You can stream the movie for free at https://www.theletterfilm.org/.

HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS On June 2 from 6:30pm-7:30pm, you are invited to join Archbishop Etienne for a Holy Hour as we pray the two young men who will be ordained in the Cathedral on June 3, and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. The Holy Hour will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the beautiful music of our Taizé ensemble. Because of the Holy Hour, there will be no regular ecumenical prayer in June. The regular Taizé Evening Prayer will resume on Friday, July 7.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A middle aged man made ends meet with his job until he experienced a dental emergency. Needing expensive dental work as soon as he could afford it, the man tried to put away a significant portion of his paycheck for this purpose. His dental fund strained his budget and he fell behind in paying his rent. The man called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline (206-767-6449). With your assistance, we offered help to pay his current rent. Additionally, we referred him to potential resources for finding discounted dental service. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or [email protected].

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC Are you, a family member, or a friend interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Are you curious about how a person becomes Catholic? Information, John Marquez, [email protected].

VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open. It is a beautiful place to visit and pray for all our beloved dead. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

ENDING THE DEATH PENALTY is quite literally life-and-death. Even though Washington State no longer has the death penalty, many other states still practice it. Join the Catholic Mobilizing Network (catholicsmobilizing.org) to advocate for the end to the death penalty in every state, and pray for those who are on death row.

CHOIR CAMP 2023 All children and youth with unchanged (treble) voices entering grades 1 through 8 are encouraged to register for Choir Camp! All are welcome: parishioners and non-parishioners alike. Camp occurs daily August 7-11, Monday through Friday, 9am until 4pm. Camp concludes with all choristers returning at 9am on August 13 to sing for the 10am Sunday Mass. Information, Youth Music Office, 206-382-4876 or [email protected].

WELCOME BACKPACKS More than 200 items were purchased from Immigrant Assistance’s wish list, which along with cash donations allowed us to prepare 25 initial Welcome Backpacks. Thank you! The St. James Respite Team is giving the backpacks to migrants who recently arrived in Seattle after crossing the southern border, and walking alongside them as they access resources and navigate a new community. With support from the Respite Team, one backpack recipient was approved for a period of free healthcare, familiarized with public transit, connected to a volunteer role at a food bank and shared in dialogues about cultural orientation. The Respite Team expects to welcome nine additional migrants in May. Thank you for extending a warm welcome to these newcomers. Information, Erica de Klerk, [email protected] or 206-382-4511.

TOILETRY DONATIONS If you are traveling and staying at a hotel, consider bringing the small toiletries back to St. James. There is a donation bin located in the Cathedral Bookstore. Our St. Vincent de Paul conference packages the toiletries and distributes them to those in need. Thank you!

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE: Sandwich Making Ministry Healthy sandwiches can be made at home and then brought to the Cathedral to share with men staying at the St. Martin de Porres Shelter. This is a great activity for families with young children, people with busy lives, and anyone who is not able to go out and serve. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515 or [email protected].
